Synopsis

Produced for the Sci-Fi Channel, this twisted variation on L. Frank Baum's classic tale follows a young girl named D.G. and her newfound friends as they embark on a wondrous adventure through the Outer Zone (O.Z.) on a mission to locate a powerful wizard known as the Mystic Man, and break the spell of the wicked sorceress Azkadellia. An ordinary girl suddenly thrust into an extraordinary world, D.G. (Zooey Deschanel) arrives on the Outer Zone prepared to follow the fabled Old Road and fulfill her destiny. When D.G. discovers that the evil Azkadellia (Kathleen Robertson) has cast an oppressive spell over the Outer Zone, she enlists the aid of half-brained eccentric Glitch (Alan Cumming), kindly-but-cowardly beast Raw (Raoul Trujillo), and heartbroken former lawman Cain (Neil McDonough) in seeking out the wisdom of the fabled Mystic Man (Richard Dreyfuss) who lives at the end of the Old Road. With the future of the Outer Zone hanging in the balance, this adventurous group ventures down a perilous road that will find them doing battle with nightmarish flying monkey bats and Azkadellia's malevolent henchmen as they attempt to break a spell with the power to destroy them all. Perhaps before their journey is over, D.G. and her new friends will discover a few things that they never even knew about themselves as well. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

5.0 out of 5 stars Generations later in the Land of Oz..., Jun 5 2008
By Matthew Minckler (Victoria, British Columbia Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The Tin Man mini-series brings the Land of Oz to an interesting period in time. It has been generations since dorothy has left Oz and things have changed dramatically. The Munchkins have devolved into tribes of tree dwelling warriors, the yellow brick road is overgrown and in disrepair and the Queen of Oz rules with an Iron fist. It is a great series which enhances the overall world of Oz. If you like this movie you should definitely read "Wicked" by Gregory Maguire, It is a great story of the entire life of the Wicked Witch of the West. I would love to see this turned into a series. Hopefully we will see much more of Oz in the coming years.

3.0 out of 5 stars Don't purchase this DVD for your deaf/hearing impaired relatives, May 19 2008
By A Clockwork Nebari (Winnipeg, MB) - See all my reviews
Don't get me wrong, I greatly enjoyed this movie/miniseries. I loved how the story was almost completely different from the 1930's movie, and yet the essential framework of the Wizard of Oz was still recognizable in it. It was a lot darker and edgier, and there was a happy lack of singing munchkins (there were munchkins of course, but they weren't, ah, the singing type). The movie itself I rate 4 stars, though being 4.5 hours long it's kind of a lot to take in all in one sitting ^_^.

However, the reason I rated this DVD with 3 stars instead of 4 has to do with the fact that, for some reason, there is no closed captioning or subtitles of any kind. Having a very close relative who is hard-of-hearing, I find this extremely disappointing. She has a very hard time following movies or TV shows that aren't closed captioned, because she can't tell what the characters are saying half the time without them! As most DVD releases these days are closed captioned/subtitled, I found it very surprising that this one wasn't. On the other hand, "The Hogfather", which was distributed by the same company, Genius Entertainment, was not closed captioned/subtitled either. Whether this is the norm for this company I don't know, but I will be very hesitant about purchasing their DVD's again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Will the real OZ please stand up?, Oct 10 2008
By bernie "xyzzy" (Arlington, Texas) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
This well made for TV mini-series Directed by Nick Willing will hold your attention from the beginning. All the actors were well chosen and Zooey Deschanel as DG will enchant you. At first it seems like any other contemporary contrived script that was just using a snappy title. Then you think this is Smallville and where is Clark? Then slowly the story unfolds and before you realize hat has happened you are caught up in the intrigue of a complex story with all of the elements found in Frank Baum's original story but actually better designed. The film, even though being promoted as the darker side of OZ, in reality is just a little more down to earth or up in the sky fari tale.

DG grows up in a rural town by elderly loving parents. There she is a waitress tat is contemplating of going out into the wide world. She has strange dreams of another world. Before her parents can tell her, the other world becomes a reality and DG becomes the target or key to an insidious plot to destroy the O.Z.
