Product Description

Description

A sweeping saga of royalty, scandal, and the man who waited a lifetime to be king

Though he waited nearly 60 years to become king and reigned for only nine, Edward VII changed the British monarchy forever. Derided by his mother, Queen Victoria, as frivolous and untrustworthy, Edward was in fact a skillful, determined diplomat who longed to be useful to his country. This classic 13-part British miniseries dramatizes his life from frustrated prince and inveterate philanderer to loving father and respected statesman. Firmly grounded in history, it intimately depicts the palace dynamics that reverberated in Parliament and beyond during the years preceding World War I.

Broadcast in the U.K. as Edward the Seventh.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating account of a little known King, Nov 9 2009
By L. Thomas (Hamilton, ON Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Amid lush costumes and gorgeous sets and backgrounds, this series offers a fascinating account of Edward VII's life (and sadly) short reign. The character portrayals are spot on, giving the viewer an indepth look at the life and reign of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their family. Before I saw this series, all I knew of King Edward was that he spent most of his time enjoying picnics during shooting parties or looking for women to go to bed with him. But watching this series gave me a new opinion of Edward; suddenly he became a most interesting person who you feel sympathy for while watching him standing helplessly by, as his mother refused to allow him to prepare for his destiny. Whether or not that long delay in fulfilling his royal obligations made him a more thoughtful, caring and beloved monarch, no one will really never know. Yet, I wonder if he'd had more time to influence the governments which existed in Europe at that time, would WW1 been avoided? Oddly enough, while watching this series, I noticed the similarities between Edward (nicknamed "Bertie") and Charles, the current Prince of Wales. While I doubt that Elizabeth II similar to Victoria in her desire to keep her son away from the throne, I think it is uncanny how both sons who must follow their mother's reigns seem to only get the chance at the end of their lives. If you are interested in the Royal Family and their ancestry, I highly recommend this series.
