Review

It's not easy for one of the most beloved film series of its time to return after a 19-year absence, though Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull manages to do a serviceable job of recapturing what audiences have come to equate with their favorite fearless archeologist. Indeed, Harrison Ford is back again, this time a tad wiser and a lot more grey, yet still packing that familiar quick wit, trusty whip, and mean punch to get him out of tough spots. Along for the ride are a slew of new cohorts (including Shia LaBeouf, Ray Winstone, and John Hurt) and a few new delicious baddies (Cate Blanchett, Igor Jijikine) to add to his roster of villains. Of course, it's the inclusion of Karen Allen as Marion that truly makes this outing special. But what of the excitement, the humor, and the old Spielberg fun that people of all ages have come to love from this fabled franchise? Inklings of them are there, even if the sands of time have eroded the filmmaker's potency for delivering the magic of yesteryear. Just as Ford had much to prove, so did the movie's helmer. Spielberg's recent efforts had given rise to the idea that a sweet slice of cinema pie was once again in his recipe book. Resoundingly, he shows that his classic camera chops have gone nowhere, although his work with actors leaves a bit to be desired. In fact, Kingdom's stumbling blocks aren't in its presentation but in its execution. Much of the blame has been thrown screenwriter David Koepp's way, somewhat deservedly. Yet the fact is that the production is plagued by an underlying awkwardness that goes beyond Koepp's wordy approach and half-cooked character work. Performance-wise, viewers are delivered a hodgepodge of misses and knockouts, lending credence to the growing mistrust surrounding co-creator George Lucas' touch - especially given his fondness for stiff acting. The modern age can also be seen rearing its head, thanks to the overall lack of stunts and overuse of computer effects, which create a great lack of tension in much of the overly spectacular proceedings. That said, there's still some stuff to love in this fourth outing. For instance, the action scenes are still superbly staged, with an early motorcycle chase standing out as a highlight. Also, as if it wasn't good enough to be able to see Indy doing his thing again, there are moments of brilliance between Marion and him, even if they leave one yearning for more. The same goes for the musical maestro behind the series, John Williams, who laces in the Raiders theme with ample glee, transporting his audience to a familiar and welcome place throughout the movie. Yet there is a desire to hear something beyond the subtle B-movie/sci-fi throwback score he delivers. If anything, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull might have the power to shine if viewed merely as escapism entertainment. However, it seems evident that the mileage has not only taken a toll on the character, but the series as well. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide

3.0 out of 5 stars Another Classic Hero Returns, Sep 10 2008
By Jenny J.J.I. "A New Yorker" (That Lives in Northern Nevada) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
They might have gotten a little lazy with this sequel but this film was alright. The opening scene is incredible, as we return to the warehouse last seen at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Here we see Indiana Jones for the first time since Last Crusade: Older, Wiser, and more mature. But the man can still use his whip. The thing with Crystal Skull that I really loved was that this is a different Indy. If you go in to this movie expecting to see some crazy stunts like in the previous films then you won't be satisfied. Indiana has settled down. He is in his 60's. We know what he is capable of. We know how tough he is. They didn't have to show him be the tough as nails archaeologist that we came to love because we are so familiar with him. What Spielberg did this time around was have an Indy that is more in the role of Henry Jones Sr from Last Crusade.

In a way, we have watched Indiana grow up over the course of the four films. We've seen him as the young hero and now we see him as the older hero. Spielberg said that he was making this movie for the fans. He didn't come out to make this better than Raiders. He came out to bring us Indy one last time. To show that just like all of us, Indy has grown up with the times, but he still has it in him for one last adventure.

Shia Labeouf was great as Mutt. I honestly wouldn't mind seeing a spin off with just him (maybe). Marion is always great and the chemistry between her and Indy is perfect. Cate Blanchett did a great job as Irina Spalko, she was beautiful, and a great choice for the part. But the true star of the movie is again Shia LeBouf. He so far does well in every movie he is in, but in this movie he does even better. He is funny, entertaining, and is believable as the slightly soft kid pretending to be tough. The whole alien plot was a bit much, but had a great moral at the end, the true treasure was knowledge. Though this is base on 1950's everyone was talking about aliens, and little green men, and the race to space around this era. It was nice to see Indy go after something different this time around.

For all the complaining about the CG and the impossible sequences, again, this was Spielberg and the crew having fun probably without much effort. They weren't trying to win an Oscar. They just wanted to bring back Indiana Jones. Throughout the whole film, Harrison Ford seemed like he was having a blast and so was I. All in all, even though it didn't feel like the original three, it was a "O-kay" addition. As long as you come in just wanting to have a fun time at the movies, then you will love this movie. Beside that the action sequences is decent and the story is very original. This will probably take you one watch for you to like it or not. Cheers Jones.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, although I sure hope it's the last chapter!, Nov 2 2008
By Matthew King - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This fourth entry in the franchise is not one of the better Indy films (only temple of doom is weaker than this one) but a not so great indy film is still more entertaining than just about anything. A shocking plotline involving aliens makes this worth watching and makes it very revelatory. The problem is that it's a little too tongue-in-cheek (even more so than the other entries), constantly poking fun at the fact Indy is no longer a spring chicken. We get it guys, let's move on. Despite its flaws, this is still a thrilling actioner that will keep you on your seat.

3.0 out of 5 stars nothing really wrong with this movie, Dec 10 2008

if i recall correctly, this fourth movie in the series was slagged by
critics and audiences alike, wrongly in my opinion.oddly
enough, though,it has a pretty decent rating here of 6.8.i found it to
be a fun little romp,with an interesting story to it.i'll admit,i don't
think it has the depth of any of the previous installments, and there is
a bit of suspect dialogue.overall though,it's a fun ride.it's fairly
exciting,with lots of action,and there's some funny moments.i think
it's much lighter in tone than any of the other movies in the
series, but that doesn't make it a bad movie.i was very impressed with
Cate Blanchet as the villainess.i found her very credible.again,i'm
not sure why people hated this movie.i liked it.for me,Indiana Jones
and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is a 3.5/5
