Review

The curtain rises on Marvel Comics' first in-house production to rousing results as their metal man of iron introduces himself to enthralled moviegoers everywhere. Just as billionaire playboy Tony Stark utilizes his technological know-how to fight evildoers, so does director Jon Favreau use his bag of cinematic tricks to lay the groundwork for yet another top-caliber franchise starring one of the biggest icons of the printed page. Delivering laughs as well as leaps of wonder, this comic-book fantasy gets it right across the board, with its buoyant tone never diluting the grounded dramatics of the story. For the flick to work, though, one needs an exceptional cast -- something this production has in spades. Sure, it's an origin story, but to the cast's credit, none of it ever seems tedious. Even if they basically follow the same superhero mold of yesteryear, the tight ensemble of Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard, and Jeff Bridges sells the action romp every step of the way -- so much so that one can't help but want more. It's quite evident that the best is yet to come, not only with this series, but also with big-screen Marvel outings as a whole. With clever shout-outs to the imprint's expansive universe (including a post-credit cameo that'll send the geek Richter scale off the charts), Iron Man sets the stage for as yet unrealized crossover possibilities, a dream barely hinted at in previous book-to-screen adaptations. If future productions can deliver on the story while juggling both the technology and the talent as well as this one did, then it is possible that this is the true start of comicdom's cinematic rebirth, built by the best that Hollywood has to offer. All in all, a fine introduction to a hero that finally dares to tackle weight-of-the-world issues. It's about time. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide

5.0 out of 5 stars I am Iron Man, Aug 19 2008

Robert Downey Jnr is without a doubt one of the finest actors of this or any other generation. Problem is due to some personal problems in the past he wasn't getting the big roles anymore. The studio was reluctant to place him in the starring role of this movie... and then they saw his audition... HE IS IRON MAN!

Without a doubt no other actor could have played Tony Stark better than Robert Downey Jnr and along with a very talented supporting cast (including Gweneth Paltrow, Terrance Howard and Jeff Bridges) plus a very talented director (Jon Favreau) this is Iron Man brought the life the right way!

An action packed thrill stacked ride that any fan is guarenteed to enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars I am Iron Man, Nov 24 2008

I think 2008 was the year of the good comic-book movie, and I have to admit that Iron Man was and is a great treat. Originally, I thought that this would be nothing more than Batman light, with similar characters the whole rich, playboy industrialist, Tony Stark, with an alter-ego. And although Iron Man does suffer a little from the similar theme, Robert Downey Jr. (RDJ), makes it a great role for himself with Tony Stark, and the movie works even though the script and story are extremely obvious as far as direction goes.

Tony Stark is the usual spoiled genious rich kid grown up and made weak by the many excesses sexual and substance. But Tony Stark is forced to see the truth of what his family's company has been doing for the past few years, and in an attempt to save his own life from injury that ironically and obviously comes at the hands of his own weapon, so out of self-preservation Tony uses his engineering know-how to construct a life-sustaining and enhancing appartatus and eventually a suit to become Iron Man.

The movie itself is well acted and progressed well, for a movie based on a comic-book. It is a must see to any fan of RDJ and Iron Man, or even fans of the comic-book film genre. I would be very interested in seeing the sequel and how it works with the Incredible Hulk franchise.
