Product Description

Album Description

2009 release from the veteran British Electronic rockers. Eclectic and energized, the band's new release is their most dazzling and diverse album in decades. Recorded in Santa Barbara and New York, Depeche Mode returned to using a lot of vintage gear, from analogue synthesizers to drum machines, in order to conjure up the retro-futuristic arrangements featured on the album. Lyrically the release contains many of the group's enduring obsessions plus more overt black humor than any of their previous collections. The release marks a reunion between the band and producer Ben Hillier, who worked with the band on Playing The Angel. Features the single 'Wrong'. Mute.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast becoming one of my favourite DM albums, May 5 2009

The more I listen to this, the more I like it - the usual sign of a good album. Great sounds with a new feel from some past toys, similar to what Robin L'Ecuyer has said. The words are worth some attention as well.

The Wrong video is 'exciting', although perhaps a bit 'disturbing' to some. Along with the short film, it's worth a $1 or $2 for the deluxe version for DM fans. Have only listened to the extended mixes once.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sounds of a certain universe, April 27 2009
By P. Csillag "fellow music snob" (Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
With 'Sounds of the Universe' Depeche Mode have successfully created an album to follow up 2005's 'Playing the Angel' and that's no small accomplishment (although not surprising as there are very faults in the band's three decade catalogue and not at all surprising when you hear the album.) The sound is familiar and there are some fine numbers here that certainly showcase the band doing what they do best - the lead single 'Wrong' is powerful in its simplicity, while the opening 'In Chains' and the later 'Miles Away/The Truth Is' certainly sound like they'll be held in high regard by fans for some time. But how well the album stands out for a band of such high musical caliber is a bit of a mystery - as good as this album is, one can't help but feel that this is an already familiar territory in their sound. Similarly familiar, like the preceding album and some others, is the "power stacking" of much of the album's strongest numbers towards the first half, thus leaving the listening experience a but lop-sided rather than well rounded. One has to question the necessity of the instrumental short 'Spacewalker' and whether or not it should be replaced by one of the stronger leftover B-sides from the album sessions which - knowing this band - could well be A-side material. But regardless, an album should be judged by its own merits and 'Sounds of the Universe' is certainly an ace in that regard.
