Product Description

At a time when too many animated films consist of anthropomorphized animals cracking sitcom one-liners and flatulence jokes, the warmth, originality, humor, and unflagging imagination of Up feel as welcome as rain in a desert. Carl Fredericksen (voice by Ed Asner) ranks among the most unlikely heroes in recent animation history. A 78- year-old curmudgeon, he enjoyed his modest life as a balloon seller because he shared it with his adventurous wife Ellie (Ellie Docter). But she died, leaving him with memories and the awareness that they never made their dream journey to Paradise Falls in South America. When well-meaning officials consign Carl to Shady Oaks Retirement Home, he rigs thousands of helium balloons to his house and floats to South America. The journey's scarcely begun when he discovers a stowaway: Russell (Jordan Nagai), a chubby, maladroit Wilderness Explorer Scout who's out to earn his Elderly Assistance Badge. In the tropical jungle, Carl and Russell find more than they bargained for: Charles Muntz (Christopher Plummer), a crazed explorer whose newsreels once inspired Carl and Ellie; Kevin, an exotic bird with a weakness for chocolate; and Dug (Bob Peterson), an endearingly dim golden retriever fitted with a voice box. More importantly, the travelers discover they need each other: Russell needs a (grand)father figure; Carl needs someone to enliven his life without Ellie. Together, they learn that sharing ice-cream cones and counting the passing cars can be more meaningful than feats of daring-do and distant horizons. Pete Docter (Monsters, Inc. ) and Bob Peterson direct the film with consummate skill and taste, allowing the poignant moments to unfold without dialogue to Michael Giacchnio's vibrant score. Building on their work in The Incredibles and Ratatouille, the Pixar crew offers nuanced animation of the stylized characters. Even by Pixar's elevated standards, Up is an exceptional film that will appeal of audiences of all ages. Rated PG for some peril and action. --Charles Solomon

Review

There might not be a more dependable name in all of Hollywood than Pixar, and their tenth animated feature, Up, continues the studio's remarkable hot streak. As is usually the case, the premise is elegantly simple: in order to fulfill a promise to his dearly departed adventure-loving wife, senior citizen Carl Fredricksen (Ed Asner) flies to South America by hitching thousands of helium balloons to the house they built together. As silly as that may sound, director Pete Docter captures the audience's heart right from the beginning, thanks to an opening ten minutes that encapsulate the happy, decades-long marriage Carl shared with his dear Ellie. Following the duo from their first meeting as children who idolized the same superstar adventurer, to their tragic inability to have children, to their final moments together, this sweet, nearly dialogue-free sequence stands as arguably the most poignant in Pixar history -- right alongside WALL-E's spacewalk, and Jessie's abandonment in Toy Story 2. It's a remarkably emotional way to start things off, but it sets the audience up for all the amazing things that follow precisely because you never question why Carl acts on his obsession. But, of course, he doesn't go on this journey by himself. Wilderness Scout Russell (Jordan Nagai) -- think "green" Boy Scout -- happens to be on Carl's porch right when the house takes off. Russell enthusiastically offers his assistance because if he can help an old person, he'll be able to earn the final badge he needs to become a Senior Wilderness Scout -- and gain his dad's elusive attention. They're eventually joined by Dug (Bob Peterson), a dog that talks with the help of a special collar invented by his owner, who turns out to have a special role in Carl's past. Divulging any more of the plot would be just plain mean, because above all else, Up is an old-fashioned adventure story -- a throwback to the kind of breathless storytelling that made serials popular in the early days of movies. So much of the fun in watching Up comes from never quite being sure what thrill is right around the corner. You get the feeling that, had Pixar been in business 25 years ago, Steven Spielberg might have made this movie for them as a follow-up to Raiders of the Lost Ark. But it's not just the anything-could-happen excitement that gives the film a Spielberg vibe, it's also the genuine emotion at the heart of all that adventure. There is real grief, longing, and heartbreak in both Carl and Russell, and that makes us care about what happens to them. In fact, the way that Up grounds its fantastical events in such emotion could also have made it a worthy successor to E.T. And just as it would be a mistake to dismiss Raiders as just another textbook adventure film or E.T. as just an average lovable-alien-eats-Reese's Pieces flick, it would be equally foolish to think of Up as little more than another CG family film. Pixar doesn't really make family films in the way we've come to use that term -- a dismissive shorthand for something blandly inoffensive. No, Pixar lets smart, quirky artists indulge their creativity, and the results are often the kind of universally appreciated movies that helped make Hollywood a dream factory in the first place. Up fits proudly into that tradition. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

5.0 out of 5 stars Pixar did it again!, Nov 10 2009

The Movie Itself:
When I first watched this movie in theaters, I was thrilled. It was a movie meant for everyone. The novelistic first quarter, with Carl Fredericksen & the love of his life, Ellie, their fantasized story made us adults cry. The next two quarters were intriguing and kept pace with adults and kids like, made us laugh in way only Pixar can, and set us up for an ending that was perhaps most suited for kids but was satisfying for all generations. Pixar has a track record that is unparalleled by any other studio. With "Up" they have proven to us once again that there is more left in their tank to surprise us with.

The Video:
Pixar Home Videos are reference quality discs and this one is also perfect. The MPEG4 AVC 1080p transfer in 1.78:1 aspect ratio is breathtaking. Colours are spectacular, flesh tones are natural, blacks and whites are vibrant, the motion and detail is extraordinary and leaps out of the screen. Okay I have run out of words so I hope you all get the idea.

The Audio:
As impressive as the video is the DTS HDMA 5.1 track. You can actually feel the atmosphere through the speakers. The control of the channels is perhaps the best I can recall in recent memory. Heck I could even feel the wind blowing through the house when its lifted up in the air. The balloons rubbing against each other and the briefest of sounds were clear. It really is a treat and its one of those few times when my surround sound investment seems to be worthwhile.

Final Words:
Up has it all, its perhaps the best release of the year if considered as package. Its presentation is second to none and its a movie that can be enjoyed by kids of all ages including some of us who think they are too old for everything. I hope everyone picks it up and enjoys it for years to come. Highly Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another overpriced Blu-ray in Canada!
See my review for Monsters Inc. on Blu-ray too. When you buy Up on Blu-ray from Amazon US, you get $10 off a second Blu-ray, so the Up and Monsters Inc. combo price is US$32. Read more

I saw this movie at the theatres and enjoyed it greatly.
Looking forward to buying it.
However, why is it $25 in Canada and $10 pre-buy in the US.
