A longtime favorite among fans of small-screen terror, the first season of the syndicated anthology series Tales from the Darkside (1983-1988) finally arrives on DVD to bring a new generation of viewers into its murky domain. The brainchild of producing partners George Romero (Night of the Living Dead) and Richard Rubinstein (Dawn of the Dead '78 and '04), Darkside's stories hewed closer to such straight-ahead fright fare as Night Gallery than the speculative fiction of The Twilight Zone or Amazing Stories (Darkside's chief competitor for viewers in its early season). Episodes revolved around deals with the Devil ("I'll Give You a Million," "Pain Killer"), paranormal phenomena and black magic ("Levitation," "Snip, Snip"), the unquiet dead (Robert Bloch's "A Case of the Stubborns," starring a young Christian Slater) and monsters both human ("The Anniversary") and otherwise ("In the Closet," directed by effects legend Tom Savini). Budgetary restraints blunted some of the show's special effects, and while those haven't improved with time, the best of the first-season episodes--"Closet," "Stubborns," and the Romero-penned pilot "Trick or Treat"--still retain the power to raise hairs in their brief running time. Other technical aspects remain solid, with scripts written by or based on stories by Stephen King, Harlan Ellison and Michael McDowell and stars like Danny Aiello, Victor Garber and Justine Bateman. The entire first season is compiled edit-free on the three-disc set; Romero's commentary on "Trick or Treat" covers the show's conception and his influences. --Paul Gaita

5.0 out of 5 stars George A. Romero TV, Aug 1 2009

This was the first time I have ever seen Tales from the Darkside and I must say that I was rather impressed considering it was made for TV and the stories were only an average of twenty-three minutes.
Some of the stories lacked acting or story line but the majority of the episodes were entertaining. I myself am a huge George A. Romero, Tom Savini, and Stephen King fan and this had all of them involved.
The downside of Tales is that its format is cheesy and you can tell that it was made in the early eighties. However, if you're a fan, you will enjoy it.
My favorite episodes was episode one which was a Halloween story about an old man who had the whole town indebted to him and every Halloween he allowed the children to enter his house to see if they could find the stack of I owe u's to take there parents out of debt. This story was written by George A. Romero and the make-up effects were by Tom Savini.
Episode 8, directed by Tom Savini was my favorite it's about a girl who rents out a room from a school professor and finds something in a small closet in her room. I don't want to say anymore as it may spoil the story for you.
Episode 9 The processor of the gods, written by Stephen King was well acted by Bruce Davison about a man who recieves a processor that granted whatever was typed in.
All the other episodes are good as well and i would recommend this dvd collection to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great to see this on DVD!!, Oct 26 2009

Wow! So many memories of TFTD when it was airing on TV, my brother and I would make it a ritual to watch it every week and myself being a scared little kid would never be able to sleep for a couple of days....sometimes, it wasnt even the stories, just the actual music & intro and closing credits would make my spine chill.

Now fast forward about 20 years later and i come across this DVD at a local video store...at first, i totally didnt remember it but then looking at the backside of the dvd and seeing the name George A Romero, everything came back like it was yesterday!!

Watching it now, of course..not as scary as when i was a kid and the bad hair and fashion of the 80's is pretty funny at times but it still looks good after all these years and you'll apperciate the storylines, the acting & at times, the scares.

Even though it had Darkside in the title..not all stories were scary or disturbing...some were actually funny intentionally and some were actually sad and depressing but no matter what they were, all of them were clever in their own way.

Alot of famous people got their careers started in some of the TFTD short stories, check it out and you'll see a few you know..

All in all, a great 80's tv series flashback to get on DVD!!
