4.0 out of 5 stars WELCOME TO "IGORMANIA", April 12 2009
By THE CRITIC "MOVIE MANIAC" (Windsor, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
He's Back! "Igor" the unpredictable green skinned sidekick played by Fishka Rais takes centre stage in Castle Frightenstein in the newest DVD release from Anchor Bay Canada/Critical Mass. Igor and his master The Count are back for more fun in the "Igormania" DVD edition with six chapters compiled from the 1970's children's classic the "Hilarious House of Frightenstein".

"Igormania" is the very first single disc release from Anchor Bay Entertainment Canada/Critical Mass in a proposed series of character compilations from the show. Fortunately fans won't have to wait very long for the next DVD compilation entitled Grizelda's Eat Drink and Be Scary; it's scheduled for release on May 19 2009.

This is the fourth DVD release from the "Hilarious House of Frightenstein" created in 1971 by the much underrated comedic genius Billy Van. This iconic children's show amassed a huge cult following during it s 25 year run and ever since it left the airwaves in 1997 episodes have been extremely hard to find. Thanks to Critical Mass and Anchor Bay Canada we are once again being treated to another installment from the "Hilarious House of Frightenstein" on DVD.

The six chapters compiled in this DVD run 65 minutes in total. The disc has a play all/scene selection feature but there is no mention of episode titles in the menu or disc packaging. The six chapters are presented in their full screen color format and contain mono sound. The quality of the picture and sound is really good and better than anything I expected. The video transfer is pretty clear with some blemishes here and there and the sound while pretty consistent could have been much louder. The single sided disc comes in a standard DVD case with nice artwork and detail.

The Hilarious House of Frightenstein with its opening and closing segments and narration from the legendary Vincent Price was worth the price of this DVD for me. Thank You Anchor Bay/Critical Mass for releasing this awesome compilation DVD, now I get to relive a little of my childhood all over again. I hope that more material will be released in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, April 15 2009
By Timothy E. Lasiuta (Red Deer, Alberta) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Those who grew up watching the Hilarious House of Frightenstein will cheer! The unfortunate among us, whose first exposure to Franky, the Count, Dr Pet Vet, Bwana Clyde Batty, Grizelda, the Librarian, and Vincent Price as co-host and introductionist is the new releases from Anchor Bay, welcome.

Igor carried viewers from the laboratory scenes with the Count and continuously malfunctioning Franky, the opening scene after Vincent Price read a short poem, to Dr Pet Vet, and even appeared in the funkadelic dance videos that surely inspired MTV (which probably originally meant Monster TV). Yes, he was loveable, yet his green appearance (even on b/w sets in 1971) struck us young'uns as scary. Looking back more than one decade, he wasn't and even the Count (who thought he was scary) was anything but.

Portayed by Fishka Rais, Igor was a star to young viewers. I really liked the count, but Igor had a certain style, which is easy to see once you laugh your way through the DVD compilation. The count without Igor, not as funny, but with there was no beating them. It would have been like Sonny without Cher, or Bugs Bunny without Elmer Fudd, or Batman without Robin. I think you get the idea.

There are some fantastic bits on this video, which have to be seen to be appreciated. Can't wait for the next one with Grizelda.

Tim Lasiuta
