So now we come to the final season of Friday the 13th: the series. First of all, if you haven't already watched the first couple seasons... um... what are you doing here? Go buy them now! :) For the rest of you... if the third season isn't exactly my favourite season, it was at least, I found, the most refined visually and the stories were plotted a little bit better. The special effects are more subdued and used sparingly and more naturistically especially when compared to the first season. The dialogue seems a lot more natural between the main characters as you've got to know them for at least two years now. I suppose what keeps it from being my favourite season is Steven Monarque. As the replacement for John D. LeMay's Ryan Dallion, Monarque's Johnny Ventura really has no reason why he should be searching for cursed objects except for kicks. Ventura also seems wooden in his delivery though it's perhaps the writers who didn't really know what to do with his character. It's too bad because during his stint in the couple episodes in Season 2, he really wasn't that bad. With that said, the character does grow on you with his naivete and the mistakes he makes (some of them forehead-smackingly so). Eventually in later episodes, he even develops better instincts for danger, which the established characters (read Jack and Micki) sometimes ignore to their detriment. Anyway, I'm digressing a little.

The cursed objects are a lot more cooler now and in one episode even provide a lot of opportunity for dog-related humour (see the "My Wife as a Dog" episode). Very notable cursed objects include:
-A hearing aid that allows one to hear another's inner thoughts
-A wheelchair that allows a rape victim to exact revenge on those who hurt her
-A magical cross that exhumes a holy flame to incinerate vampires as long as you sacrifice someone first
-A fountain pen that injects evil impulses into people
-A cameo necklace that torments a man into killing (my personal favourite episode)
-A nautical themed jack-in-the-box that drowns people
-A dog leash that grants wishes (yes... I'm not kidding... you must see this episode if only for the funny "dog" references)

This season also seems to have the most sympathetic villains -- in a lot of the stories, the antagonists aren't necessarily outwardly bad guys -- they're just people who've made mistakes and perhaps carry things too far. I think that's what makes this season somewhat provocative -- it can potentially make us question our own humanity and how we would react to adversity. Of course, you can also view my statement as being pretentious, in which case, you can revel in the all the thrilling fun that FT13:TS has to offer. After all, it also has the blood, gore and creepy escapism to satisfy horror/thriller fanatics.
