Synopsis

During a boring, routine weekend, young Glen (Stephen Dorff) and his best buddy Terry (Louis Tripp) decide to explore Glen's backyard. Before long, the boys come across a strange hole in the ground which yields all manner of sinister prizes. Consulting one of his heavy-metal record albums, Glen comes to the correct conclusion that the hole is actually the Gate to Hell. Offering a sacrifice in the form of a dead dog, Glen further opens the portals of Hades, through which pass some of the most hideous demons imaginable. A surprise box-office hit, The Gate yielded a sequel, predictably titled Gate II. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

1.0 out of 5 stars i didn't like it at all, July 25 2007

i didn't like this movie at all and i certainly didn't think it was scary. in fact,it seemed to me the actors were trying hard not to laugh, when they were supposed to be scared.i also didn't think the special effects were very realistic.in fact,i found them funny at times.i realize the technology wasn't what it is today, but still.i think the filmmakers stretched themselves.i think they should have waited until they had better technology,or done things differently.it's possible they mad the movie to be deliberately funny, but i kind of doubt it.for me,this is close to one of the worst movies i have seen.not everyone will agree, and that's fine.this is just my opinion.my vote for "The Gate":1/5

I have yet to see this movie as an adult, but i remember being aroung the age of 8 and being allowed to watch this by an uncle of mind babysitting one night, and i about wet myself. Nightmares were a regular occurance after that night. I'm sure as an adult that ill wonder what i was thinking back then, but if you are looking for a movie with effects before its time, this is the one. Great film.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Gate Worth Opening, April 20 2004

The Gate is a fantastically frightening supernatural thriller that will have the kids hiding behind the sofa more than once. A worthless first half is thankfully redeemed by some very impressive special effects in the second half and a terrific sense of atmosphere endures throughout. An old film (circa 1986) but The Gate still holds up well and is worth a look. Of passing interest as Stephen Dorff's first film and one of the better creature features of the 1980's.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good movie, adequate DVD, and cheap price! Awesome!
I might be the opposite of most people who were disappointed by the movie after not having seen it in years. "I loved it as a kid," they say. Lisez davantage

3.0 out of 5 stars This DVD is at Best Buy - Sep.15 2003 (...)
No wide-screen and no frills, but it's there.

As for the movie, an 80's-rainy-day B-flavor child/fantasy/adventure/horror flick with some good special effects and a decent story... Lisez davantage
