3.0 out of 5 stars Solid Lenny Kravitz, Jun 9 2004
This review is from: Baptism (Audio CD)
I enjoyed this CD. I thought that the musicianship was solid and so was the writing.

My favorites on this CD are: Where are we runnin' and Minister of Rock 'n Roll.

Um... did anyone think that Lenny's voice sounded sort of Ozzy Osbourne-ish on Minister of Rock 'n Roll?

4.0 out of 5 stars A good collection, Jun 7 2004
This review is from: DRAKAS! (Mass Market Paperback)
I enjoyed some of the stories better than others in this collection, but I suppose that is to be expected. Having said that, I enjoyed the book even if it was just to get another taste of the Drakas.

It is my fervent hope that Stirling continues to write about these intruiging people.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Rate!, Jun 7 2004

Michael McDonald has done good service to those artists whose songs he covered in this collection. I think the comparisons to Michael Bolton that I have seen in other reviews is unfair.

McDonald has a strong soulful quality to his voice, and delivers song after song with clarity and sincerity.

If you liked the original standards that he covers here, I think you will truly enjoy the breath of fresh air that McDonald injects into them.

You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't find fault, April 9 2004
This review is from: Leahy (Audio CD)
I have had this CD for about two years now, and I must say that I truly enjoy it. The musicianship is very sound the music itself is quite engaging.

All of the songs of this CD are of great quality, but my favorite is "The Call To Dance". You aren't likely to sit still while listening to it... even if you aren't a step dance (and I'm not, by any means).

Highly recommended.

Omega
Omega
by Jack Mcdevitt
Edition: Hardcover
30 used & new from CDN$ 0.81

4.0 out of 5 stars Not McDevitt's best..., April 6 2004
This review is from: Omega (Hardcover)
...but still a very good read.

Maybe I'm just not very bright, as some other reviews might suggest, but I enjoyed McDevitt's story mainly because the "Goompah" characters were as human as they were (no, I don't enjoy Barney).

McDevitt left most of the "wonder" of discovery out of this story, deciding instead to tell the tale of a race about to face the Omegas rather than repeat the story of finding planets and remnants of civilisations that have already fought and lost their battle with the clouds.

I thought it was well done, and will continue to enjoy McDevitt's future work.

The Hornet's Nest: A Novel of the Revolutionary War
The Hornet's Nest: A Novel of the Revolutionary War
by Jimmy Carter
Edition: Hardcover
46 used & new from CDN$ 0.01

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great., Feb 11 2004
President Carter deserves credit for doing a novel about the southern theater of war during the American Revolution. It is time and past time that we delve into that region during this period, which is generally ignored or glossed over in our schools.

The characters in this book aren't developed terribly well, and the writing seems labored at points, but since this is Carter's first novel he can be forgiven for that.

I enjoyed it, and although I only gave it three stars I would recommend this novel... especially to anyone who has an interest in that particular part of our national history.

The End of Blackness
The End of Blackness
by Debra J. Dickerson
Edition: Hardcover
20 used & new from CDN$ 0.08

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars for saying..., Feb 11 2004
This review is from: The End of Blackness (Hardcover)
...some of the tough things that we, as black Americans, should have been saying for many many years.

Ms Dickerson deserves full marks for having the courage to skewer many of the sacred cows that we have been praying to for so many years. Further, she doesn't shrink from taking stab at today's almost-useless civil rights leaders.

It is time, and past time for us to be proud of who we are for what we are and what we have done in this country. Not because white people will acknowledge it... some will, some won't. So what?

It is time, and past time for us to stop seeing ourselves only in comparison to how we are treated by white people... or any other people, including other black people.

It is time, and past time for us to stop pretending that we exist outside of American society. This is our country, we are full citizens... let's act like it. We should walk tall, be proud, look others in the eye and smile, or don't... your call, but we ought not wait for the approval of that other person to feel good about ourselves.

Dickerson is right... the mind truly is the last plantation, and all we need do is walk out through the open gate.

Man Comes Around

5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting... Moving... Compelling..., Jan 27 2004
This review is from: Man Comes Around (Audio CD)
...these are some of the words that come to mind when hearing this CD for the first time. These words are magnified with each subsequent listening.

Like many of the reviewers of this CD, I am not a long-time Johnny Cash fan, but I know greatness whn I hear it. To keep this brief, let me just say that the songs on this CD are wonderful. "The Man Comes Around " is a great start, and it only gets better after that. The late Mr Cash added several covers to his own songs, but added gravitas to recordings of "Bridge Over Troubled Waters", "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and others, that the original artists couldn't hope to match.

Cash lends the authority of his long life to this collection of songs, and I don't mind telling you that this is one of the best CD's we have ever purchased.

Highly recommended.

In the Presence of Mine Enemies
In the Presence of Mine Enemies
by Harry Turtledove
Edition: Hardcover
Price: CDN$ 37.50
28 used & new from CDN$ 1.21

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great, Jan 12 2004
I don't know what else to say that hasn't been said, so I'll be brief.

Turtledove is a great storyteller, and I usually feel sympathetic towards his characters, and these characters are no different.

I enjoyed the beginning of the book that set up the story, and I enjoyed the plot device in which the beginnings of the crumbling of the Reich paralelled that of the crumbling of the Soviet Union.

All of the other stuff in between left me fairly cold.

Not Turtledove's best... but lets be honest, even this guy's so-so stuff is better than most of what is out there.
