5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Album, July 14 2004
This review is from: Trampin (Audio CD)
Patti's best since Gone Again in my opinion. Beautiful interwoven music and poetic-like lyrics. Patti's intriguing and spell-binding at her best here and never boring at her worst. I can't find a bad song on this set actually. I won't comment on any political statements. You can judge that for yourself. The band is tight here as well and it's nice to hear actual music with melody and introspective words. If you're an old fan you will love it and if you're new to Patti, this would be a good place to start.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, July 1 2004
This disc isn't as bad as what some would have you believe and not as good as others seem to feel it is either. I doubt that Morrissey will ever put out another work as good as Your Arsenal but I wouldn't expect that either...the lyrics here are clever as usual and there's nothing 'anti-American' in America is not the world...It just speaks the truth...How can an acknowledgement that there have never been any black, female or gay presidents be anything but the truth? The very fact that this song turned some fans off is nothing but an acknowledgement that what is written is the truth.
Unfortunately, in my opinion, the weakness here is the music. There's just nothing that stands out as far as the tunes. In any case, I think it's an o.k. album if you're already a fan but this is not the place to start if you're curious about Morrissey's work.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Distinct Sound of Vomiting, June 30 2004

Arggggg! What a load of manure this disc is! I like The Cure but I can barely handle listening to this disc for more than 2 minutes. Robert Smith's screaming and shouting and there's no melodic songs on here at all. The only thing worse than listening to this disc is looking at the shoddy cover art. Maybe some will find the artwork of children "cute" but I think something more substantial could have been chosen for the bloody cover. Avoid unless you enjoy listening to the sound of fingernails scratching a chalkboard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Heart, June 29 2004
This review is from: Little Queen (Audio CD)
I must say I disagree with Jon Wiederhorn's introductory review of this Heart work. This album is much more accessable than their debut effort and clearly reveals their Zeppelin influences with heavy mandolin/acoustic guitar plays. The other reviewer who liked Dream of the Archer and said he did not like Sylvan Song seems unaware that Sylvan Song is the lead in or introduction of Dream of the Archer. I'm uncertain how you can dislike one and prefer the other. No more is it clear that this is a 70's album when one hears Ann play the flute. As much as I enjoy their new work Jupiters Darling, I miss hearing that wonderful flute sound! To me this is the best album that Heart released and it's too bad there's not more music out there like this today. Pick up the newly remastered version of this today and enjoy a couple of extra tunes as well.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much, too little, June 28 2004
Contrary to what some reviewers have stated, this is not a good place for someone wanting to get into jazz. This is mainly because this set costs too much for that. Also, there's over-whelmingly too much Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday and Dizzie Gillespie tracks here and little else. You would think that with a 5 disc box set, that Ken Burns could have come up with even little known but great jazz artists to include in this collection aside from adding a few more of the wider known ones as well. I am not a "jazz snob" and I feel it's unfair to some of the newer, more contemporary artists to be ignored as well - the rock equivalent of that would be refusing to acknowledge the talent of Jack White simply because he doesn't play like Clapton or Hendrix.

4.0 out of 5 stars Four for the film and a big fat zero for Fox Studios, June 24 2004
This review is from: The Grapes of Wrath (DVD)
Why is this film in the pan and scan (formatted to fit your t.v)format?
This is a CLASSIC film and the LEAST that should have been offered was a both widescreen and full screen versions. Fox is getting almost as cheap as Warner Brothers with its cheap, pathetic, sorry excuse for packaging cardboard containers! GIVE US A BREAK WHY DON'T YOU! Don't shovel out your money for this one until Fox wises up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh Yeah!, June 24 2004
This review is from: Jupiters Darling (Audio CD)
If you are like me and an old fan of Heart since the 70's but have been disappointed with their over-produced 90's era, then look no further! This album is arguably just as good or better than their offerings in the 70's. There are acoustical as well as electric rock offerings here that will not disappoint. The band has never sounded better in this line-up. The only disappointment, and a minor one indeed, is that Ann only sings on this offering but it doesn't matter. Nancy takes front and center here with vocals and various instrumentation. The album is wonderfully crafted and even the CD is packaged beautifully. I would recommend this to any old Heart fan who longs for their earlier edgy sound as well as any new, curious fan. It is no wonder that Heart deserves a high place in the rock world rarely reserved for the female artist and were sometimes called the "female" Led Zeppelin...true or not, this CD is a classic offering!

4.0 out of 5 stars For those who prefer something other than "action" films, June 14 2004
This review is from: Mystic River Deluxe (DVD)
Most of the negative reviews seem to come from people who felt the story-line was too slow. These people must like to watch action hero films with Sylvester Stalone and don't know how to sit and watch a film with an actual plot. Of course the ending wasn't wonderful either. Everyone wants a happy ending to a happy film with everything tied up nicely and neatly in a bow. You don't ever get that in real life so why should a film be different. This is a great film but I wouldn't recommend it to people who don't like drama oriented movies. If you want something action packed or funny, rent Terminator II or Shallow Hal. This film is for people who like great acting and a decent story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting Read, May 30 2004
This review is from: Holographic Universe (Paperback)
One evening years ago while listening to Public Radio, Mr. Talbot was interviewed about his book and I sat and listened transfixed to what he had to say. The story that most stuck in my mind was the story of the hypnotism of a man where the hypnotist stood behind a subject with a watch and asked the gentleman to tell him what he had in his hand and the man told him he had a watch. I immediately went out and bought this book and though it's in the science section, it may very well be in the paranormal section. An interesting and intriguing read! Highly recommended for concepts such as the paranormal and the brain's power to heal the body and mind.
