Into the Web, Jun 30 2004
After 3 sub-par novels, (Peril, Moon over Manhattan, Taken) Thomas Cook is back to doing what he does best. Very complex mysteries with a romantic angle to them. I have been reading mystery novels for over 40 years and when Thomas Cook brings his "A game" there is no one better. As ususal Mr. Cook ties up all the loose ends and finishes with a surpirse ending.`He never cheats on the ending and he makes the trip to Kingdom County worth the ride.

To Wake The Dead, Jun 7 2004
You will need a program to keep up with all the characters in this book. You may also ask yourself while reading this book "what do some of the characters have to do with the story?" But it will all be made clear at the end. This is not my favorite Laymon book, but the ending is very strong.

Dark Universe, April 9 2004
This book is like finding buried treasure. Where has this guy been all my life? All the stories are good to very good. There may not be that "one excellent story", but this is one of the most solid short story collections you will find. The subjects are as diverse as a "dark universe". There is a ghost story, a serial killer story, a contract killer story, some sci-fi etc....Great work!

The Hearse, Feb 27 2004
Very "short" short story. So my review will be very short. Only for die hard Laymon fans. Story is not accurate in regards to the "repo" business. Still a Laymon short story is always a welcome sight for the true horror fan.

A Fine Dark Line, May 16 2003
A great coming of age novel written by a true pro. I rank this one with the other great coming of age novels such as: Boy's Life, Something Wicked This Way Comes, The Traveling Vampire Show and Summer of Night. Horror, suspense and a drive-in movie theatre. What could be better.

CSI: Sin City, Jan 25 2003
A lot like the TV show. But there are some extra bits of insight....like, I did not know that the CSI team that we watch on Thursday nights is actually the 2nd shift. But when you think about it they always seem to be on the crime scene at night. Good TV novel.

Step to the Graveyard Easy, Nov 29 2002
The old pro (pronzini) did it again. I did not like Matt Cape and for the most part I was glad that this was a short book. But the last chapter changed everything. Including how I rated this book. (before the final chapter I was going to rate this book a 3) I have been a fan of Bill Pronzini for over 20 years and this is far from one of his best. Read Blue Lonesome or Wastland for Strangers if you want to see him at the top of his game.

Four Blind Mice, Nov 27 2002
The King of the short chapters has done it again. He just keeps reinventing the mass murderer. This time instead of a serial killer, Dr. Cross has some ex-Vietdam vets that are on the loose. This story gives a lot of insight into the characters of Nana and John Samson. I wish we could have learned more about the "3 Blind Mice" and their "normal" lives away from each other. But that just not James Patterson's style.

Hardcase, Nov 12 2002
An open letter to Mr. Dan Simmons. Dear Mr. Simmons: Please stick to horror novels and leave the PI stories to writers who understand the genre. Your novel Summer of Night is one of my favorites. But Hardcase has more holes than a 20 year old bucket. Why would anybody give an ex-con like Kurtz the time of day, much less quit their old job, give him a millon dollars etc.... And do not forget that in the first of the book Kurtz was looking for a missing accountant. After the accountant's wife is killed you never hear about him anymore.

This book starts real slow. The back cover of the paperback states that a stranger "pounds" on the door of the Young's house. This happens around page 100 of the paperback. Just when I started to put this book down and go on to something else...BAM! It really gets going. Then it slows down again....BAM! Here we go again. You'll love Rosemary Snow. You'll want to strangle Joey for his stupidity. Certainly a mixed bag.
