5.0 out of 5 stars HEAVY METAL DEFINED, Oct. 30 2012
This review is from: Black Sabbath (Audio CD)
With The Cream, The Who, and Led Zeppelin cashing on their re workings of American R&B, Black Sabbath came out of nowhere (Birmingham, actually) and offered the world something different. Slick production and self-indulgent musicianship gave way to thick, dark, and powerful riffs. This is music to play in a haunted house and it's brilliant fun. Geezer Butler's deathly throbbing bass, Tony Iommi's creepy, distorted guitar, and Ozzy's urgent and tortured vocal stylings bring this masterwork together.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE LAST AC/DC ALBUM I OWN, Oct. 30 2012
Back in Black not withstanding, this is an outstanding work and, regrettably, the final appearance by Bon Scott. One cannot say enough that can describe how good this album is. While Mutt Lang's production values are slick, they don't hide the amazing rawness of early AC/DC's sound and the strength of their musicianship and showmanship. I don't think that AC/DC every rocked this hard ever again.

2.0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER RUSH LIVE ALBUM...HOO-HUMM, April 29 2012
If you're going to get Rush's document of the 'Time Machine Tour' you will be better served by getting the DVD release. As for Rush on vinyl, it's a great idea. A fantastic idea, in fact. But instead of releasing a live album from the last tour, how about re-releases of 'All the World is a Stage' and 'Exit...Stage Left'? On 180gram vinyl? And the original master, produced by Terry Brown? Now, that would be sweet. And maybe a few select editions of their studio albums, like 'Moving Pictures, 'Caress of Steel', or 'A Farewell to Kings'? Better yet, how about the release, finally, of that live album that Rush never released, because they decided to release 'Moving Pictures' instead. Everyone knows that album, the one that was recorded in 1980 at the Palladium in NYC? Now, that's a worthwhile live document.

4.0 out of 5 stars AT LEAST IT'S OUT, April 29 2012
The long awaited Pink Floyd performance from their 'Division Bell' tour is here, and it's...okay. Division Bell was not exactly a strong release for this band, but the world tour in support of its release was a landmark event. Compared to the previous DVD release, 'Delicate Sound of Thunder', with the exception of 'Dark Side of the Moon' in its entirety, it's almost exactly the same show. All the amazing stage effects are there, from the massive pyro displays, to the stunning projections, to the hundreds of lasers in the face, are there. But the performance is kind of cold and calculated. It is as though the show was a massive light show, featuring a band. I'm not sure if one needs to be on drugs to enjoy the show, but it probably would help.

5.0 out of 5 stars WHEN PINK FLOYD REALIZED THEY WERE A BAND, March 16 2012
This review is from: Meddle (Audio CD)
With the departure of Syd Barrett, Pink Floyd has a lot of trouble establishing what it was going to be. Barrett, their principle song-writer and god-head, having succumbed to one last acid freak-out, left PF rudderless and without any musical direction. Good. Lots of experimentation later, PF found their direction, a series of albums later, PF released 'Meddle', a brilliant creation that forever removed PF from Barrett and prepared them for the success they would unleash with 'Dark Side of the Moon'. There is not a single bad track on this album. But climaxing with 'Echoes', as stellar as space-rock will ever get, PF takes the listener into new and higher realms of sonic delight that few, save for The Who, have been able to accomplish. Must have.

5.0 out of 5 stars LANDMARK BRILLANT ACHIEVEMENT, March 16 2012
Jimi Hendrix remains to this day and extraordinary talent of the first order. Creative beyond measure, Hendrix reached his apex with 'Electric Ladyland'. It is a compelling album on so many levels that even after repeated listening, this work remains fresh to the moment it was first played. An astonishing achievement and the definitive testimony of Hendrix's brilliance.

5.0 out of 5 stars COULDN'T WAIT TO USE IT, March 16 2012
This is a really good weight vest. Certainly less expensive than competing product, it has been a excellent companion on all my workouts. Easy to manage and wear, this vest will provide that needed weight-training edge in ones daily routine. Excellent product.

5.0 out of 5 stars BLACK-EST OF ALL SABBATH, March 16 2012
This was a landmark album for Black Sabbath at the time of its release. After a string of successful releases from their debut album, Black Sabbath opted for a work that was, in the minds of some, more commercial. However, in the minds of others, it was a more *artistic* statement concerning the band's direction. To be sure, the production on this album is amazing, and the contributions of Rick Wakeman on keyboards add a lot to Black Sabbath's music in terms of its musical textures. Regardless of all the super-group trappings that Black Sabbath was becoming known for, this album maintained that they would be the most darkest, most cynical, most threatening musical force around. An outstanding work.

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS WILL BE..., Nov. 23 2011

Bigger than the Bible. Really. This book is a compelling, extremely beautiful and *cheeky* photographic essay of that other part of the human body that, sometimes, gets left...behind.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE THIS IS MORE LIKE IT..., Nov. 15 2011
Over the course of the last several years, Rush has subjected their audience to an avalanche of live DVD releases (Not to mention an insane number of compilations) to the point where any Rush fan could get dangerously annoyed with their material of late. The DVD releases ran the gamut of promising but short efforts to outright documents of their sleepwalking live performances. Almost ready to give up, I watched 'Time Machine' and was pleasantly surprised. This DVD is an excellent production. Beginning with a conceptual video of the 'true' and hilarious origins of Rush, the video moves into Rush's performance in Cleveland. Maintaining the steam-punk theme throughout the show, Rush presents an energetic performance, filled with powerful musicianship, and playful interactions with the audience. And the audience shots for this show reveal a crowd that is an enthusiastic as the one that attended the 'Rush in Rio' show. Beautifully shot, well-lit, excellent sound, Rush finally got it completely right.
