5.0 out of 5 stars Great survival story., June 11 2003
This is an excellent, totally engrossing account of the author's quest to survive alone on the open seas for 76 days with a minimum of equipment and supplies. This is a real page-turner and is difficult to put down. Callahan faced his plight with a lot of courage, inventiveness and even humor. The parts dealing with him fighting off his shark companions are often quite funy. An excellent book for any fan of true-life adventures. Highly recommended

Dream Lovers: The Magnificent Shattered Lives of Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee - by Their Son Dodd Darin
by Dodd Darin
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Touching biography, June 11 2003
Dodd Darin is the only child of the late great Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee, the "Dream Lovers" of the title. I hesitated reading this book because most celebrity biographies written by the children of the subjects are often vindictive, slash and burn tell-alls. Not this book. Dodd Darin has written a touching, honest, heartfelt account of his parents lives, together and apart ,paying tribute to their good qualities while recognizing and accepting their shortcomings. The story told here is often quite sad, especially reading about Dee's current isolation and reclusiveness. The book is very well-written and is a fine tribute to the author's parents. Sandra Dee must be proud of her son.

5.0 out of 5 stars An enduring classic, June 11 2003
Even people who have not read anything by the great Agatha Christie have probably heard of this book. It is perhaps her most well-known work and has, of course, been made into an Academy Award winning film starring Albert Finney as Poirot. Murder on the Orient expressed has achieved worldwide renown because, simply, it is one of the greatest mysteries written by the greatest mystery writer of all time. It is extremely well-plotted and sharply written. Out of all Christie's books, this one contains the best cast of characters/suspects.The ending is a surprise (even though some other reviewers gave away the solution!) and very satisfying. This is a must-read for all mystery fans.

Agatha Raisin and the Case of the Curious Curate
Agatha Raisin and the Case of the Curious Curate
by M. C. Beaton
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great Agatha Raisin mystery, June 11 2003
Agatha Raisin and the Case of the Curious Curate is another fine entry in this popular long-running series by M.C. Beaton. Beaton has earned rave reviews from critics for her Agatha Raisin series and this entry is a perfect example of why. Agatha is her usual feistry but endearing self and manages to solve another murder in the supposedly sleepy vilage of Carsely. Beaton's writing again is fun, witty and very entertaining.Like all the other entries in this series, the book is rather short and leaves you wanting more. Beaton just keeps getting better and better with each effort. Highly recomended

5.0 out of 5 stars Christie with an Egyptian twist, June 9 2003
Although several of Agatha Christie's mysteries were set in the Middle East, this is the only one set in ancient times. Although historical mysteries were very unusual for Christie, she shows that she could have been a master of the genre if she had tried. Set in ancient Egypt, the characters in this book are so well-drawn and realistic that they practically spring off the page. I would not recommend this book to a Christie novice because I think you really have to have a fine appreciation of the Christie genius to fully appreciate Death Comes as the End.Overall, this is an excellent book that makes me wish Christie had written more of its kind.

4.0 out of 5 stars Agatha Christie was wrong!, June 9 2003
Christie felt that The Mystery of the Blue Train was her weakest book and in fact stated on occasion that she hated it. While it is not one of her top ten books in my estimation, it is still an excellent book, with good writing, fascinating characters, good plot development and classic Christie style and flair.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice biography of Vivian Vance, June 9 2003
I don't normally read celebrity biographies but as a die-hard I Love Lucy fan, I wanted to find out more about the woman known by the world primarily as Ethel Mertz. Vance's talent deserved more regognition than she's gotten and this book helps to shine the light on her a bit more. It's a well-written, entertaining book which explores Vance's life fromchildhood to her death a few yearsago. It tends to drag a bit after Vance's exit from show business but overall, it's definitely worth reading and a nice tribute to a fine actress
