2.0 out of 5 stars PAN & SCAN VERSION in this day and age?, May 16 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The colours on this DVD version are a huge improvement over the public domain DVD version that's been floating around the discount bins for decades. It's also very clear too, especially the daylight scenes. Unfortunately its still a pan & scan version which is noticeable whenever three people are in the same shot and you get half of someone's head cut off the edge. The musical score is sooo soapy, over done, invasive and manipulative. The book is way better, but film stands on its own. Glad I didn't pay too much for this but the pan and scan looks awful, the picture looks a bit squished too or Mel and Piper were way thinner back then.

1.0 out of 5 stars you get what you pay for, Aug. 4 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This lens hood is useless. I can see the hood in the frame of the picture. It has to be turned constantly to get it out of frame and then its not in a position to block any glare. It also difficult to mount on the lens. It's too high maintenance to use. It cost more to ship than to buy. Now I know why it was so cheap. It was delivered before the estimated time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good film Wrong Aspect Ratio, Sept. 8 2007
This review is from: Keeping Mum [Import] (DVD)
Enjoyed this film very much, its very warm and funny in a light way.

The picture looks great too, however the original film was filmed in 2.35:1 but the dvd release is cropped down to 1.77:1. The bonus footage is all in the original 2.35:1 and you can see how much of the film is lost due to cropping it down for 16x9 tv's. Its too bad a lot of UK movies are sold like this in N. America. The point of buying widescreen dvd's is to see them as they were shown in theatres without being physically edited down.

1.0 out of 5 stars good movie bad dvd, March 24 2005
This review is from: The Snow Walker (DVD)
I saw this movie with the cast and director during the Vancouver Film Festival a couple of years ago. It was a great film. It was filmed in a 2.35 : 1 aspect ratio. Unfortuately the dvd is cropped down to 1.85 : 1, thus cutting of a lot of the picture. Its too bad because the film utilizes the very widescreen extremely well to show off the vast Canadian landscape of the North and the recropping chops off 1/3rd of the picture. The film's true aspect ratio can be seen though only in short segments in a documentary included on the disc.

1.0 out of 5 stars Massively Flawed Single Player Game, Aug. 17 2004
This review refers strictly to the single player mode of this title. I can't believe this game was play tested by human beings and then allowed on the market! The A.I. of your teammates is appalling, the enemy A.I. is uneven throughout the game. Either they see & hit everything or nothing. The manual aim controls are slow and choppy no matter how many ways you set the controls. The levels can be long and complicated but the game has no checkpoints or in game saves thus leading to mind numbing repetition of the same level if you or your moron teammates screw up at any point. These are big problems which ruin this much hyped and way overly rated PS2 title. I couldn't recommend this game to my worst enemy but mostly I can't believe a company could release this game with so many glaring flaws.

1.0 out of 5 stars Stupid Canadian TVA Films DVDs, May 10 2004
This review is from: Jet Lag (DVD)
This is a warning that applies only to the Canadian dvd version of this film. I've recently purchased two movies distributed by TVA Films in Canada, "Jet Lag" and "Me Without You" on dvd. I was intensely disappointed to see that neither film was presented in its original widescreen format. Both dvds start at the proper theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1 during the opening credits but inexplicably switches to 1.75:1 during the rest of the film. All of the bloopers in the bonus section are in the proper aspect ratio. Why does this company do this? People who don't like the black borders aren't going to be pleased and the cineaste such as myself hate pan and scan, so who is this dvd supposed to please? My only option from now on is to completely avoid TVA distributed dvds.

1.0 out of 5 stars good movie poor dvd, Jan. 30 2004
I saw this on the big screen 3 years ago and loved it. It was warm, funny, well acted, wonderfully filmed and compelling. I was really looking forward to getting the dvd. I couldn't find it anywhere locally except on Amazon. Luckily I was able to rent it before buying it. The widescreen aspect ratio of the original theatrical cut was 2.35:1 but the dvd transfer is only 1.85:1, however the opening credits is in 2.35:1!? The rest of the movie is cropped off at 1.85:1 and it looks terrible. Its a huge dissappointment not to have the entire picture on the dvd.

5.0 out of 5 stars great looking dvd, Nov. 30 2001
This review is from: The Road Home (Bilingual) (DVD)
Great story, fantastic looking dvd, what more could you want? My only gripe is with the language tracks. Where's the cantonese or english dub? The only tracks available are mandarin and french? FRENCH? Not even cantonese subtitles! You may have guessed I'm Chinese/Cantonese. The picture looks excellent with rich colours and no scratches and the sound is very good too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Movie, Uneven DVD, Nov. 30 2001
This review is from: Gregory's Girl (Widescreen) (DVD)
I'm going to be hyper critical and say this dvd transfer is a bit uneven. Some parts of the movie looks like old seventies porn movies, soft, dark and grainy. The colours are a tad faded and the detail is soft. The old english dub sounds sharp, clear but a bit flat with no bass. The Scottish track is very dated and muffled compared to the dubbed track. This is very apparent if you switch back and forth between the two tracks during any music only parts of the movie. The film elements have a lot of scratches on it which is too bad. It looks like a 20 year old film. On the plus side the movie has lots of scene extensions compared to the old vhs version. It's like a Director's cut for those of us who know this film like the back of our hands! The colour overall is much better than the old vhs. The cover art stinks, I don't know why they didn't use the original poster art? But thank MGM for finally putting this out in N. America. This film and its sequel has been available in the U.K. for two years now! I hope they put out the sequel "Gregory's Two Girls" soon.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent Extras, Terrible & Uneven Transfer, Nov. 7 2001
I,ve been looking forward to this for quite some time, and it comes as quite a disappointment in terms of the look of the film itself. The space sequences are very dark and lack contrast and detail. The interior scenes at the beginning are way too warm and yellow. There are a lot of scratches on this transfer. The overall look of the picture is dull and blurry. This is all made very obvious to any viewer when you compare the movie's appearance to the dvd menu screens. The menus are rich and vibrant in colour and detail, where as the film itself is dark, flat and murky. Maybe the film's '70's cinematography is dated though, but other Robert Wise dvd's such as the "Sound of Music" look incredible! Not all the film is terrible but the tranfer is very uneven. 60% of the tranfer looks fine.
