Read this book or the content, not for literary strength, Jan 18 2004
I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Grove some time back. He's an intelligent man, with a powerful persona and strong sense of character. I was surprised then, when I picked up the text. Swimming Across did not meet my expectations from a literary perspective. The presentation is very simply written and seems to be directed at an individual with a 6th or 7th grade reading level. I nearly put the book down and opted for another as a result. The story however, is compelling. Mr. Grof and his family found a way to survive, compete, and eventually excel despite very long odds in Nazi and Communist dominated Hungary. Read this story for its content (it is stirring). Read this to understand the character development of a leader. It is likely that your respect for the individual (like mine) will have grown.

The Big Sleep, May 22 2003
I would have been better served to have read the previous review rather than assuming that this Exam Cram title would be as effective as most are. Don't waste your hard earned cash. Even though the Exam Cram books are not meant to be primary references, such titles should be (generally) error-free and well-organized. This text is neither and gives the appearance of having been introduced early solely ensure a place on the bookshelf before the competition. Ron Gilster's CCNA's for Dummy's book is much better as a second reference and has significantly more detail, and is better organized for that quick, day-before-the-test review. IMHO Tod Lammle's CCNA Study Guide is a best bet as a primary text.

The Big Sleep, May 22 2003
I would have been better served to have read the previous review rather than assuming that this Exam Cram would be as effective as most are. Don't waste your hard earned cash. This one is disjointed, error-prone, and as mentioned in my title... One Big Sleep. 1. Grab Tod Lammle's CCNA Study Guide as your primary text. 2. Even though you won't want people to see the title on your shelf, Gilster's CCNA's for Dummy's book is much better as a second reference. Well, not all is lost. At least I can use Sheldon's book to kindle a fire next winter...

Five Stars For Groth, May 18 2003
Far too few engineers can truly articulate what they know. Groth is one of them. His book is an excellent read and a very good review. The materials are pretty comprehensive and will get you through the exam, but a supplementary text like Tod Lammle's CCNA study guide should be at hand. There are always subtle issues that an author misses or doesn't provide enough detail on.The only downside here is that there are a couple of "important" test questions on the CD (one on subnetting and one on ISDN, for example)that were not well edited and the answers are wrong. That will get you in a bit of trouble on the exam. All that said, I'd certainly buy a second text from Groth. My presumption (in advance) would be that it would be well written and organized like this one.

Where did the guy learn to write?, Sep 15 2002
Having practiced digital logic design in its many forms (from basic digital implementations to VHDL), over a period of 20+ years, I must state that this is possibly the most poorly written text I have ever seen on the discipline.

A Good Starter Once You Get Past the Win2K MySql Install, Jun 7 2002
Can't go 3 1/2 stars and 3 isn't fair, so 4 it is. The author has done a pretty good job and uses an easy to understand colloquial style of communications that takes you through the nuts and bolts of an apache, mysql, and php install. She completely misses on Win2K though. I wish I'd read some of the MySQL install comments here before being forced to "figure things out." There is an errata section on the website that caught a few problems but Win2K and MySQL still isn't addressed and emails to the author were left unanswered. Solution for Win2K users.. go to the MySQL website and download the newest (non 30-day eval) version and .PDF documentation. The process of getting MySQL running as a service for WIn2K is addressed on page 100 or so. Then... go back to the book. The examples run well and are truly instructional.
