A recommended informational and instructional guide, July 17 2004
Expertly written by sled dog racer and Siberian Husky breeder Margaret A. Koehler (who has earned Best of Breed at a national speciality and the internationally famous Westminster Kennel Club), The Siberian Husky: Live The Adventure is a very highly recommended informational and instructional guide to everything anyone would want to know about the faithful and hardy Siberian Husky -- a canine best known for its tenacity in the sled harness, but which is also quite widespread as a beloved and popular personal and family canine companion. Black-and-white photographs nicely illustrate this detailed account focused upon caring for, breeding, and training these majestic and loyal animals.

A detailed biography of a unique and dedicated woman, July 17 2004
Dr. Margaret Phillips (1876-1951) was educated as a medical doctor and went on to spend forty-three years in China as a Christian missionary dedicated to improving the health and circumstances of women, eradicate the scourge of tuberculosis, and provide medical services to legions of children with a distressing spectrum of all manner of illnesses and injuries. The Lady Named Thunder is a compelling and detailed biography of a unique and dedicated woman who, in a era when women were discouraged from engaging in "unladylike" activities and careers, was uncompromising and unflinching in her lifetime of service to the Chinese people -- including learning Mandarin so that she could translate medical texts and teach medicine to student doctors and nurses, as well as communicate effectively with her patients, their families, and their fellow villagers. Clifford H. Phillips (adopted at the age of two by Dr. Margaret Phillips) has done his mother full justice in this detailed and inherently fascinating telling of his mother's life and work.

A stage drama of the end of Walt Whitman's life, July 17 2004
Judith Grace's Good-bye My Fancy: With Walt Whitman In His Last Days is a stage drama of the end of Walt Whitman's life based upon verbatim transcriptions of conversations he had with his secretary and friend, Horace Traubel. These conversations were faithfully recorded by Traubel who visited Whitman every day at the famed poet's home. Grace also draws upon a selection of poems and letters by Whitman and his friends to create a thoroughly engaging dialogue so skillfully crafted that the reader has a feeling of being there and sharing in the very presence of a great man. Good-bye My Fancy is enthusiastically recommended reading. It can only be hoped that sometime this brilliant dramatization will appear on stage or screen.

Outstanding individual contributors to explain Zen, July 17 2004
The Buddha Eye: An Anthology Of The Kyoto School And Its Contemporaries is a collection of essays written by a variety of Japanese authors for "The Eastern Buddhist", a spiritual and influential journal first founded in 1921. The nuances of thought and understanding become clear through the use of thoughtful prose and moving poetry; the ability of outstanding individual contributors to explain Zen in a manner that makes sense to Western ears is almost unparalleled in Buddhist literature today. The essays include "What is the 'I'?", "God, Emptiness, and the True Self", "The Great Path of Absolute Other-Power", and much more. Very highly recommended.

An absolutely compelling look into history itself, July 17 2004
The third and final volume of Indian testimony assembled by award-winning author Richard G. Hardorff, Indian Views Of The Custer Fight: A Source Book deftly presents thirty-five interviews and statements from Native Americans who were eyewitnesses to this historic battle. It was the last time there would be a major Native American success in a battlefield confrontation with American armed forces. Twenty-nine Sioux and nine Cheyenne detail events in their own words, from the point where soldiers were first detected in their march toward the Indian settlement to the end of the battle. Some of the interviews are in very straightforward question-and-answer format; others are more narrative. An absolutely compelling look into history itself, and a superb primary source worthy of American History reference shelves.

Thought-provoking poetry, steeped in her closeness to nature, July 17 2004
Page P. Coulter's Pond Fire is a work of literate and thought-provoking poetry, steeped in her closeness to nature and observations of the subtle nuances of the human condition. Simple, poignant free-verse captures the spirit of experiences like a photograph of time itself. Pond Afire: When morning is breathless / and the mountains are dark with sleep, / when the sun blazes across the pond / lighting the rusty trees, / let me paddle beside you. // Everything I've ever said to you / blazes across the pond, / the rusted trees their pocket. / See how darkness / lifts out of the bog? // Come paddle the blaze with me, / let our words dance / all full of passion and flesh, / let them be strewn along the blaze / of this breathless day.
