King at his best, Jun 7 2012
A long time favourite; a marvellous writer. Thomas King's sense of humour and narrative drive make him one of Canada's best.

Still relevant, Dec 2 2010
I read this many years ago, but Findlay's vision of the war remains in my memory as vivid and telling. I recommend this to any reader who wants in insight into the experience of the First World War.

An astonishing achievement, Nov 19 2010
Joan Thomas' Curiosity is the best novel I've read in years. I was completely captured by this story, and by the way the tale was spun. Highly highly recommended for lovers of literature. I wonder if Jane Austen could have done any better.

A moving parable of war, Sep 21 2010
For those lucky enough never to have experienced war, Marin's chilling moral tale will offer profound insight. To those who have shared her experience, it will no doubt ring frighteningly true.

Livingston's best yet, Aug 14 2010
Greedy Little Eyes is Livingston at her best, and that's very very good. Livingston examines the lives of her characters unflinchingly, without sentimentality or judgement, but with compassion and understanding. A must-read.

Beautiful writer, Mar 14 2010
Just finished this book. While Moore is such a beautiful writer, I found the overall structure of the novel not quite right. There seemed to be at least three plots, and they weren't satisfactorily integrated. Still well worth the read for the quality of writing and the voice. Loved the protagonist.

Best book of short stories, Dec 10 2009
This is the inimitable Lisa Moore's first book of short stories. While I've read all her work, up until her recent February, this was my favourite. The story are completely compelling, exquisitely written and very wise. Wonderful book.

Stunningly beautiful prose, Dec 10 2009
This is a remarkable first novel from Leslie Walker William. A rare combination of writing that makes you want to savour each sentence and a plot that won't let your attention go. Williams unflinchingly takes on the legacy of racism in the American South and its devastating effects without ever over simplifying the psychological motivations her characters. A must-read.

Wonderful book, Oct 23 2009
Readers who are being introduced to Michael Crummey's fiction through the Giller short-listed Galore will also want to read The Wreckage, a marvellous book steeped in the historical period, beautifully written. Here's a poet who really can write plot and fiction. A wonderful book.

Exquisite new novel, Oct 23 2009
I find this Moore's most compelling book yet. I've loved her short stories, her voice, her compassion, wit and humour. She's a writer's writer, and her language is fully alive. This new novel is just stunning, a heart-breaker, wise and very wonderful. Why on earth didn't this receive every prize there is? Wasn't even short listed for the GG, Giller, to my knowledge. Read this book. It will make your life better.
