5.0 out of 5 stars Help with Tarot, July 13 2004
This review is from: Book of Thoth (Paperback)
The Aleister Crowley Thoth Tarot comes with a booklet to help interpret the cards. The definitions are not very in depth and vague. I read a shorter book by a different author and helped a lot. This one is by Crowley himself. A few pages description of interpretation and commentary is included for each card. It was very helpful. Now whenever I do tarot readings from the Thoth deck I can have easy help. Recommended for more advanced students of both Tarot and Crowley. This one didn't take very long for me to read as I can read very well and liked the book a great deal so as to keep turning the pages. I could easily see how this could seriously disturb someone, but some thought it was funny.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic EP, July 4 2004
This review is from: Thralleamonsweatlive (Audio CD)
This is the most famous Danzig release because of the success on MTV of an alleged live version of the song Mother. Regardless of Mother, this features some inspired new tracks in It's Coming Down and Violet Fire as well as an inspired mini live set. In the past I would've complained that it should've been either a full studio album or a full live album but you can't change history and this is Danzig's breakthrough. Another one besides the first Danzig album more mainstream audiences got.

5.0 out of 5 stars Straight Forward, July 4 2004
This review is from: Danzig (Audio CD)
This is easily Danzig's most straight forward album of his solo career. The most straight forward Misfits is Earth A.D. and the most straight forward Samhain is Final Descent. Pretty basic, at times disturbing satanic metal that sticks out for its originality. The Danzig demon skull mascot is original, the lyrics are original, the vocals distinct and original and the musicianship reminiscent of Black Sabbath but more straight forward. Easily my favorite Danzig album because it's the most basic. Danzig was notorious for the experimental Blackacidevil but even the second release, Lucifuge, was more blues-based. The third album How the Gods Kill is also a straight forward album but heavier than this one. 4p was experimental but less so than Blackacidevil. Satans Child the 6th album is Blackaicdevil but catchier and not as utterly drenched in techno. The 7th album I Luciferi is also a straight forward album but kind of over done but not over done to the point where it is a bad album; it is slightly overdone in the riff and lyric department but an enjoyable release. This one is the album that some more mainstream metal fans got due to the success of the single for the song mother. The other releases are more cult albums for Danzig diehards.

5.0 out of 5 stars What I Wanted, June 25 2004
This book was exactly what I needed to aid me in my use of the Aleister Crowley Thoth Tarot. I was able to use it successfully, but what I was looking for was deeper meaning of the cards and I wanted to get even better at it. Including in the book are pictures and descriptions of all the cards with a brief explanation of the deeper meaning and symbolism of the card along with helpful hints on what type of answers you were looking for from the cards. An invaluable resource for those seriously interested in the Thoth Tarot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nerdy Death Metal Wannabes, June 21 2004

This is the best release from the band. No weak tracks! I like the intro, a sample from The Devil's Rain.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Transition into Metal, June 21 2004
This review is from: Calling Dr. Luv (Audio CD)
This was the band's heaviest release thus far in their careers, so heavy they toured with Danzig. The band have since become death/black metal wannabes and all the fun went out of them to the poinyt where I'm bitter about this once great band. Where's Shane Lassen when you need him? He may be dead, but he still lives. This is my second favorite release from this band behind Kiss the Goat. Varies from pop metal to their regular to that point industrial.

5.0 out of 5 stars I am No Longer Heavy Metal, June 21 2004
While at first I used to be black metal and liked this book a lot as I was into the horror films mentioned, it was just that- my taste in movies. As I aged slowly I got frankly tired of most black metal as I owned the most important albums from every band I ever wanted. I began looking at this book as the best the author had done, as his other books to this point, Lucifer Rising and Dissecting Marilyn Mansom, are now out of date. I needed a makeover and I went gothic. I found out bands like Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails are not gothic at all and get poked fun at. Different categories of heavy metal may have gothic themes, but it isn't gothic either it's heavy metal. I now have all the Bauhaus albums and all the Rozz Williams era Christian Death albums. This book had an impact on my life and am now one of those 24/7s. I used to be a joke because I liked Manson now I am legit. If you are seriously into goth, whatever you do don't listen to Nine Inch Nails or Marilyn Manson.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, June 20 2004
This has all the makings of a good Lovecraft adatpion, namely Jeffery Combs and the Necronomicon. 3 stories linked together by the mysterious black book called Necronomicon. Really gory, but doesn't take itself too seriously. Combs is the actor king of H.P. Lovecraft adaptions and Brian Yuzna is also a really good contributor to Lovecraft films, namely his skills as a producer and the more recent Beyond Re-Animator. Worth a look for anyone even casually interested in modern horror films.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lovecraft's First Film Adaption is Decent, June 20 2004
This review is from: Haunted Palace [Import] (VHS Tape)
This is a decent adaption of H.P. Lovecraft and while generally regarded higher than most of them by critics it lacks the entertainment value of even something like Bleeders, even more so Unnamable, Castle Freak and Lurking Fear. There's not even any spice in another older film adaption like Dunwhich Horror. A straight forward gothic film that lacks the modern convieniences of gore and nudity. The more recent Resurrected based also on the same novel, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, is a superior film version of this story. Recommended for diehard Lovecraft fans and diehard old school gothic film fans only.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best on the Market, June 19 2004
This is by far the best Aleister Crowley biography on the mass market because the other books are biased and not very good. This one, however is straight from the author and he has nothing to hide, not even his sexuality as he admits he liked both sexes. His childhood was the most interesting part. The son of a brewer from a strict Christian sect that he rebelled against and inherited a small fortune is a key element in the book. He also details his many mountain climbing expeditions and was one of the best in the world. I also really liked the parts on his ascension to the head of the Golden Dawn, eventually having a falling out with Mathers and being expelled for moral depravity. If you were wondering if cats had 9 lives, Crowley details how he tortured a cat to see if it did. This part reminded me of Edgar Allen Poe's The Black Cat. Like I said, avoid the countless biased biographies from others. Those are the books his detractors like and are cheesey. An essential look at one of the biggest bad asses in world history.
