Lords of the Realm 3
Lords of the Realm 3

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm an optimist, Mar 9 2004
This review is from: Lords of the Realm 3 (CD-ROM)
Since Lords 2 Royal Collection with Siege Pack is one of my all time favorite computer games I have always had high hopes for Lords 3. I placed my advance order in April 2003. On March 7, 2004 I was delighted to discover that it is finally going to come out March 16 for only $20.00. However, when I checked the Sierra website to see what they had to say I discovered that the stated minimum system requirements are Pentium III with 800 MHZ and they recommend a Pentium IV with 1.5 GHZ. Since this exceeds the capabilities of my computer system and I have no plans to update soon I am forced to regretably cancel my order. I gave it 4 stars anyway out of gratitude for Lords 2 and because I want it to be a successful game. I'm an optimist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Right on target!, July 26 2003
I was born in 1953 and grew up in the 1960s. I attended the Chicago Public Schools where I was taught, as I'm sure that many of you were, that the "McCarthy Era" was a terrible time when innocent people cowered in fear that the ogre Senator Joseph McCarthy would wrongfully accuse them of being Communists and ruin their lives. It was described as if it were the return of the Salem witch trials, only worse. Senator McCarthy was invariably described as a publicity seeking demagogue who never actually found a single traitor and who was finally exposed as worse than wrong, a shameless self promoter who recklessly destroyed the lives of many good people. As an adult I occasionally would notice that the real facts were quite different. For example, let's take the case of Mr. Vladimir P. who used to regularly appear on American television in the late 80s and early 90s at about the time of the collapse of the Soviet empire. He was invariably introduced as a "journalist" from the Soviet Union. I discovered that Mr. P. was born as an American Jew whose father was employed at the movie studios in Hollywood until he was "outed" as a Communist or Communist sympathizer. So he did what any other innocent and loyal American would do when wrongfully accused of being soft on communism, he took his family to the Soviet Union where his son Vladimir became a devoted member of the Communist Party and a "journalist" for Pravda, the mouthpiece for the Soviet government . He then came to America where he became a houseguest of the host of a certain well known nightly news program and a business partner of a well known TV talk show host. So many times I noticed that "innocent" people like these turned out to be pretty much what Senator McCarthy and his supporters said they were. I also noted that our great press and media never seemed to notice this, or at least they never mention it, nor did the great minds of academia, for that matter. In this book "Treason", Ann Coulter does a better job than anyone else ever has at laying out the true facts about what the records show actually happened. SENATOR MCCARTHY WAS RIGHT! Alger Hiss WAS a Soviet agent! The Rosenbergs DID PASS ATOMIC SECRETS TO THE SOVIETS! If anything McCarthy underestimated the Communist infiltration into our federal government. He was a conscientious, patriotic American who may have done more than anyone else in facilitating the ultimate victory of the American way over the Stalinist totalitarian Soviet Union. Ann Coulter is becoming as effective a spokesperson for conservative Americans as Rush Limbaugh was ten years ago. Her method is to confront liberals with the truth and the liberals HATE her for it. It's as if the liberal establishment collectively decided in the 30s and 40s to abandon the truth about their peculiar relationship with the Communists and have been lying about it ever since. Now, all that they have left are the lies. Ann Coulter has the truth and she gives it to you straight. I imagine that it must be very scary for the liberals.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm a bit disappointed!, Jun 8 2003
This review concerns the much anticipated RUSCICO DVD released on June 3, 2003 by Image Entertainment after about a six month delay. First of all, it is undoubtedly the best version of War and Peace that you can get. It is, of course, the definitive Russian 1967 extravaganza reputed to be the most expensive movie ever made and paid for by the taxpayers of the former USSR. I should mention that I also own a VHS copy of this film by Kultur, the dubbed in English standard screen size version, and I am apparently one of the few people who will admit to liking the Kultur version. The new Image DVD is definitely far superior in many ways. It has a magnificent widescreen picture and includes scenes not seen in the Kultur version. There are, however, some problems with the soundtrack. If you select English as the language with the subtitles turned off approximately 40% of the dialog is still in Russian and English subtitles will come on anyway. This sometimes happens in the middle of a conversation. The narrator is different than in the Kultur dubbed version and the translation is somewhat different. I personally liked the Kultur translation better in some spots. For example, at the very beginning and at the very end the narrator states the basic point or argument that If evil men can work together to get what they want, then good men should be able to do so also. In this new translation evil men is replaced by corrupt people and good men is replaced by honest people, and to get what they want is replaced by become a force. There are whole conversations that take place in French so that you must have the English subtitles on to get this (if you do not speak French), but then they are also on when English is spoken (I hate this). There are scenes during the battle of Borodino where Napoleon has brief conversations with his officers. In the Kultur dubbed version you get what they are saying but in this new Image DVD they are speaking French without any translation or even English subtitles and at least one remark you cannot even hear in French. This is very unfortunate because when Napoleon is on the screen is important to this film. The dubbed in English voices seem to me to be a lot like the ones in the earlier Kultur dubbed version so that I think that they may have used the same soundtrack for the DVD as in the Kultur version for dialog that they felt was correctly translated and then left in the original Russian with English subtitles for dialog that they disagreed with the translation, or something like this . I wish that they had simply put all of the Russian dialog into dubbed English (when English language is selected) and then had English subtitles when French or another foreign language is spoken. I find it annoying the way it is now. I paid about $$ for this DVD and, although I certainly would not ask for my money back I think they owed me a better job on the English language soundtrack. Thank you.

2.0 out of 5 stars On second thought!, April 8 2002
Hi everybody! I really trashed this movie when I first viewed and reviewed it. After leaving it on the shelf for over a year I decided to try again and I admit that I may have been a little too harsh in my criticism the first time. I'm still disappointed that it failed to live up to the hype but this movie DVD does have some redeeming qualities, especially if you start it at the beginning and watch it all the way through as if you were at a drive in theater. I didn't do that the first time, I just watched the two featured movies and skipped the "extras". The trailers from other Doris Wishman movies were very good and I plan to buy some of them when they finally come out on DVD. Now that I've seen Gigi Darlene and Darlene Bennett in the "Olga" movies and other movies I can better appreciate them in these movies. I decided to write a second review rather than "edit" my previous one so that you can still use it. Good luck and thanks!

4.0 out of 5 stars This is the REAL Godzilla!, Jan 7 2002
This review is from: Godzilla 2000 (Widescreen) (DVD)
Forget Matthew Broderick! This Japanese movie has the REAL Godzilla that those of us who were kids in the 60s grew up with and love, as well as the familiar Godzilla music and themes. In the spirit, presumably, of "Independence Day" this movie spoofs a number of famous scf-fi classics such as: Independence Day, War of the Worlds, Superman, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Alien, and especially, Twister. A disillusioned young Japanese scientist has resigned from his academic career to found the "Godzilla Prediction Network", which he runs with the help of his smart as a whip (approximately) 10 year old daughter. They are joined by a young, ambitious, Japanese woman journalist who believes that they can help her advance her career with a scoop about Godzilla. Meanwhile, the Japanese government has discovered a giant meteor at the bottom of the sea and attempts to raise it. Well, you can well imagine what's gonna happen. I predict that traditional Godzilla fans will enjoy this movie.

4.0 out of 5 stars Soledad Miranda at her best!, Jan 7 2002
This is one of Jesus Franco's best known and received movies. It is the follow up movie to "Vampiros Lesbos" with pretty much the same cast and crew. Susann Korda, also called "Soledad Miranda", is the wife of a brilliant, but fragile medical doctor/scientist who commits suicide after his work is denounced by the medical establishment. Since her life is now ruined she resolves to seduce and destroy those she blames for her misfortune and goes after them, one by one. Supposedly a loose remake of his own "The Diabolical Dr. Z", this movie is more of an art film, as the plot is minimal, and really no more than an excuse for the kinky sex and murder scenes. This movie wouldn't work as well as it does if not for the incredible appeal of Susann Korda who unfortunately was killed in a car crash soon after making this movie.

4.0 out of 5 stars A guilty pleasure!, Jan 7 2002
This review is from: Humanoids From Deep [Import] (DVD)
This movie is the ultimate Roger Corman guilty pleasure. It is also Doug McClure's best movie, even though he was grossly overweight. The humanoids are the result of genetic engineering gone awry. They attack a remote fishing community to get nubile young women. In the words of the female scientist, "they are driven to mate with human females in order to advance their species on the evolutionary scale." Yeah! You gotta love it. I first saw this about 20 years ago, at a theater in Chicago's Loop, where a large part of the audience was African (I'm white). The guy in front of me was a young black guy who was having a great time rooting for the monsters. "That's it! Get that redneck! Mess him up! Ha! Ha!"

5.0 out of 5 stars A forgotten masterpiece of horror!, Jan 6 2002
This movie somehow doesn't seem quite as scary as when it first came out 40 years ago, yet still must rank as one of the best and scariest movies ever made. I first saw it as a child and have never forgotten it. It is unfortunate that this movie has been largely forgotten by the public (and movie critics). In the early part of the 19th century two medical doctors, one young, and the other his older mentor, pass through a remote part of Romania on their way to a medical convention in Russia and become involved in the machinations of an extremely evil witch who was destroyed two hundred years before and is seeking to return from the dead by stealing the life of her lookalike descendent. Many of the scenes have been copied in dozens of later movies but never as good as this original. The action includes vampires, spooky castles with secret passageways, weird portraits that change, eery coaches, scary graveyards, and more! This movie made Barbara Steele a star and the queen of horror throughout the sixties. The way that I heard it, at about 23 years old she had already been under contract to at least two major studios who felt that she had star potential but couldn't figure out how to use her. Then Mario Bavo cast her in this movie and made her a star.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very funny movie!, Jan 6 2002
My two sisters, who are both public school teachers, think that this movie is hilarious. I didn't like it quite as much as they did but I agree that it is very funny. Ben Stiller is a male nurse who goes with his fiance over the Christmas holidays to meet her parents Robert De Nero and Blythe Danner (also known as Gwyneth Paltrow's real life mom). In his eagerness to make a good impression and gain acceptance he suffers through incredible humiliations and misadventures. I love the song "Fool for Love". I don't think that this movie is for everyone because there is definitely an elitist flavor to it so that poor people and working class people are probably not going to enjoy it as much as yuppie types. But on the other hand, people that shop online and read these reviews are probably exactly the kind of people who will enjoy this the most.

4.0 out of 5 stars A spectacular sci-fi event!, Jan 6 2002
This review is from: Starship Troopers (DVD)
First of all, this is a Paul Verhoeven movie, and all of his movies are stunningly beautiful pieces of cinematography. The characters, particularly the women, are incredibly good looking. I don't know why this movie didn't do better at the box office. The buzz that I heard was that the studio didn't market it well. Unlike "Independance Day", which successfully blended sci-fi, patriotism, and comedy, "Starship Troopers" is great sci-fi but takes a darker, more cynical view of patriotism, and the comedy is more subtle and tongue in cheek, as if you are supposed to roll your eyes and shake your head. Some scenes are intended to gross you out and the violence is extremely graphic. That said, the spaceship scenes are as good as "Star Wars" or "Star Trek" and the special effects are as good as "The Mummy". Against the wishes of his rich parents, high school hotshot Casper Van Dien joins the starship troopers to please his gorgeous girlfriend Denise Richards who is going to the Fleet Academy to become a starship pilot. Another classmate is a vivacious blonde who also joins the starship troopers because she is carrying a torch for our hero and wants to be near him. Their lives are totally changed when we go to war against a race of alien bugs from another star system. That's the story. As a note of interest in the post 9-11 era, at the end of the movie we end up with the starship troopers pulling the top bug out of a cave on a planet that looks like Afghanistan. As a wise and funny man once said, "It's deja vu all over again!"
