5.0 out of 5 stars An eternal celebration to the friendship!, July 10 2004
This review is from: Babette's Feast (Widescreen) (DVD)
Babette is a film which inspires you to to be a better person. It's a splendid story about the last possibilities of a lonely human being as Stephane Audran is capable to do in a community.
The multiple readings you can make are countless ; the camera is a silent witeness to show us the unforgettable dinner in what Audran makes a tour de force acting. We had to expect thirteen years for finding out a similar film in its meaning: Amelie in 2001.
The question is not if you must to acquire this movie ; but how can you live without this one?
One of the ten movies from the eighties : A timeless gift from Dennmark to the whole world.

5.0 out of 5 stars All happiness demands its prize!, July 10 2004
There we have a well remade from the James Cain's novel . It's good to remind that Visconti made a superb film in 1941 with Ossesione but without this cast and this atmosphere ; Visconti is concerned about other issues and abandons the clues of the film noir.
Nicholson is hired to work in a gas station ; the seductive Jessica Lange (who lives a ficticious live with an alcoholic and inhuman greek husband) establishes the chemical and sexual rapprot with Nicholson and become lovers.
There will be too much to watch in this sordid , nocturnal and bitter tale ; but the dazzling direction of Nichols , the ravishing acting of Lange and the cold blooded mind of Nicholson make a team hard to equal . There are smart twists about Macbeth and his wife in this one (a man without ambition is not a man) . I've always thought the film noir is the last son of the greek tragedy: any happiness is innocent ; and only under this gaze it's possible to understand and to discuss a film like this.
Excellent and fundamental in your golden collection. A cult movie and a classic sample of the purest film noir.
It's remarkable to state that the best trilogy of films noir in the eighties were with this one ; Bad timing and Body heat .

5.0 out of 5 stars Juliette Greco: an expressive voice!, July 10 2004
Juliette Greco established as one of the great singers in this decade in which Piaf signed her style. However Greco owned a magic voice , warmth and deeply suggestive ; Parlez d'amour , soul les ciel de Paris (to me is the best version in the market) ; you'll never get tired about her charisma , her velvet touch and her sensual inflexions , loaded with feeling and sincerity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kinetic script!, July 9 2004
This is a movie plenty of action. The script runs about an old thief who decides make the las robery. Thirty five millions in gold is a great temptation . But suddenly there will be a twist of fate.
Wonderful locations and excellent special effects. Shuterland as always, steals the show. Walberg is OK and the cosmic beauty of Charlize Theron plays a convincing role.
There are many hair raising sequences.
A good entertainment but without the punch of the previous version from the sixties.

5.0 out of 5 stars An unforgettable film!, July 9 2004
This review is from: Paths of Glory (Full Screen) (DVD)
This is one the finest works of Stanley Kubrick. There are few movies in the cinema story so shocking like this. The nasty human condition and the greed of a General makes he sents a command under Kirk Douglas's service to a real suicide. It's imposible reach the desired goal.
To save his reputation they are sent to a jury arguing cowardy .
This is a heavyweight anti war movie. Kirk Douglas in one of his most powerful roles in his career.
A cult movie!
A must in your collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars A script with holes but watchable!, July 9 2004
This review is from: High Crimes (Widescreen) (DVD)
Who really believes a lawyer may defend to her husband? Weird jury. Don´t you?
But if you let that point outside , you will watch an interesting film with a bit of film noir . Freeman plays an alcoholic lawyer who suddenly must accepth a defiant case .
Ashley Judd plays a convincing role ; she ´s one of the most beautiful actress in the world and many times the camera reminds us. However the script is surrounded of smart crossroads.
Watch James Caviezel as Ron Chapman . Carl Franklin is a consistent film maker.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the top ten movies of the nineties if not the best!, July 8 2004
This review is from: Ulysses' Gaze (DVD)
This film deserves all the supreme adjectives that you can imagine. Much more than a simple film ; this work will let you thinking due its deep and disturbing ideas involved. It deals about the human condition , the seek for the epic sense of our life , the bitter sight about the western civilization , the decadence of Greece in the actual world , the weight of the memory , the old images of our parents , the nosthalgy for our beloved country , the vulgarity vs. the aristos , the tragedy of a world that has lost its center , the insanity of the Balcan war , the reflexion about the ancient mythology , the fall of Lenin statue in the Danube , the unforgettable sequence between Kaitel and Josephson in that dark room in which Erland Josephson thinks in loud voice : I{m a cinema lover ; a collector of lost images!. This is a mythical journey through the devasted and hopeless Europe.
I don't know why , but i reminded all along the film this statement from Curzio Malaparte : "Europe is dead , because its sons are born from dead mothers". This thought emerges from Malaparte's pen when he watches a dying mother when his baby is born at once!
Let me tell you something . I've watching almost the films of this poet : Theo Angelopoulus , this film maker is at the level of the giants , I mean Tarkovsky , Bresson , Bergman or Fellini . And if you inquire me about his masterpiece this one wins by far .
Angeloulus thought in Al Pacino at first , but Pacino was busy in another work . So he decided for Kaitel and believe me : this became a wise decision , because Keitel has been one of the giants actors all over the world . And in this case Kaitel makes a personal tour de force and breathtaking acting .
There are so many issues involved in this picture that I hardly may comment in this brief review. But if you want to convince by yourself about an artistic film , this is for you.
Cannes : Grand Jury Prize winner 1995.

4.0 out of 5 stars Schock film!, July 8 2004
This review is from: Beyond Borders (Bilingual) (DVD)
This movie is deeply bitter. It's touchimg and it deals with a premise that we forget too many times , inmersed as we are in our daily activities.
In a beautiful wedding a doctor will suddenly appear and will denounces the injustice for having denied them an important amount of money for the homeless and poor people from Africa.
This breakthrough will twist the life of Sarah Jordan (Angelina Jolie) and she will become the most exhaustive fighter for this noble cause.
Campbell makes a good and haunting movie , even there are some irrelevant scenes , but you never miss the interest in the story . Obviously this world of injustice will generate the unavoidable atraction between them .
Jolie gives a very realistic portrait.
The rest of the story runs for you .
Interesting story , above the average .

5.0 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing script!, July 8 2004
This review is from: The Believer [Import] (DVD)
This film is deeply disturbing. We are in front of one of the challenging works made from the independent films. Winner of the Sundance in 2001 ; the movie deals about an outlaw from the jew religion who decides to make a breakthrough with his past traditions seeking for answers . He's a very clever man and very often he made extreme questions to his teachers.
So he makes the whole cycle and becomes Nazi as a rebelness signal , but his memories are stronger and keeps in the deep of his soul respect from the learned traditions . The dialogues are a real tour de force , and there are many disturbing questions without answers.
And since the movie has rapture moments that will remind you to Taxi Driver and American Story X, the film is far beyond from the other two, and it demands a major attention from you.
One of the most powerful cult movies from this new century!

Sibelius: Symphonies
Sibelius: Symphonies

4.0 out of 5 stars One sincere tribute!, July 8 2004
This review is from: Sibelius: Symphonies (Audio CD)
This set has peak and lows. The second symphony has a hyper romantic approach ; that's its weak point. The third symphony is well built, besides it lacks the nature blow with its wildful force. The first symphony has always been a hazardous for many conductors. It has too much influence from Tchaikovsky ; and Bernstein knows it ; he avoids it , even the reading is warmth.
The best achievements in the set are the four and the sixth . I've never heard a sixth so well made ; the woodwinds , the strings give that atmosphere that demands this complex work. The fourth is unforgettable , but there's a performance of Beecham in the fifties with the Royal Philarmonic literally unique. The seventh is OK, but there are other options.
The fifth is weak , and my favorite versiona are two: Segerstam and Koussevitzki.
Anyway I bought this set eight years ago under The Royal Edition. I recommend you this set , Maazel Vienna , Segerstam and all you can get from Koussevitski.
If you request me by Anthony Collins - London Symphony (out of stock in the most of stores) I must confess, Collins has no equals in the Second .
The best first to me is Victor de Sabata (New York Philarmonic)(See my review about De Sabata)
