5.0 out of 5 stars Aliens....., July 11 2006
This review is from: New Black (Audio CD)
Chances are the average listener will find SYL very irritating.

The velocity that this band plays at is mind blowing.

The New Black follows very close on the heels of Alien an effort that displayed main man Devin Townsends mathmatical insanity note for note perfectly.

Gene Hoglan formely of the early 80's death metal band Dark Angel only becomes a better drummer with every new SYL cd.

He has no equal!!!

Jed Simon & Byron Stroud(Fear Factory)compliment and add to the wall of sound created by Gene & Devin with equal distinctive brilliance.

Beleive me when I say if your blown away by the intensity you hear on of their cd's the show these gentlemen put on is astronomical.

I would love to see Slayer & SYL play together.

Both of these groups defy logic & reason & the very laws of physics with the sheer volume of their music. The only difference I can see between Slayer & SYL is that SYL have a sense of humor.

I saw Lad several months back and Devin had me laughing so hard I had tears streaming down my face and I couldnt breathe for allmost 45 minutes.

Love em or hate em Strapping Young Lad are the band to end all bands.

If your not listening allready start right now!!!!

I bought this on 9/11/01.

It was early in the morning & I had no idea what was going on in the world yet.

I was focused on two things getting to work and buying the new Slayer cd.

My job at the time was right next door to a small record store.

By the time I got into work I was told to go home.

It was then I was informed.

It was another 24 hours b4 I remebered that I had bought this cd.

So I popped it in my walkman and sat on my porch listening and reading along to God Hates Us All.

By the end of the 1st song I was in tears.

Allthough not what some would call"PATRIOTIC"nor could anyone for better or worse make any connections to this cd or the events that took place on the day of its release there was/is still a noteable ambiance of frustration and anger that should not be dismissed just because this is some metal band.

In a way Slayer are a true representation of freedom of expression in this country.

Theres no reason why Slayer cant be mentioned next to the greats(Guthrie,Dylan etc)cept for the fact that they play really abrasive metal but none the less shouldnt they be honered just the same?!

My better half is amoung those who just cant get past the fact that they are LOUD.

I convinced her to see them live with earplugs(hey it was a compramise!)and she was floored.

Not by how heavy or how well they played just by the sheer crackling energy these guys produce even b4 they play a single note.

Slayer are an important voice in the world of music.

One day everyone else will realise this or maybe its better that they just stay the f@#k away.

Yeah I like that idea alot better.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Funky Bunch., Dec 25 2005
This review is from: Four Brothers (Widescreen) (DVD)
Having seen countless theatrical trailers for this film I had my mind made up that this would be very bad.
So I rented it and reluctantly gave it a spin.
Im very glad I did.
Director John Singleton is allways hit or miss for me mostly miss but Brothers is an entertaining thriller with solid performances all around.
There are occasional missteps mainly for me the suspension of disbeleif regarding the lack of authority on behalf of the law enforcers but thats really being pety.
This is a work of fiction that aims to be direct and succeeds.
Allthough not original(the idea of family revenge has been done ad nausem)Brothers is not super cgi quick cut slick in its action efforts nor does it attempt to be retro or way over the top.
The sequences of violence are very very beleivable and a real high water mark next to the performances.
Give Four Brothers a chance and you might find yourself pleasntly surprised.
Oh yeah note to Marky Mark stop with the pretend tears of grief you just dont have the chops to be that convincing.
Seriouslly I giggled every time he cryed in this movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Time is Now...., Nov 10 2005
Frank Black criminal investigator for the FBI has the ability to get inside some of the worst people on earths heads to see the acts they commit.
The Millenium group is a covert task froce trying to prevent the end of the world who enlist Frank as a member to further their cause.
Season 2 ended with a viral outbreak that left alot of people dead including Franks wife.
Frank beleives the group is responsible thus moving the storyline for season 3 at an incdebile speed.
This show had no equal and being that Chris Carters other show on fox at the time was such a huge hit they really let him and his crew run deep with Millenium.
Too bad it ended here but then again it did end strong so maybe it is all for the better.
Today you will find numerous shows on tv that possess the same ideas as Millenium did then but NONE of them have the heart or balls like this show did.
The addition of Emma Hollis as Franks partner here works way better than it has any right to.
Franks daughter Jordan is a natural.
The two seem like actual father and daughter.
The scripts and pacing and atmosphere are unlike anything on tv then or now.
This is top shelf viewing that never bows to mediocrity or wavers to soften the blows.
This show has teeth and bites hard.
I would like to see this on the big screen someday.
Worked for Twin Peaks and more recently Firefly why not Millenium?!?!
If you have never seen Millenium buy all 3 seasons turn out the lights and prepare yourself for a hell of a ride cause this show is as good as it gets...ever!

As a long standing devoted listener of metal for more than 1/2 my life now(im in my 30's)I can say that without a doubt my youth was spent stealing I mean err buying yeah thats it everything I could that had that ROADRUNNER R/C label on it.
RR has elected 4 captains from various bands & put them in charge of taking individual members from the labels roster past and present and literally mixing them all up in a stew.
The whos who list makes my head spin and ache however the end result is very impressive.
These songs sound fantastic and no matter what your taste or age range if you like this sort of music chances are youll enjoy this very much.
Make sure you buy the cd/dvd combo where you get over an hour of in studio performances.
Its worth it just to see King Diamond dressed like a regular dude.
Personally ive never seen him out of make up.
My jaw hit the floor when his name popped up on the screen.
Joey Jordison of Slipknot is also unmasked and very talented proving only that 9 members are too much the guy is playing down to his talent he needs to exit that band or fire some people.
This is a great piece of work and a really special way to celebrate RR's history.

Ive been a fan since the 1st cd but I lost intrest over time.
The reason being is that they began to sound too stiff and bloated.
I was really bummed when I heard they disbanded but this new incarnation sounds fresh and full of promise.
Transgression has some startling tracks(Echo of My Scream & New Millenium)but these songs are all solid and retain ff's roots.
Hooray for FF for being so fearless and still remaining a valid contender in the world of heavy music.

I bought tickets to Ozzfest 2004 souly for Priest reunited with Halford.
They were on top of their game.
Fantastic.
So naturally I was hyped up for this new material.
However Retribution shows not a single spark of the awesome fire I saw burning up on that stage.
Why?What went wrong?
They sounded better with Ripper.
I am sorry to be so harsh but this follow up to PainKiller makes Spinal Tap blush in embarassment.
I tryed to ignore it as I listened but once that last track kicks in forget it I was laughing so hard I could barely see the road or steer my car properly.
That song is called Lochness.
Its not a loose metaphor cleverly disguised as something else.
It is about the fabled legend through and through.
Think Stone Henge,Big Bottom or even St.Anger.
Apart from the outdated source material musically Priest sound bored going through the motions song after song.
It pains me to be so cruel to a band who has allways been really cool in the past even at their worst Priest allways had some redeeming quality somewhere.
Not here.Why??
To all you fans posting glowing reviews of positive energy towards this cd hats off and congrats cause its all for you.
I...guess?!?

I cant even begin to express how much of an impact this movie had on me.
Diaries is literal in every aspect it uses in this medium to tell the story of Che Guevara.
This is a film that should not be reviewed by anyone.
Instead Diaries should be found and discovered with a hunger for insight into history outside of textbooks and the regular medium selected for us by goverments whos only intrest lie only in their capital gain and global investments.
Amazing cinematography and score lend a subdued realism to the OUTSTANDING performances by the two antagonists.
Dont walk away from this film with nothing.
Find your own truth.

What is the distinction between Trail of Dead and say every other radio friendly alt rocker in circulation at this moment?!
I have been pondering this question for a week now and have wondered since I 1st bought their Madonna release years ago.
The answer is Trail of Dead have a pulse.
If youe enter Worlds Apart as a first time listener you might wrinkle your nose a little at how familuar it sounds but beleive me I am a hardened cynic and a harsh critic to boot these guys know how to write a tune to the highest degree.
Ive seen them live a few years ago and I think thats when my respect level for Trail of Dead sky rocketed because they not only played every song with breathless abandon but they also took each note to a whole new level without ever changing the song itself. It was very refreshing to hear and see something that good.
However they ended the show in a fit of violence which is a bit over the top but thats not the problem I have with it.
The problem is thats all people can talk about when mentioning Trail of Dead and thats a shame because there are alot of interesting things to discover both live and with each new release.
And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead.
