4.0 out of 5 stars unable to love and be loved, March 24 2016

This review is from: City of Night (Kindle Edition)
A stunning tour de force from 1963, City of Night is a progenitor of a subsequent flood of gay literature. I read it after Andrew Holleran's Dancer from the Dance, published 1983, which demonstrates a leap forward in gay life and self-consciousness. One takes another leap forward to Alan Hollinhurst's The Line of Beauty, winner of the 2004 Booker Prize despite its very explicit depiction of gay sexuality. Even that late, the novels portray gay men bumping up against each each other, unable to love and be loved. Born in 1943, I can testify to the emotional stunting and repression that led to the sad and hideous characterizations in City of Night. Hustlers (in Toronto) were the public face of queer life; other homosexual "lifestyles" were conducted behind closed doors with little change from Oscar Wilde's London. This autobiographical picaresque takes us from the narrator's abusive childhood to a hustler's odyssey through gay cruising venues. On a purely subjective basis I do not find prostitution and the sad sleazy parade of characters and situations entertaining. After plodding through the chapter called "The Professor," for example, I did a lot of skimming. Rechy spent five years refining this novel as he continued to hustle for a living, and the attention to literary detail is evident. He is a master prose stylist. Had he omitted some character encounters the book would be less a catalogue of his life and a more intense literary product. He states that it is a thinly veiled and character-augmented account.
This edition marks 50 years from first publication and has some very interesting materials at the back. There is a candid interview with Rechy about his life experiences and their relation to the novel. There are also several pages of publisher's proofs with his handwritten emendations, showing meticulous care.

Unfortunately, I am stuck between the (too) large and the (too) medium. Neither fits right. The medium could be correct except that the elastic is uncomfortably tight. I suggest you order one of each size to try them on (over a speedo, natch) for size.

5.0 out of 5 stars DETRITUS OF A 40 YEAR EXPERIMENT. (Also, See DDR ON U Tube.), Feb. 15 2016

One reviewer states that she would have liked to hear more from Frau Paul, separated for years by the Wall from her ailing son. But this observation highlights a point. Frau Paul and her tragic son are DDR detritus, washed up for good, like many other victims of the Stasi. There isn't much more Frau Paul could say. The successful MO of the DDR was to stunt every comrade, both victim and victimizer. In T.S. Eliot's phrase, they were all "living and partly living." Each kept his head down and played along with the farce in all its bizarre manifestations. At first I wondered if the author's first person introduction was going anywhere; by the end I understood how she had combined multifarious personal interviews and observations into a coherent tapistry/mosaic of life in the DDR.
I followed her leads to Utube to see the derivative rocker Klaus Renft and the ludicrous manufactured dance, the lipsistep, a would-be socialist alternative to western decadance. There are also various propaganda videos from the DDR plus, astonishingly, scenes of Ostalgie, parties and souvenir stands, post-1990, of DDR memorabilia. These have few hits, but must be seen to get a fuller picture of the DDR and its aftermath.
Frau Paul, her husband and son, give an extended interview on a U Tube series called "A History of the DDR", episode 1 (of 7) at approx. the 42 minute mark. This is a detailed series from c.2003 of narrative and personal experiences of many comrades of the DDR.

4.0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY THOROUGH, Jan. 29 2016

Five stars for a specialist or academic student. Three subjective stars for me as there was "too much information" for my generalist brain. The pagan section is especially taxing because the pagans had no central authority enforcing an orthodoxy. Every village/town/shrine had a different cult/spirit/god and Fox seemingly describes every one that inscriptions or writings suggest or document, adducing the qualifications of source, age, authenticity, credibility etc. etc. etc. Hence it is a long book and I confess to some speed reading. The Christian section illustrates the adage that the victors write history so that more is known about the continuing story ("a fable agreed upon") of the Catholic Church. Works of the various heretics are given as much space as their relics permit. The book ends abruptly at the year 500 A.D., having amply fulfilled its mandate. My Kindle edition had maps but no pictures.

My first mail from China. What a thrill. These little flashlights work great now I figured them out. That's the reason I shorted rating by one star. There was no insert telling me how to use or install a battery. Just got them and they work just fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Steak for dinner; waffles for breakfast., Nov. 28 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Useful and versatile. I literally used it to grill steaks for dinner and make waffles for breakfast. Absurdly, you need to buy the waffle plates separately. Changing from grill plates to waffle is a snap [ha ha] and also lets you put them in the dishwasher. Use silicone spatula to avoid scratching the effective non-stick surfaces. My only beef is that the top surface does not heat as much as the bottom and I have to flip steak or waffles to cook evenly. Compact in size and light-weight. Would make a great gift.

I thought this might make better waffles, but it really makes no difference. I want my waffles crispy, not tender.

This piece of junk broke the very first time I squeezed the handles. I hadn't even removed the attached cardboard. I returned it, following the vendor's protocol. The third party vendor promptly refunded both the item and the [high] postage.

This couldn't happen if Canada hadn't wimped out and abolished hanging people like Bernardo. "Hanging killers makes us no better than them." Really? Bernardo?

3.0 out of 5 stars NOT A RITE FIT FOR MY CHINESE CRESTED, Oct. 26 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This harness was sturdy enough and seemed well made. But it was not a rite fit for my Hairless Chinese Crested dog. Dogs' bodies vary so widely that I suggest anyone take their dog to a store and try any clothing item on them. After much searching I found her a "Martha Steward safari jacket" harness which gave her a good fit and has served us well.
