Poirot
Poirot
by Agatha Christie
Edition: Audio Cassette

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece among Christie's Best, May 15 2004
This review is from: Poirot (Audio Cassette)
I have listened to these BBC radio adaptations many times over the last 15 years and am always entertained by the quality of the stories, the actors, and the plots. "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" is simply a brilliant mystery, one of Agatha's best, with a dozen legitimate suspects and a most ironic ending. This mystery takes place in a village Hercule had retired to to raise "vegetables" and was having a devil of a time at it. But, murder followed Poirot to the country and he did his best to confound the police, the suspects, and even the murderer. "Murder on the Links" is also a wonderful mystery with several suspects and two corpses not one. By the time Poirot and Hastings travel to France in response to a summons from a rich man who was concerned about his safety, the man has been brutally murdered. Captain "Arthur" Hastings plays an active role in this mystery, falling for one of the suspects in a big way. The John Moffatt's portrayal of Hercule Poirot, the Belgian wonder, is always classic and is so in both of these stories. I stongly recommend these BBC radio shows to all Agatha Christie fans, especially those that enjoy Hercule Poirot.

4.0 out of 5 stars Typical Nero Wolfe Mystery, well written!, May 6 2004
This second adventure of Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin, while not as compelling as the first, is nonetheless an excellent mystery with a rather sly twist at the end. While the the chief suspect, Paul, was the victim of a prank so many years before, he is not a sympathetic character at all and appears to be very bitter through his mask of friendship towards all. Paul's wife also seems to have few good qualities and does, in fact, seem to have quite a bizarre personality. Stout's stories are all well written and contribute to fast paced adventures that usually end with one character very unhappy, in this case Paul appears to be both unamused and unimpressed by Nero Wolfe's solution of the case. I storngly recommend this story to all Nero Wolfe/Archie Goodwin stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rex , Nero and Archie at the beginning, also at their best, April 28 2004
This review is from: Fer-de-Lance (Audio Cassette)
The quality of Rex Stout's writing is unique in its blend of mystery and detective techiques whereas some mystery/detective authors use only one method. The stories of Nero Wolfe are entertaining, well written, and full of colorful, eccentric characters. This story is well written with the small details and descriptions fleshed out nicely. The story is about two murders, initially unconnected until Nero Wolfe sniffs out the truth. Read several of the Nero Wolfe stories and you will feel right at home in the Brownstone on 35th Street. Fer-De-Lance might be the first of the Nero Wolfe series, but it is a wonderful first book. The rotund Nero Wolfe does the thinking and Archie Goodwin does the 'legwork' with a sweet, sarcastic nature. I strongly recommend this story and many others in the Nero Wolfe series to all mystery and detective story lovers.

Sittaford Mystery
Sittaford Mystery

5.0 out of 5 stars Christie at her most Compelling!, April 23 2004
This review is from: Sittaford Mystery (Audio Cassette)
Having listened to this dramatization of Agatha Chistie's mystery many times over tha last 15 years, I always catch some different nuance each time or remember something small detail I had forgotten. The voices of the actors who perform the dramatization really bring their characters to life and make the mystery extremely engaging. The table turning is absolutely wild and adds significantly to the puzzle of Captain Trevelyan's death. The singlemindedness of Emily in the pursuit of the murderer makes the novel flow smoothly. Her 'use' of the reporter, Charles Enderby, was also a nice touch, especially for the time period it was written in, the 1930's. Inspector Narricott's voice was also well cast and very strong in his role investigating the murder. Also, the setting is excellent for a murder mystery setting, Dartmoor in the dead of winter. I recommend this BBC full cast dramatization to all Agatha Christie fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wodehouse in his usual brilliance!!!!, April 23 2004
I bought this DVD because of all the Jeeves and Wooster stories I have watched, read, and listened to over the last 18 years. These stories are as superbly written and acted as I expected they would be. P.G. Wodehouse had a way with words that is unsurpassed in the literary field of humor and the stories on these DVD's highlight Wodehouse's ability to entertain with words. The two lead actors are wonderful in their portrayal of Wodehouse's characters and the humor is priceless. Having seen both John Alderton and Pauline Collins on stage live and in this series, they are actors who can play a variety of roles effectively and with passion. I strongly recommend this DVD set to all fans of P.G. Wodehouse's style and humor.

5.0 out of 5 stars H.G. Wells Classic story is done Proud!!!!!, April 23 2004
I cannot say how faithful this movie is to the book, however it is an outstanding science fiction movie. The cinematic techniques available for this movie are not as garish as you might see today, but are nonetheless very effective in supporting the cracking screenplay. Rod Taylor's potrayal of Wells is spot on and deserving of special note. The sets are also exceptional with the period furniture and architecture very well done. It is a classic story well adapted to the screen. I recommend this movie to all true science fiction and Time travel fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful tale with a powerful hero!!!, April 22 2004
This review is from: Fifteen Streets, the (VHS Tape)
The version I saw of this story was on stage in the late 1980's in London at the Playhouse Theatre (I think) with Owen Teale in the lead role. It is a powerful story well written and acted just as well by the superb cast. I have remembered this show since I saw it on stage 15+ years ago and the mesmerizing performance Owen Teale gave. It highlights what the class system meant in England in the days gone by. I hope this show comes out on DVD as it would become a welcome addition to my collection of good drama. I strongly recommend this story to fans of good drama, stage or film.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Journey of a Lifetime for a Vietnam Vet!, Feb. 27 2004
This review is from: Up Country (Audio Cassette)
Having never read or listened to any of Nelson Demille's books, I bought the audio of this story. I cannot express my thanks enough to the author for this brilliant story of a Vietnam Vet 'forced' to relive his past in Vietnam. The character development of Paul Brenner throughout the story is excellent, as is the singlemindedness of both Susan and Colonel Mang. This story is a most fitting one for the generation of both those who were sent to Vietnam and those who didn't. Having been a member of that generation who was spared from going to Vietnam by serving in Europe during the last couple years of the war, I was very moved by Paul Brenner's journey throughout Vietnam and the vivid descriptions of life in post-war Vietnam some 30 years later. His visits to past battle fields and the 'chance' meeting with Col Mang were amazing. The manipulations by Brenner's superiors are a telling indictment of how greed and power cloud decision-making. Colonel Mang, in his own way, is a better man than most of the US Government string pullers in the story. I strongly recommend this book to everyone, but especially Vietnam Vets and the journalists who cover briefings by politicians and military officers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Interesting Dirk Pitt Adventure!!, Feb. 27 2004
This review is from: Valhalla Rising (Audio Cassette)
When you read fictitious adventure stories about heroes who survive hopeless situations, you have to occasionally suspend the realities as you know them. This is one of those books where it is necessary to just that. I have enjoyed listening to this book on tape several times and believe it is an above average effort in the Dirk Pitt series. The story does require some imagination to believe the events happened or could happen, but they are plausible for adventure fiction. The story of the Viking explorers was a very interesting aspect to the story, even if you don't believe in them as factual. The Nemo aspect of the story was also interesting and integral to the whole story. There was a lot of background to cover all of the story elements and that took some time to develop the plot, more time than many reviewers are willing to accept. The 'bad guys' were the least believable and least entertaining aspect of the book to me. The tying together of the various storylines was good, but not perfect. The end of the story made me want to find out what was in store for Dirk Pitt and his children next, and that ended up being a long wait. I would happily recommend this book to all fans of Clive Cussler and other adventure writers, as an entertaining read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Movie I can watch Over and Over!!!, Feb. 24 2004
This review is from: The Philadelphia Story (DVD)
Of the romantic comedy, screwball comedy and regular vanilla comedy, this movie ranks Number 1 in all three categories. The movie has three of the greatest actors/actresses in the history of motion pictures and they play off each other perfectly in this movie. The screenplay utilizes the haughtiness of Katherine Hepburn spot on early in the movie then goes on to show her all too human side later in the film. Jimmy Stewart is well deserving of the awards and acclaim he earned for the role of wisecracking tabloid writer with a talent for more than just sensational stories. Cary Grant does what he always does, plays the perfect foil to the female lead and does it so smoothly. The rest of the characters are well cast, as well, from Uncle Willie to Seth Lord to the social climbing George Kitteridge to Dinah, the precocious younger sister. It's an outstanding clean comedy that everyone should see over and over to catch all the little nuances and humor. If I could only see one movie, this would be the ONE. I heartily and enthusiatically recommend this movie to all movie buffs.
