4.0 out of 5 stars Recoil remixed singles, Nov. 11 2013

Although there are only 4 songs on this Maxi single, it is worth a listen, if you like dark and creepy. In true Recoil fashion, the tracks could be straight out of a thriller movie soundtrack. The original Drifting is already a fantastic track, but the Poison Dub mix is pretty spooky, as is Control Freak (Barry Adamson mix). The Shunt remix is pretty good, although I favour the original, personally. Vocals are perfect for the tracks, featuring Siobhan Lynch, Maggie Estep, and Douglas McCarthy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate 80's album, Nov. 11 2013

Depeche Mode at the peak of their game! This is a solid album from beginning to end. Never Let Me Down Again hooks you in Strangelove , I Want You Now, To Have and To Hold, and Behind the Wheel keep you riveted. Truly one of the best albums they made in the 1980's!

4.0 out of 5 stars Depeche Mode departure album, Nov. 11 2013

As a fan of the band line-up that included Alan Wilder, I bought this album with mixed feelings. It was professed by die-hard DM fans to be a really good album, but I was cautious. After listening, I found myself comparing it to Songs of Faith and Devotion, and trying to hear if it was very different to what Alan Wilder would have put his stamp on. The result? Yes, Ultra is a very good album. Martin Gore's songwriting was spot-on and Dave Gahan's voice stellar. The production does lack some layering and intricacy, but it is still good. The instrumental bits...Uselink and Jazz Thieves, were awkward. However, if you bought Ultra to listen to good Depeche Mode songs, this is a very good album. The standout songs for me were Barrel of a Gun, Useless, and Freestate.

A maxi single with 7 remixes on it, I think I got value. I love Alan Wilder's reworking of Faith Healer to begin with (Bloodline 1992), but the remixes are pretty cool. Given that this was all done in 1992, they sound as fresh as anything put out today. I have been replaying it to death. Recoil fans need this in their collection!

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the most epic of all Depeche Mode's releases!, Oct. 6 2013

My favorite album to date from DM, and I REALLY loved Violator. Considering this is the last album with the traditional lineup including Wilder, it is bittersweet to listen to. However the songs are powerful and moving, some of the best songwriting and production ever! I Feel You, The Mercy In You, Higher Love, are such temptation. The rest of the album is great too.

Given all the troubles the guys had going on individually, this album could very well never seen the light of day. So glad I got the collector's editon, as it was a revelation to watch the DVD about what went into this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars A collection of treasures, Aug. 24 2013
This review is from: Selected (Audio CD)
This album collects some of Alan Wilder's (ex Depeche Mode) favorite tracks from his project, Recoil. From "Strange Hours," reminiscent of Massive Attack, to blues inspired "The Killing Ground", and "Jezebel" and "Prey", to an eclectic mix of spoken word, ambient and alternative tracks. This album sums up What Recoil is all about so far. A good introduction to some of the best tracks, but you must listen to the albums that these tracks come off of. There is a treasure trove of goodies to be discovered!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you love atmosphere, you'll love this, Aug. 24 2013
This review is from: Subhuman (Audio CD)
The most recent album of new work from former Depeche Mode alum, Alan Wilder, this album is impossible to categorize. I takes the best of Alan's dark, atmospheric sound, and layers it with the textures of the guest vocalists voices. Edgy blues and alternative music at it's best. Alan himself has described his music as "filmic", as it does give one the feeling of a movie soundtrack, evoking a few different emotions. I can't stop listening to it! But if you're buying it thinking that you are going to hear DM type music, that's not what this is.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Origins of Gotye, April 30 2012

The debut release from Gotye, Boardface is darker and more experimental than his later albums. He uses guest female vocalists on a number of his tracks, which is refreshing, but for anyone expecting only his vocals, don't be too disappointed. Gotye has the elements that make him unique, but you can tell that his sound still has yet to mature. The hypnotic, layered tracks draw from a number of genres and almost have a movie soundtrack feel to them.

I haven't given it too many listens yet, but I'm sure it will become one of my favorites. If you even remotely like this album, 'Like Drawing Blood' and 'Making Mirrors' are must haves.

5.0 out of 5 stars You won't be able to stop listening, April 7 2012
This review is from: Making Mirrors (Audio CD)
This 'album' is worth a listen, and once you play it, you won't be able to stop. From beginning to end, you will hear such a diverse realm of music that it will be hard to believe that it all came from one artist! The title track, "Making Mirrors" is haunting, but mellow and sets the mood...like a dream, then the awakening, lively track "Easy Way Out". All the tracks weave a story that make you think about music in a whole different way. Certainly don't look for anything else similar to "Somebody That I Used To Know", because they are all unique.

This release romps through layers of sounds and vocals, samples and introspective lyrics that will leave you searching for MORE Gotye music.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you loved Making Mirrors..., April 4 2012

Gotye's eclectic mixture of pop, electronic, reggae, jazz, etc., will leave you breathless, but satisfied at the end of it. His heart-tugging 'Heart's a Mess' will leave you wanting to hear more of his 'desperate to connect' angst. His playful, yet true 'Thanks For Your Time' is just catchy and fun. The dark, obsessive "The Only Thing I Know" is stunning lyrically. All 11 songs on this CD are amazing works of art.

If you were captured by Wally de Backer's talent on Making Mirrors, you will indeed enjoy his earlier work, Like Drawing Blood.
