Friday Night Dinners
Friday Night Dinners
by Bonnie Stern
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Great recipes for real families, Jan. 26 2010
This review is from: Friday Night Dinners (Hardcover)
I love Bonnie Stern because her recipes are geared towards foods that regular families would normally eat, but dressed up a bit. This cookbook has a great mix of everyday type foods (apple cobblers, roasts, chicken) as well as some unusual ethnic options (lots of middle eastern and some indian and asian) so it represents the way a lot of people like to cook now, which is to bring in some new flavours to more standard dishes. I agree with Novice Cook in that this book is probably geared to more experienced cooks - but by no means are the recipes complicated. The wheat berry salad is to die for, and she also gives a great choice of easy baked desserts which you can make quickly and with on-hand ingredients. The book is organized by meal "theme" which is a bit different but it is still easy to find recipes by subject in the Index. A great book by a wonderful Canadian cook!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ina rocks!, Feb. 20 2007
After buying this book and trying many of the recipes, I can now say I am a total convert. As an avid home cook, I often try new recipes and have quite a collection of books and recipes sourced online. This has now become my "go-to" book for both weeknight meals as well as for more extravagant dinner parties. Her recipes are easy to follow, illustrated with beautiful photography (love that!), ingredients are easy to find, and the results are delicious. What more can you ask for? If you are looking for complicated, challenging restaurant-style recipes, this is not for you. However, if you are in the market for recipes that your family and friends will love (and that you will enjoy cooking) then buy this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book - kosher or not, Oct. 6 2006
This is a wonderful cookbook. I have made several recipes, from chicken to lasagna to desserts. I am not kosher but I find these recipes relevant to the way I cook and eat. The photos are fabulous, even convincing me to bake an apple galette - pastry dough had always scared me off, but no more. And the ingredients are easy enough to source, so it's good not only for entertaining but also for weeknights.
