Riveting medical issues and ethics from a Jewish perspective, July 17 2004
Whatever your perspective, this one makes for fascinating reading. From artificial insemination to euthanasia, all facets of medicine are explored, all with related Jewish references and guidelines. The author doesn't just investigate obvious issues such as abortion, suicide and how to treat terminally ill patients but also looks at more obscure areas - unconventional therapies, dental emergencies on the Sabath and whether marijuana is ethical in medical treatments (again, from a Jewish perspective). I guarantee you'll learn something new if you read this one!

RIveting and inspirational, July 15 2004
Grab this DVD as quickly as you can. Here's why: 1. It tells the true story of a woman, Jackie Kallen, who broke into the male-dominated boxing world. Very inspirational and Meg Ryan's performance is strong and solid. 2. There's an interview with the real Jackie Kallen and a behind the scenes look at how and why the movie was made. 3. The movie is gripping to watch and Kallen isn't portrayed as a stereotype or saint but as a very real (and flawed) person. In short, this isn't a "fluffy" movie but one that tries to be relatively honest (by Hollywood standards). Very riveting, great fight scenes, strong perfromances - what more is there to say?

This book provides invaluable info for individuals, business and organizations who want to protect themselves from identity theft. And if you happen to bu among those unlucky people whose identity has already been stolen, this book will help you recover (and quickly) from the damage. Easy to understand and yet detailed enough to cover all the bases - from emerging threats to ongoing scames. Also tells readers how to plan effective anti-theft policies and systems. Well worth your time!

Finally, a suspenseful movie for writers (or readers), July 1 2004
An erotic mystery featuring...a frigid, rather withdrawn writer? Yes, and what a sensual feast of a movie it is! Chalotte Rampling is back (and in fine form) as Sarah Morton, an uptight writer with a rather severe and forbidding personality. She's off to her editor's vacation home on holiday, ostensibly to work on her next book. Thats when hints of Alfred Hitchcock suspense and danger start to loam - and that is also when the movie begins to weave its inescapable spell, especially when a young woman arrives at the house. Don't want to give this one away, but do suggest you think about the act of writing and inspiration while viewing this one. Do that and you might not encounter the confusion that sidetracked some viewers from the fun of this one. Loved it, plan to watch it several more times to catch what I missed first time around.

A foreign film worth seeing, May 26 2004
Not for everyone, this is a blend of poetry, music and visuals, a breath-taking and beautiful movie. Very sensual, but not in an erotic way, the movie tells the story of a boy who experiences the world through sound and earns his living tuning musical instruments.

Think you'd NEVER stay with a cheating spouse? Read this one, May 19 2004
Farbman thought she'd go, too. But take a 30 year marriage, complete with kids and then consider that your husband has been cheating - and not once, but repeatedly, including one long-term affair, lasting years. Think you'd walk right out the door (or boot him out?) Read this book and you might reconsider your position, as Farbman reveals, in heartbreaking detail, what she went through and how she came out the other side. She doesn't hold anything back, from the first inklings of suspicion to the wrenching certainty that her husband had cheated on her. It is a soul-searing account of a hellish time, but one that is impossible to put down.

A film with integrity but a surprising lack of emotion, May 12 2004
The basic premise: two students go on a shooting spree at their local high school, leaving a trail of death behind them. Comparisons to Columbine are inevitable, of course. But what I found most disturbing about this movie were the unexplored questions. There is no evidence these boys are disturbed and few hints as to what might have caused them to become so unhinged. The movie seems almost mechanical and detached, filming everything in a documentary style but with no explication. Other flaws - a very slow build-up to the inevitable conclusion, no depth to the characters, a certain choppiness. Even so, I confess I was unable to turn away from the screen, knowing what was to happen..but I also wanted to have some hint as to WHY it happened.

The ONE decorating book I consider a MUST - here's why:, April 18 2004
This is the book I turn to time and time again since the information in this book is timeless, making it a true classic (a rarity in decorating books). Whether you want to know how how to create a focal point in a room, group your objects attractively on shelves or hang your pictures for maximum impact, this book provides all the info you need for success. There are also diagrams and photos for those who prefer pictures to print and much of the information, such as "Arthur's Magic Triangle" (a surefire formula for arranging objects of different sizes) can be used in any room, from kitchen to bedroom. He also has tips arranged by type of room. Once I got this one, I got rid of tons of my other books. Why keep them? This was the only one I really needed.

A must-see for fans of Trollope, April 7 2004
A classic story of a woman's efforts to remain a good wife while taking new risks. Anna Bouverie has spent the last 20 years of her life struggling to keep her family financially afloat, in spite of her husband's less than lavish salary in the parish. The last straw occurs when he is passed over for a promotion and Anna has to face the fact that she will have to take things into her own hands as well. But how does she do this without tipping the balance? Unfortunately, her efforts brings about the disapproval of those in the parish as well as the anger of her husband. Anna is forced to form a new identity for herself, not an easy task after all the time she's spent within the protection (and confines) of her marriage. A very believable look at the challenges faced by one woman trying to break out of her shell.

Wow! Great family fare and perfect for wordaholics, too!, Jan 29 2004
A film focusing on kids who are trying to make it to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. - doesn't exactly sound like anything exciting, does it? But when I took it out of the DVD case and put it in our player, my son walked into the room, sat down for a second and didn't move for the rest of the movie. He was more riveted by this film than most of the action movies and flicks aimed at kids..and I think I know why. This movie features real kids from various parts of the United States, all trying to become the winner of the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. They aren't practiced actors and yet (surprise, surprise) they are totally engaging. You can't help but root for them although you may find yourself (as my son and I did) with a particular favorite or two that you hope makes it to the winner's circle. The kids featured here come from all walks of life and quite different parts of the United States...and they all have various systems and techniques for learning their spelling words. Their parents run the range, too, from bemused to straightforward and disciplined. Who'd have thought this would make the stuff of high drama, excitment and suspense? Kudos to the filmmakers for figuring it out - and producing such a wonderful result! Special features:Information about what the students are doing now, an interactive Hangman game, info about the makers of the film, more.
