5.0 out of 5 stars Gary Busey brings Buddy Holly to life!, July 17 2004
I'm a huge fan of Gary Busey, who may not be a "star" but is nevertheless a great actor. This is by far his best performance, & I feel he deserved the best actor oscar more than Jon Voight (who won for Coming Home). Few people know that Busey was a musician before he was an actor, so in this awesome musical biography of Buddy Holly we get to see just how talented he is. The film is mostly factual, although some screen characters are actually composites of two or more people. The energy in Busey's performance is what makes this a winner. Not only did he sing, he did it while being filmed live! That's what gives this such a realistic look to it & it's why this stands out among the other musical biographies as one of the best. There was also a lot of unscripted dialogue that makes this even more entertaining. The best thing about the dvd is the hilarious & very informative commentary from the director Steve Rash & Gary Busey, which is almost as good as the film itself! This is an excellent tribute to a lengendary rock & roll icon & it won an oscar for best score adaptation. Do yourself a favor, add this great film to your collection!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cagney is bad to the bone!, July 17 2004
This review is from: Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye (VHS Tape)
I've always loved watching film noirs & of course I'm a huge James Cagney fan. I must confess that when I bought this the other day I'd never even heard of it. Along with White Heat, Cagney proved he was truly a screen villian to be feared. He had already established his reputation with his great gangster roles of the 30's, but never did he play a more evil character than in Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye. A comparison to Al Pacino's "Tony Montana" character in Scarface is not far off, believe me! Other reviewers have gone over the plot, so I won't waste your time. Without a doubt this is one of Cagney's finest performances, & no Cagney fan should be without this classic or White Heat, his only other film noir role.

5.0 out of 5 stars Next stop, "Paradise City"!, July 12 2004
This review is from: Set-Up, the 49 (DVD)
This is one of the best boxing films of all time & has some truly intense fight scenes that would impress any Raging Bull fan! It is also a terrific film noir with two of the genre's underappreciated icons: Robert Ryan & Audrey Totter. Robert Wise's skillful direction, especially of the lengthy fight scene is flawless. Robert Ryan stars as an over-the-hill boxer who's been on a losing streak & who desperately wants to win a match so that he & his wife (Audrey Totter) will have more money. But it's much more than that. He also wants to regain his pride & self-respect. His manager has made a deal with the opposing fighter's team that Ryan will take a dive in the 3rd round. There's just one problem: Ryan doesn't know about the "set-up". What happens next is one of the most realistic boxing scenes in the history of cinema! You see the bloodthirsty & crazed fans screaming as Ryan tries to survive against a much younger fighter who's overly confident because of the "fix". As the fight progresses Ryan's opponent realizes that Ryan has no plans of taking a dive & things get ugly. The camerawork during the fight is incredible: I felt like I was in the ring & found myself flinching as Ryan took some hard punches. Don't worry, I won't spoil the ending! The dvd has a superb picture quality & an interesting commentary by director Robert Wise & Martin Scorsese. Although the film is only 72 minutes I think it's truly a great masterpiece, & I also recommend these: Body & Soul, Champion, & Raging Bull.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pacino shines in courtroom satire, July 10 2004
Ever since watching the Godfather films I've been a huge Al Pacino fan. His amazing over-the-top performance in the courtroom scene at the end is what makes this unsympathetic look at our criminal justice system so memorable. However, I agree with other reviewers that the plot is slow at times & the movie wavers uncomfortably between comedy & drama. The humor is at times a little too forced & the disco music doesn't help. One of the things I really enjoyed was seeing the great Lee Strasberg play Pacino's grandfather. Remember Godfather Part 2 when Pacino had Strasberg "taken out"? I only wish they could've made more films together. The great cast also includes John Forsythe (who plays a TOTALLY unlikable villian), & Jack Warden, whose suicidal antics get annoying after a while. Of course, it's Pacino that makes this movie so entertaining & so watchable 25 years later. While it's no masterpiece I still highly recommend it to Al Pacino fans (& especially lawyers!).

5.0 out of 5 stars "Build my gallows high, baby!", July 8 2004
This review is from: Out of the Past (DVD)
This is without a doubt one of the best film noirs ever made, & with a very impressive cast. The director brilliantly cast Mitchum & Douglas as rivals & of course the beautiful yet deadly Jane Greer as the femme fatale. Mitchum is perfect as the private detective who loses control of his life after falling for Douglas' "girlfriend", played by Jane Greer. Douglas, although virtually unknown in Hollywood at the time of this film, also gives an incredible performance as a ruthless mobster determined to own Greer at all cost. I've seen dozens of film noirs but I can't think of one with as much snappy dialogue as this one. The screenwriter, Geoffrey Homes was truly gifted & made this film timeless. And of course, the talented Jacques Tourneur flawlessly directed this great classic & created one of the most memorable film noirs ever. The picture quality of the dvd is excellent & there's very informative commentary that helped me fully understand the complicated plot. This masterpiece is a must-have for any fan of film noirs. In fact, it'd be hard for anyone to not like this movie!

3.0 out of 5 stars Distorted history, bad script, yet still a guilty pleasure!, June 20 2004
I have a lot of respect for Mel Gibson & I feel he did the best he could in this flawed war movie. That being said, the dialogue is completely laughable at times & just plain stupid at others. When I first heard about this movie I rejoiced, thinking it'd be a factual (or at least partly) account of the famous "Swamp Fox" of the Rev. War, Francis Marion. His story would make an incredible movie, but the filmmakers decided to create their own version of Marion, who becomes Benjamin Martin. It goes down from there. Have you ever seen anything so unbelievably stupid as one crazed man & two boys wiping out a group of 20 British troops?!? And how about the mandatory bad guy gets killed by the hero at the end! Nothing like a bayonet through the throat to entertain an audience! I guess they were trying to achieve another "Braveheart", but they missed their mark completely. Being a history buff makes it easier to criticize movies like this, but I will say that it's pretty hard to not be entertained by the large-scale battle scenes, which are nicely done. I'll close by saying that as history, this fails drastically, but as pure entertainment it's not all that bad.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Garfield's best films is thankfully on dvd!, June 14 2004
This review is from: Force of Evil (DVD)
This was one of John Garfield's final films before he was wrongfully "blacklisted" & it's easy to see why it was a "major influence" on director Martin Scorsese's crime dramas. Garfield plays a wise young Wall Street lawyer who works for a mob boss in order to make money "the easy way". However, when Garfield forces his older (& weaker) brother to join the crooked organization, problems quickly arise, & there's plenty of backstabbing & double-crossing involved! I'll admit the movie starts off a little slow, but Garfield's incredible acting had me hooked in no time. The photography in this gripping film noir is simply amazing, & although Garfield's the only "big star" the cast is very good. Unfortunately, the dvd has absolutely no special features, not even a trailer or cast bios. Oh well, this classic is so awesome that I'm satisfied with the dvd release. Maybe someday a special edition will be released. If you're a John Garfield or film noir fan than this is a definite must!

4.0 out of 5 stars Plenty of swashbuckling action for cheap!, May 4 2004
This review is from: Legendary Pirate Movies (DVD)
I love a good swashbuckler classic, & you get a pretty good collection here for a very low price. Captain Kidd stars Charles Laughton in another great villanous role, & Randolph Scott, who was 46 at the time(!), as the man determined to bring him to justice. Considering it was made in 1945, the picture quality is pretty good. This is a fun classic for swashbuckler fans. The Son of Monte Cristo is definitely one of the corniest movies I've ever seen! Most of the dialogue is unintentionally hilarious, but it was very entertaining & makes the perfect movie for a rainy night! It stars Louis Hayward, George Sanders, Joan Bennett (who was in several great film noirs), & Clayton Moore (the Lone Ranger!). Long John Silver's Return to Treasure Island is the fun sequal to Treasure Island, & Robert Newton once again plays a pirate to perfection! The picture quality is below adverage, but the film itself is great. This is probably the most entertaining of the three films thanks to Newton's over-the-top performance that kept me laughing the whole way through! These aren't masterpieces, but they're great fun for the whole family & well-priced.

5.0 out of 5 stars Off-beat WW2 classic with all-star cast!, April 27 2004
This review is from: Kelly's Heroes (Widescreen) (DVD)
This is definitely one of the funniest war movies of all time! Donald Sutherland, who plays a hippie(!) tank commander, seems out of place in a WW2 setting. However, he had me laughing the whole way through! I can't imagine what this film would be like without his hysterical performance. One of my favorite scenes is when Sutherland's three Sherman tanks attack a Nazi railroad station while playing Hank Williams' music on a loud speaker! I realize that this "WW2 movie" has a definite 70's feel to it (especially with one of the hit songs of the decade, Burning Bridges), & some don't like this movie for that reason. I can't help but have fun everytime I see this! The tanks, even the German ones, look much more authentic than those in Patton or The Battle of the Bulge. This is a real treat for WW2 tank buffs like me who appreciate authenticity. I know the plot is hokey, but who cares? If you want to see a war movie that isn't depressing (like most) or boring then this is for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars A tough-as-nails WW2 classic!, April 27 2004
This review is from: The Dirty Dozen (Widescreen) (DVD)
Lee Marvin was just made for this role! Being a decorated WW2 vet he wasn't just acting in this classic! Add Charles Bronson, Telly Savalas, John Cassavetes, Donald Sutherland, & Clint Walker to the mix & you've got an "elite" group of psychos & killers that even would've scared [any dictator]! The movie is 2 1/2 hours but is never dull. There's great character development, plenty of humor, & big-time slaughter of [enemies] at the end! What more could you want from a war movie! For those who love WW2 behind-the-lines suspense, this is highly recommended.
