5.0 out of 5 stars A cowboy's must, May 19 2004
John Travolta, who became famous for his role of Vinnie Barbarino on the ABC sitcom "Welcome Back Kotter",had two prior megahit starring films,"Saturday Night Fever" and "Grease". In his third megahit, this film,he is Beauford Uan "Bud" Davis,an URBAN COWBOY who moves to Houston from Spur,a small Houston suburb. He lands a job at an oil refinery where his uncle Bob works. Debra Winger is Sissy, who Bud met at Gilley's,the real-life Pasadena,TX honky tonk. Bud and Sissy fall in love and get married at the hot nightspot. Scott Glenn is Wes Hightower,a paroled convict who steals Sissy's heart and keeps it while she and Bud are separated and nearly divorce. Madolyn Smith in her debut,at least on the big screen,is Pam who is Bud's girlfriend during the separation. Country singer Mickey Gilley owns the nightspot with Sherwood Cryer(both appear as themselves in the film). In addition to Gilley, country artists appearing in the film are Bonnie Raitt,Johnny Lee and The Charlie Daniels Band. All four artists have contributed to the soundtrack album. This film was directed by the late James Bridges, whose prior films include SEPTEMBER 30,1955 and THE CHINA SYNDROME. Bridges subsequently directed MIKE'S MURDER also starring Winger,PERFECT,also starring Travolta, and BRIGHT LIGHTS,BIG CITY starring Michael J. Fox. Sadly,Gilley's was burned down in 1989 by a kitchen fire and was later re-christened as Gilley's Mechanical Bull & Nightclub. Travolta would have no megahit films following this one until 1989's LOOK WHO'S TALKING. He won an Oscar for his role in 1994's PULP FICTION and is still going strong in Hollywood today.

5.0 out of 5 stars An update and revision of Records, May 17 2004
This review is from: Very Best ... & Beyond (Audio CD)
Since the 1982 release of the RECORDS compilation,Foreigner put out three studio albums of all original material. Ten years after RECORDS,this updated and revised compilation entitled THE VERY BEST AND BEYOND was released.featuring three original tracks,SOUL DOCTOR,WITH HEAVEN ON OUR SIDE and PRISONER OF YOUR LOVE. Foreigner debuted in 1977 with hits like COLD AS ICE,FEELS LIKE THE FIRST TIME and HOT BLOODED. 1978's DOUBLE VISION brought the title track. From 1981's FOUR(the band's fourth album),comes JUKE BOX HERO,WAITING FOR A GIRL LIKE YOU and URGENT. From 1984's AGENT PROVOCATEUR is I WANNA KNOW WHAT LOVE IS with a gospel choir and THAT WAS YESTERDAY. From 1979's HEAD GAMES is the title track,DIRTY WHITE BOY and REV ON THE RED LINE. All the other songs are good. The studio version of HOT BLOODED and the complete studio version of FEELS LIKE THE FIRST TIME is on this compilation. Great album!

5.0 out of 5 stars Live from Los Angeles,it's the Brothers Gibb, May 15 2004
This review is from: Here At Last Live (Audio CD)
Following the release of CHILDREN OF THE WORLD,the Bee Gees went on tour and recorded this album at the Forum in Los Angeles on December 20,1976. MAIN COURSE,COTW's predecessor was still a hot-selling album. This was the era of disco and those two albums are "jive-talkers". The songs from MC and COTW sound very much the same on this album except the tempo is a bit faster. They also deliver a variety of their Atco Records tunes(those originally recorded on that label) such as NEW YORK MINING DISASTER 1941,LONELY DAYS,HOW CAN YOU MEND A BROKEN HEART,TO LOVE SOMEBODY and a medley of others. Joining the band is their employed brass ensemble The Boneroo Horns who had worked on COTW. The brass band should have worked on this album's 1997 sequel ONE NIGHT ONLY. Many songs on this album also appeard on ONO. After this album, the Bee Gees would jumpstart their now-deceased brother Andy Gibb's short, but memorable career. Because this album was recorded on 12/20,the band wished their audience a Merry Christmas. A must for all Bee Gees fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Idiots DeLuxe!, May 13 2004
Here we see the Stooges in jail for suspicion of murder. Three beautiful women meet them and propose marriage. The Stooges are about to be executed but are freed after the real murderer(s) confessed. Moe is court, being tried for mayhem. Curly with Larry alongside him in the audience, shouts to the judge,"You mean murder!" Moe is acquitted and continues with the behavior that brought him into the courtroom. The Stooges even find a bonanza which is stolen money(the crooks buried it underground). The Stooges become artists and later go to war with wet clay! Also a beautiful girl named Nell promises to marry Curly,a newly appointed sheriff,if he saved her father's life and bring Blackie,an armed villain,to justice. In POP GOES THE EASEL,the artist film, the real-life daughters of Moe Howard and Larry Fine, then small children, appear in the scene where they play hopscotch and they both chuckle when their dads and Curly play. A must for all Three Stooges fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Three Stooges work hard, May 13 2004
Here we see the Stooges mistaken for newspaper reporters, who are actually drycleaners(an editor of another newspaper sees the right door of their van open, thus reading "Star Press"). The back of the van reads "Star Cleaning and Pressing Co." with both doors closed. The Stooges also are hired to appear in a jungle film. They also are in trouble with the law for taking pictures in a country when photography is illegal. They fish for their own fish to sell. They also are hired as construction workers and are immediately fired after poor structure(they begin on the 97th floor of a skyscraper!). Supporting cast members include Vernon Dent,Symona Boniface and Jane Hamilton. In BOOBY DUPES,the fish film, after the Stooges' boat sinks and they find another one astray, they're mistaken for Japanese enemies when Moe sways a large white rag with a red stain on it on a fishing pole. Thinking it's a Japanese flag, the pilot of the overhead helicopter drops bombs, near them if not on them. That film was made during the World War 2 era,as was CRASH GOES THE HASH,the newspaper film. A must for Three Stooges fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars A golf player's must!, May 13 2004
If you play golf, this film is for you. I'm sure Jack Nicklaus,Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods have all seen this film. Harold Ramis directs an all-star cast featuring Chevy Chase,Bill Murray,Brian Doyle Murray(Bill's brother),Rodney Dangerfield and the late Ted Knight. This film's fetured song is I'M ALRIGHT recorded by Kenny Loggins. This hit film, theatircally released in July 1980,spawned the sequel,CADDYSHACK 2 in 1988.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bill's in the army now!, May 12 2004
John Winger(Bill Murray) quits driving taxicabs and enlists in the army with his teacher roommate(Harold Ramis). They experience the typical army life, filled with commanders, guns and best of all, pretty girls. The late John Candy gives great moral support as one of the soldiers. The then-little-known Sean Young is one of the girls whom the guys meet while in the army. One of Murray's most memorable post-Saturday Night Live films. Murray and Ramis later filmed the two GHOSTBUSTERS movies and Ramis directed 1993's GROUNDHOG DAY,starring Murray and Andie MacDowell.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dire Straits' only megahit, May 12 2004
This review is from: Brothers in Arms (Audio CD)
Dire Straits had a big hit in 1979,SULTANS OF SWING. Their next big hit was MONEY FOR NOTHING,from this album with Sting, which he co-wrote with the band's frontman Mark Knopfler. Other hits from this album include SO FAR AWAY,WALK OF LIFE and the title track. Only SO FAR AWAY does not appear on the 1988 follow-up compilation MONEY FOR NOTHING. It should have since it was a Top 20 hit. YOUR LATEST TRICK has an excellent trumpet introduction. All the other songs are good.

4.0 out of 5 stars No rattling and humming from this one, May 12 2004
This review is from: Achtung Baby (Audio CD)
After experiencing abundant success with the previous two albums,THE JOSHUA TREE and RATTLE AND HUM,U2 didn't spawn many Top 10 hits from this album. Only ONE and MYSTERIOUS WAYS made it to the Top 10. This CD was released in the standard plastic jewel case and the cardboard gatefold case. In fact, since RATTLE AND HUM,U2 had no megahit albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent and zang soundtrack!, May 12 2004
This review is from: Wayne's World 2 (Audio CD)
This film did not gain as much attention as the predecessor when it was theatrically released in the winter of 1993-94. Like the soundtrack to the first film, there are previously released songs and new ones. The previously released songs are the Village People's YMCA,their 1978 hit, which was not listed on the album(the 13th and final track). Also there Norman Greenbaum's one-hit wonder from 1970,SPIRIT IN THE SKY,Joan Jett and the Blackhearts' 1981 hit,I LOVE ROCK AND ROLL,Bad Company's CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF YOUR LOVE and Golden Earring's RADAR LOVE. There are excellent covers of Superstar,a hit for the Carpenters, performed by Superfan, which is the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde and an unknown(at least to me) male vocalist. There also Robert Plant covering the 60's hit LOUIE LOUIE,written by the late Richard Berry. There are live versions of Aerosmith's DUDE(LOOKS LIKE A LADY) and SHUT UP AND DANCE. Aerosmith appeared in the film performing those songs, actually on tour at the time of filming, promoting their GET A GRIP album. Other excellent performances by 4 Non Blondes and the Edgar Winter Group.
