4.0 out of 5 stars The lighter side of a heavy band., May 30 2004
This review is from: Unplugged (Audio CD)
To me, the softer side of "Alice In Chains" is just as impressive as their metal/grunge side is, and if you enjoy their "Sap/Jar Of Flies" ep's, this is something you want to have. It's similar to "Nirvana's" unplugged album, but with that added "A.I.C." spookiness of course. Great song selection too. "Nutshell" is a perfect opener, and one of my favorite songs of theirs. Other tracks that work well here are "Down In A Hole", "Brother", "Rooster", and "Over Now". Plus it ends with the great "Killer Is Me". Overall, I think this is just as essential as "Nothing Safe" or "Dirt". Now I ask the question, where's that "Pearl Jam" unplugged?

This is pretty much what any fan of the show or David Lynch needs to start with. It's the original movie/pilot, and is a great piece of work. The story, the characters, and the whole northwest environment really make for an interesting and sometimes creepy watch. Many cool actors showed up in "Twin Peaks", among them Kyle McLachlan, Lara Flynn-Boyle, Sheryl Lee, Jack Nance, and the sexy Sherilyn Fenn. If you enjoy this, seek out the VHS collectors series, episodes 1-7. Or the DVD first season, which is also episodes 1-7, minus this pilot.

3.0 out of 5 stars I like it!, May 30 2004
This review is from: Gold Afternoon Fix (Audio CD)
This album seems to get put down alot, but I think that's only because it followed the huge "Starfish" album, and often got compared to that. Taken on it's own, it's a typical, yet really good "Church" album. "Metropolis" and "You're Still Beautiful" were the two almost hits, but I enjoy some of the others just as much. The tracks "City", "Laughing", and "Grind" are all excellent, and are some of my favorite songs of theirs. One word of warning, the vinyl of "Gold Afternoon Fix" drops a couple tracks, but the cassette and cd include them all. Newcomers might just want the "Best Of" or "Starfish", but all fans should check this one out.

4.0 out of 5 stars I can finally put my old VHS tapes away., May 29 2004
Yes this is only 8 episodes, and yes it's overpriced, but when a show the caliber of "Northern Exposure" comes out on DVD, you've got to cough up the cash. In a world with so much "reality" tv, it's nice to see all these unique characters interact in an environment that's probably closer to our own reality, or what some of us wish it was. Obviously this is great to see again, and it will take you right back to watching it the first time. The extras aren't too amazing, but between the deleted scenes, the outtakes, and the original episodes, you've got more than 6 hours of viewing. By the time it's over, you'll feel like you've been sitting in "The Brick".

3.0 out of 5 stars So good you may "Soil" yourself., May 29 2004
This review is from: System Of A Down (Audio CD)
I'm not their biggest fan, but this is a pretty good album. They mix the politics of "Rage Against The Machine", with a sound that's just as aggressive. The singer also has a unique style, and great range, where one moment he's a screaming maniac, and the next he sings a soft melody. Though it's not the best thing I've ever heard, if you're into the band at all, or the nu-metal scene, this debut of theirs is a must.

4.0 out of 5 stars More sweet than bitter., May 29 2004

It's hard to say if this is their best album, but it's definitely their most popular. It contains "Broken Hearted Savior", "It's Alright", and "Bittersweet", which are three of their best songs, and any radio listener should know them. The rest of the album is almost as good, and I really enjoy the tracks "Turn The Light Out" and "Circle" nearly as much as the others. Overall it's a really great disc, and should please fans of both pop-rock, and alt-country just the same.

4.0 out of 5 stars Partially great., May 26 2004
This review is from: Daylight Again (Audio CD)
"Crosby Stills and Nash" have made better albums, but this early 80's release has some excellent songs on it. Everything here is decent, but it's side one (vinyl), that makes this a must to own. The best of the first five tracks of course are "Wasted On The Way", and the classic "Southern Cross". Those two songs are worth this alone. These guys have made some killer music over the years, with and without Neil Young, but if I kept one album other than the "So Far" collection, it would be "Daylight Again". The two disc "Carry On" set is a good overview too. I look forward to seeing them this summer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could have been better., May 16 2004
This review is from: Chronicles (Audio CD)
"Chronicles" isn't really a "Best Of", or a "Greatest Hits", but more of a sampling of his best songs. It does include "While You See A Chance", "Valerie", and "Higher Love", but at just 10 tracks, it's missing way too much, and should have another 6-8 hits. Even from just his late 80's albums, where's "Finer Things", "Freedom Overspill", "Back In The High Life Again", "Holding On", "Roll With It", and the excellent "Don't You Know What The Night Can Do?". Still, this is pretty good, and will have to do until we get an "Essential Winwood" collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars "You are my density"., May 12 2004
This is a decent soundtrack overall, but nothing too impressive. The best tracks I think are the "Huey Lewis And The News" songs. The last two songs are good ones from the film as well, however the rest of them seem to be filler. I also like the two "Back To The Future" tracks, but think they should have opened and closed the album, instead of being randomly stuck among the other songs. This is something good to own if it's one of your favorite movies, otherwise I'd leave "Back To The Future" in the past.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some of her best., May 9 2004
Overall this is a pretty good collection from "Bonnie Raitt". It's missing a few tracks of course, but most of the good stuff is here. The first 4 songs are off her huge "Nick Of Time" album, and are some of her best known. Plus this also includes "Something To Talk About" and "I Can't Make You Love Me", which is one of my favorites, as well as many other great, but lesser known songs. I really wish this also had "Cry On My Shoulder", but with 18 tracks it's hard to complain. This should please most casual fans of this redhead, and of soft rock/blues.
