Catfish Cafe
Catfish Cafe
by Earl Emerson
Edition: Mass Market Paperback
Price: CDN$ 9.89

2.0 out of 5 stars Boring., April 16 2004
This is the first book I have read by Emerson. Although it's a small book, it was a difficult read. The writing was a bit stale and uninteresting. There's not a lot going on in this book besides rather straight and to-the-point storytelling. There were a lot of characters--too many to keep track of--suffering from under-development.
In some parts of the novel, I found it difficult to track who was saying what because the thoughts and/or actions of one character were contained in the same paragraph as the dialogue of another character. A small complaint, maybe. But when carried on over a few pages, this style of dialogue writing is unnecessarily confusing and cramps the novel's flow.
I may read another Emerson book, to give him a fair "shake", but it will be much lower on my reading list.

3.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read., April 16 2004
What I liked most about this book was its creation and description of a world beneath the streets of New York City. Central to the plot is a community of New York City homeless folks, who, despite being long discarded by society, have a compelling existence, an intricate network of relationships, and a hierarchy. Quite interesting and affecting.
A good read, especially if you're a fan of Saul.

1.0 out of 5 stars What happened to the magic, Dave?, Jan. 22 2004
This review is from: Saxophonic (Audio CD)
Wow! I am a fan of Dave Koz, and have 4 of his albums. He is one of my favorite musicians because he writes or co-writes most of his material and his music is filled with emotion (mostly joy) and wonder.
This cd, however, seems mechanical as if Dave was just "fulfilling" his recording contract. For example, all of the songs in the "Act I" have no discernable melody and sound like Dave is just playing random notes on the sax while canned "muzac" plays in the background. Most of the cd is sterile, unimaginative, and devoid of emotion, and sounds way too polished--as if the band phoned in their performances from distant locations.
Buy "The Dance" or "Off The Beaten Path", or either of his excellent holiday cds instead and experience the magic that is Dave.

4.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful film., Nov. 8 2003
This cinematography in this film is remarkable. The plot, however, is a bit weak. The absence of Ms. Foster affects the film in obvious ways. On the whole, the film works despite its flaws.
Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intense psychological horror!, Nov. 8 2003
This movie is an intense study of a serial killer and the methods used by the FBI to track him. Expert direction, acting, and story make this a superb film.
Very highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much better than "Manhunter"!, Nov. 8 2003
Much more watchable than "Manhunter". This film has style, is well-acted, and doesn't feel so "1980's", unlike "Manhunter". Plus, it features Sir Anthony doing his thing as Hannibal.
Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Compelling film from Carpenter., Nov. 8 2003
This film starts off wonderfully. Great music, great cinematography, and some good dialogue lead the viewer to believe it'll be a great film. The film's plot suffers, however, when it's revealed that James Woods' character is an a**hole. That really soured the whole film.
