Smart Couples Finish Rich: 9 Steps to Creating a Rich Future for You and Your Partner
Smart Couples Finish Rich: 9 Steps to Creating a Rich Future for You and Your Partner
by David Bach
Edition: Paperback
143 used & new from CDN$ 0.01

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent resource, July 13 2004
_____This book is great to have if you are a novice to the world of personal finance. The text is geared toward married couples, but that doesn't mean a single person cannot read it and learn a lot from it (i.e. the advice generally applies to either singles or couples, with some extra information for couples).

_____The information contained is truly minimal when you compare it to many other books on the shelves. But for a novice I think that is good - Bach himself stresses that the information is meant to present to the reader the aspects of personal finance, while providing links to sources for more detailed information.

_____While I agree that pretty much all of the information contained can be found for free on the internet, the value of this book is in the fact that it contains brief synopses of that information, all gathered into one place, with the added bonus of providing a purpose for all the different aspects of personal finance. Not just "what" and "where," but also "how" and "why."

1.0 out of 5 stars Typical Hollywood shock movie w/ no redeeming qualities, Feb 15 2002
_____I saw this movie before, when it was called "Point Break." Cop infiltrates a clique to find criminals, only to find that they are "nice, honest people who are just looking for the best in life." Only this time the cop has to master an import racer instead of a surfboard. Cop falls in love with girl who is part of this clique, then discovers that yep, these are the guys I'm looking for!

_____The cliche of characters only enhances the cliche of this movie. Vin Diesel: bad-boy leader who has a puppy-dog heart, loved his daddy, and races for the thrill. His girl is the typical silent beauty, good with cars but for some reason always has perfect hair and skin. Add to this the troubled youth who is a wizard when it comes to cars, but can't diagram a sentence.

_____I won't spoil the ending, but if you have seen Point Break, then it is already spoiled for you. Please pass on this movie.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good movie, great for Vaughn/Favreau fans, Feb 15 2002
_____Of course, everyone who sees this movie has to relate it to Swingers. And yes, Vince Vaughn is so annoying that you will want to throw a steel chair into your RPTV just to shut him up. But the movie is really more than that, with subtle character development and very dark comedy.

_____The first 15 minutes really speak volumes about the two main characters. Favreau, character, Bobby, is a nice guy and a hard worker, but just can't cut the mustard when it comes to doing something well. And Vaughn's character, Ricky, is an incredible screw-up who can't take anything seriously.

_____Throughout the movie, the inherent flaws of both characters are meant to make you slap your forehead in disgust. Why is Ricky so darn annoying?! And why can't Bobby say the right thing to shut him up?

_____The movie was filmed in the same style as Swingers, with that low-budget anti-hollywood indie look. Very nice.

_____If you rent this movie, try to look past Vaughn's annoying method of acting, and pay attention to the little things that help characterization and plot development. You will find that the movie is funny and appealing.

_____Of course, if you are a big fan of this duo, then you can't miss this movie. It is "classic" Vaughn at his annoying best!

3.0 out of 5 stars The evolution of No Doubt, take it or leave it, Feb 13 2002
This review is from: Rock Steady (Audio CD)
_____No Doubt is one of my favorite bands, not just because of their music, but because of their originality. You cannot classify No DOubt as any particular genre like ska or punk or pop or whatever. They are really their own genre.

_____So with Rock Steady, they have pushed the barriers of their own genre by branching off and including styles from other types of music, mosst prominently dancehall reggae. Result: really good sound, and lots of theat token originality.

_____Unfortunately, I am an old school No Doubter, and I have not taken well to the changes in style. I applaud their constant evolution, but the new style is just not me. It seems geared more toward the younger crowd (I am 10 years out of high school). I find myself listening to "Total Hate" more often than "Hey Baby." Maybe it is because I am not a big fan of hip-hop anymore. Whatever. Listen to the samples, and decide if it's for you before you buy.

The Onion's Finest News Reporting, Volume 1

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Onion veterans as well as newbies!, Jan 9 2002
_____ Sure the book contains a lot of the articles already online at the Onion archive, but what makes this book a must-have is the fact that it contains articles that have NOT been archived. Where else can you read them but in this book?! I flipped through the book when I got it and pointed out many of the articles as "have reads" but there were still a lot that were new to me.

_____ And seriously, reading on paper beats the heck out of online reading anyday. With this I can read The Onion at the dinner table, on the couch, in bed, and . . . well use your imagination :-) If you like The Onion, you must get this book.

Iron Chef
Iron Chef
by Television Fuji
Edition: Hardcover

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book for reference and exclusive info, July 29 2001
This review is from: Iron Chef (Hardcover)
_____Not bad for the only IC book out there. Contains a listing of all battles up until the New York Battle (predates the Morimoto/Flay rematch and 2001 battle). The listing does not reveal winners, so you won't be spoiled. Also has personal accounts from all Chefs, cast members, most frequent judges, and production staff. I feel that these are the best parts of the book.

_____There is also a recipe list as well as Hattori's picks for the best dishes in a few particular genres, like Italian, French, etc. These sections in my opinion are filler, they are frankly boring to read.

_____Also, there is a section on some memorable IC challengers, as well as restaurant info for both IC's and challengers.

_____The book is not lengthy for reading, as much of it is taken up by the list of battles, Iron Chef statistics pages, and pictures, pictures, pictures. Gotta love pictures.

Edition: Paperback
Price: CDN$ 17.29

5.0 out of 5 stars The PERFECT reference guide for grilling, July 6 2001
_____The book's greatest feature is its completeness. Raichlen covers all aspects of grilling:

1: Types of grills - Raichlen discusses the basics on gas grills, charcoal grills, hibachis, tuscan grills, smokers, you name it.

2: How to set everything up - I learned how to probperly light coals, clean and oil the grate, and test for proper temperature.

3: Recipes! - From steak to ribs to chicken, and even lobster and vegetables, Raichlen provides detailed instructions on how to cook just about anything on the grill. Plus, he even has quite a few recipes for rubs and sauces.

4: Everything else - Essential accessories, tips, and how to be a flamboyant griller can be found here.

_____In addition, the book is easy to read and logically outlined; you won't need to flip through trying to find specific information - you can find it easily once you know the layout.

_____I thought I was already an expert griller, but this book taught me A LOT of stuff, stuff that every griller should know. BUY IT!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Best animation ever, but too hard to follow, May 2 2001
This review is from: Ghost in the Shell (VHS Tape)
I couldn't finish this movie. It was just waaay too deep in technobabble. The animation is second-to-none, and the voice acting is superb, but that's about it. The story is impossible to follow or understand, especially if you are reading subtitles. This movie is only for the hard-core techno-proficient anime fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is top-notch anime, May 2 2001
This review is from: Ninja Scroll (VHS Tape)
_____If you are looking for anime the way it was intented to be, then buy this film. It's got everything you want: beautiful animation, engrossing story, great character development, cool villains, lots of fighting (well-animated fighting, not that Dragonball Z crap), and blood blood blood. It is also a nice departure from the mecha anime that dominates anime (not that I don't like it! :)

No Title Available

4.0 out of 5 stars Subtitles different from orig. release, but still good, May 2 2001
_____I used to watch this movie over and over again when I was in high school. I'm glad it's been re-released, but one problem I have is that the subtitles are different from the original in many places. That kind of bothers me, because it really takes away from the feeling of a classic anime, at least for an old schooler like me. Still, the movie is great if you like old anime; be sure to pick up Gunbuster, Dangaioh and Akira while you're at it.
