What was the point! This is garbage. I am appalled the fact Denzel Washington won academy award for this film. I know there were other movies that he had a role, should have earned him at least two academy awards. I can't even figure out what was the story. I understand, by the perspective, Denzel is the corrupt one here, and Hawke is acting Serpico. Is Serpico good enough only to be shown? Guess not. I hated this film, not because of the story, but because the stupidity the movie represented. I couldn't even believe how too-hyped-up this film was. Denzel is the bad wolf, Hawke becomes the good wolf, the good wolf prevails, and I am lost....somewhere in this rubbish story....I don't know what the hell the movie was trying to say. One part in the film, with the Spanish gangsters, left me all confused and had me .. off that the confrontation lead to nowhere but one stupid, simple fact that Ethan got tipped off about the Russians. I mean, come on! This is a terrible film!

Good film. It was slow and incomplete at times. The story, in large sense, was inaccurate. Beautiful film. That was the sole aspect why the film was good. Acting was very much top-notch. But, it didn't help to bring the flow of the story of Bonnie and Clyde. It got awkward at times. Sometimes, it got boring along the process.

I found this movie enjoyable, if unrealistic. Finest performance goes to Morgan Freeman with Alan Rickman behind him. Alan Rickman was unusually funny at times as he did well at portraying Sheriff of Nottingham. Kevin Costner is fair. Christain Slater is not bad at all. The film is kinda weak. I am not sure how to point where. But, at least it is better than the [movies] we have now made using over-abundance of special effects and lame stories. I thought this story was fair, considering the fact its nowhere identical to the real Robin Hood story. Worth watching. This one is not memorable enough.

I am a proud owner of this film. I am proud I saw this film about 7 times now so far. This is a great entertainment. You got two great looking guys, who happen to be villians, but you would want to say "Yeah, so what?". Paul Newman shined like sun with his beautiful blue eyes. Robert Redford, so quick and terse, makes you feel going like "Wow!". I'll bet by the end of the film, you will say you want to be like Sundance Kid, going on how impressive you can draw as fast as Sundance Kid. Excellent Documentary in the end of the film, outlining the points of the film, especially the use of gun-play to keep it real, esp. the loading of the gun. Very sad note that George Roy Hill died last December. This is a remarkable job George Roy Hill have done, gracing the art of filmmaking. You can see it through the use of camera, motion, and colors. This is actually one the finest and most enjoyable western films I have ever seen, easily proclaiming this film to be one of the great arts. There are many sequences in this film I always think about such as one part when the card player goes 'Hey kid how just good are you?" Bang bang bang bang!, the bicycle ride singing raindrops falling' by Burt Bacharach, the fear on their eyes going "who are these guys?", and finally, never to omit, the great ending that will stand the test of time as being the most sublime way to die. I will tell you again...watch this film, I will guarantee you that you will fall in love with this film.

Absolutely beautiful picture. Very uplifting acting by Morgan Freeman. Actually, to tell you the truth, Morgan's role as Joe Clark should have been on the AFI Top 50 heroes. Oh well...politics through AFI have left me angry. Also, my observation is that Morgan should have been nominated for Academy Award for best actor. He can't win it because he can't defeat Daniel Day Lewis's work in My Left Foot, no way or how. Morgan also in the film achieved a breakthrough and had himself lept to stardom through better and more powerful films such as Driving Miss Daisy and Shawshank Redemption. There is no denying the fact that Morgan Freeman has claimed himself as one of the most great African American actors ever to appear on a silver screen. This movie is definitely a Rocky type movie, ironically made by John G Avildson who also made Rocky. Well done and high praise for allowing this movie to be produced and show others that people can change, no matter how hopeless the situation looks.

Okay film. [...]Anyway, back to the movie...I was harsh on George Clooney when he had an ill performance in Batman and Robin. Since He made Out of Sight, Perfect Storm, From Dawn to Dusk, and Ocean's Eleven, George Clooney did what Will Smith could never do, the transformation of a tv star into a movie star. I hope he will choose more roles to help him to reach his potential, since I believe he will hit it big with the right roles. Other than that, Jennifer Lopez, as usual, is resplendent but wears off quickly since she only has the beauty of a face and body. If the audience was more than be fascinated about the chemistry between the two couple, the movie is basically flat. A gap here and there comes up. For example, [...] involve Michael Keaton in the movie since his role had absolutely nothing to do with the story, somewhat yeah contributes to the story but basically in a pointless way. Almost an all star cast here. Soderbergh's reason why he won the best picture for Traffic is because his style improved every film he did. From Sex, Lies, and Videotapes to Out of Sight to The Limey to Traffic, you can see how he experimented the style, what works and what doesn't work. This is an absolutely remarkable observation, granting the fact that he is a perfectionist. I absolutely love Soderberg's style in the film, but it seemed very young of maturity. [...]That is why I have this film a 6 because it looked great with a flat story. Samuel Jackson's cameo elevated the movie. Without that, there is no good ending for this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ripping Performance, Aug 30 2002
This review is from: From Hell (VHS Tape)
It is interesting to notice that two black directors made a movie involving all-white cast in this film. I think that was a remarkable achievement. Anyway, I liked the film because it was suspenseful and gripping. The artwork, the scenery, and the view of London were dynamic. The artistic creation team deserves a look for the Academy Awards. Johnny Depp is notorious for selecting dark movies, and this was a fine definition of his work. He gave a bold performance as Inspector Abberline. Heather Graham was great in Boogie Nights, but this time, she lacks. I think the role was kinda wrong for her. I think that how the movie used up the flashback/dream sequences while jack the Ripper came to slaughter were cool, better done than it was in Natural Born Killers. I believe I need to see this movie again to give a better review, giving more thought about it. Two things I can say...first, the movie is very good. Secondly, a Johnny Depp movie is well worth renting because he never fails to please the audience.

4.0 out of 5 stars Super great Thriller, and Sooooo underrated, Aug 29 2002
This review is from: Stir of Echoes [Import] (VHS Tape)
I must admit that I have never heard of Stir of Echoes until I bought it in the year of 2002. I liked the front cover of the movie. When I saw it, I thought it was unbelievably great. I liked Kevin Bacon's performance in this film. He certainly gave a great serious work on his part to really make this movie connect with the audience. I liked the story even though I didn't like the idea of a child actor being in it because they are not very good and natural enough. I will let this slide because the story really dominated the movie. I was puzzled about few characters, how they acted in the middle of the film, but I know now because the ending revealed it all. I saw The Mothman Prophecies before I saw this one. After seeing The Mothman Prophecies, the movie raised the standards higher than it was originally with M. Night Shyamalan films and the others. I feel this movie Stir of Echoes comes close to meet the new standards I have a high praise for the dynamic story created. Just for the record, Artisan, as I predict, will be the upcoming top producer of great movies in the future because what I have seen so far are extremely remarkable: Stir of Echoes, Pi, Belly, The Limey, The Ninth Gate, Dune, and many more. In addition, I researched on this film and did not know that it was released the same time as Sixth Sense. Now, that explains why this movie was in the closet. Suppose if this film was released only, I can safely say that this film will fare greater than it was in the first place.

1.0 out of 5 stars Utterly Terrible, Aug 27 2002
This review is from: Crooklyn (VHS Tape)
This is one of the downright worst films I have ever saw, close to Waterboy, Vertical Limit, and The Legend of Bagger Vance. The actors in this movie are horrible. I find this movie unbearable and difficult to watch in one seating, continuing to squirm around. I stopped this video at least 15 times, making promises to myself to watch it at a time for 10 to 15 minutes each. The story is god-awful, and this movie has hit the bottom point based on moral values, especially on the perspective of how a ghetto Black family lives. The girl Troy makes me sick to my stomach. How they beat the white neighbor with glasses makes me to say that Spike Lee should be ashamed of himself displaying this kind of mockery. This is movie is an obvious revelation that Spike lee is a racist. I am not a racist, but this kind of scene is giving a message that white people, especially the ugly ones, deserve to be beaten up and made mockery out of. Wake up Spike lee...this is not the 1960's when you can be Malcolm X of the African-American generation in the late 20th and the early 21st century. Spike Lee had no justification to provoke the old anger of Malcolm X through film making. What I don't understand is why Troy (the leading black sister) is so special and still hurts the society and getting away with it. One of the worst line I have heard through the film was, "I hope we don't have to dress up for mommy's funeral." I am speechless as it seems like, the children of the family do not really care about the mother's passing. I don't even appreciate the boy with glasses beating up his siblings and be allowed to have total freedom to choose basketball over anything more important. The mother made me sick to my stomach also. The portrayal of her as a role model is nonexistent. Finally thing to say, when the movie nearly ends and the mother dies, I am calling as an act of disrespect made by Spike Lee in reference to making the movie a "worthy-audience-gripping-to-feeling-sad-for-them" change of tide. I am telling you, this is an absolute one of the worst and racist film I have ever seen, and I have no respect for Spike Lee's work still even though I have seen X, He Got Game, Do the Right Thing, etc.. The most important African American film maker of the decade or even the century? Please...spare me the humor.

Penguin Classics Life And Adventures Of Robinson Crusoe
Penguin Classics Life And Adventures Of Robinson Crusoe
by Daniel Defoe
Edition: Hardcover
10 used & new from CDN$ 0.01

3.0 out of 5 stars Defined as a classic but not a great classic, Aug 25 2002
Robinson Crusoe is an enjoyable story. I thought it was a nice plot. Also, Daniel Defoe spoke of survival skills and how Robinson applied the techniques as means necessary for his survival. There was no analyzation of Robinson at least on psychological levels. I can see that he examined himself religiously. That really slowed the book down and became boring in the process. Also, the plot was not strong as the author had too many focuses: the home, the Brazils, the Shipwreck, the wolves incident, the aftermath, etc.. I prefer the introduction and the solitude on an island for the story. The wolves incident completely threw the book out of track. I will call it a nice classic story with a lot of flaws in its novel. It also skims a lot in the novel, not providing a lot of concrete details. When years went by, it didn't really focus on the years, but what happened that seems to happen the same too often. I felt there should be some kind of change annually. One thing I must point out is: How did Robinson took care of himself in regards to the excretion system? How did he go on to take care of the excretion matter?

P.S. I recently visited the new spy museum in Washington D.C.. By coincidence, I was also reading Robinson Crusoe at the same time. I happen to notice the fact that Daniel Defoe was a British spy and was credited being the first to set up the spy espionage network in all of Britain.
