5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Hip Hop at it's best, Feb 20 2004
This review is from: Enter the Wu-Tang (Audio CD)
First of all, production quality is not what makes this album such a classic. Please let me note that. It sounds a bit like it was recorded in a tin can, but as I said, that is not why this is a classic.

The "odd" beats, strings and uses of samples not ever attempted in hip hop before are part of what makes this album great, but the lyrics are fantastic as well. All 9 members of the Clan (Rza, Gza, Ol Dirty Bastard, Masta Killa, Inspectah Deck, U-God Ghostface Killa, Raekwon and the Method Man) sound HUNGRY on this album. They tell grimy street tales with a mix of slang and intelligence that has been hard to compare to since.

This is still the best album from the Wu Tang, even if the production is not as slick or refined as the new projects are. To some extent, I think it almost made this album better. Rza's beat work on this solidified him as one of the big names in the Rap game and it wasn't long after this album that the Wu spawned 10's of Solo albums for almost all 9 of the original members, as well as helped push the careers of Cappadonna, Shyheim, Streetlife, Remedy and Killah Priest among others.

This is where it all started, and this is still the best album from the Wu Camp, so if you're thinking about buying one of their other albums but don't have this one, maybe you should point yourself in this direction, you won't be dissappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gets better every time I see it, Feb 20 2004
I can honestly say I left the theater unhappy after watching this movie. And I don't know exactly why, but I think it's because this was somewhat of a formulaic comedy similar to just about every other comedy out there.

But the more I look back on the theater, I think I went into it looking for a "classic" comedy, something new and mind blowing, and this isn't that. This is along the lines of Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, and even as far down the food chain as say Duece Bigalow or The Ladies Man. (yes, I have targeted SNL Flicks there, but this movie DOES star Will Ferrell). That being said, I think of this movie as having some great lines and or scenes (Shawnn William Scott's small part is one of my favorite parts of the entire movie).

If you're looking for some goodhearted, crude, humor, then this is the flick, it's not a "classic" (it's not Animal House, as much as it wants to be), but it's well worth a watch or two. If even for just the funniest 10 moments or so.

3.0 out of 5 stars Still a good CD, but only for fans, Feb 19 2004

I'm not going to go into what a great bass player Les Claypool is. Realistically, it's pretty common knowledge given how many awards for it he's received from sources like Guitar magazine.

Additionally, I'm not going to go into how much of a fan for Les Claypool's music I am. I love it.

That being said, this is a great album for fans. It's is definitive of Les Claypool's style and sensibility and I'd have to say that if you like Primus, you should, by all means, like this album.

Given that I've now said all that, if you're not a Primus fan, this could be a dissappointment for you. Primus is kind of one of those bands you either LOVE or HATE, I've come to find, and there are a lot of people who just don't get them. If you don't like the slap-bass sounds and strange rhythems that Les uses, you don't want this album. If you love primus, then you should have either heard this album, want this album or HAVE this album...

3.0 out of 5 stars Honestly, not sure., Feb 19 2004
This review is from: Vulgar (Widescreen) [Import] (DVD)
This movie was exactly as the title says... It's Vulgar. And it's not for everyone. That would be an understatement in the highest level of the word.

This movie, if you don't already know, is part of the View Askew Universe, created by Kevin Smith. BUT, this isn't by any means your average Kevin Smith. There are some snippets of "Smith-quality" dialogue in here and it's fairly well written, but lacks quite a bit of the fun-loving sense of humor that is in Smith's movies.

Actually, it would be pretty impossible to have a movie about clown-rape and make it "funny". I guess that's where it goes though. If you're willing to put up with a story driven by the raping of a clown, then you might enjoy this twisted little film. It's not great, but not bad either.

5.0 out of 5 stars interesting and extrememly quirky film. Classic Coen, Feb 16 2004
This film seems to me to be the epitome of a Coen Brothers Film. It seems to be a rambling plot of humorous and quirky characters who are portrayed to be much greater than they really are. Jeffrey "the Dude" Lebowski is the main character and "hero" of this installment of the Coen's Filmography. He rambles on his way trying to get compensated for a rug that was peed on by some pornographer's goons.
Everything he does to try and remedy the situation seems to be a complete wrong turn and everything about the man is kind of in shambles, but it really does seem to have a feeling of humanity to the character. The Coens have indicated that "the Dude" is loosely based on a friend of theirs who has been known to rant about how his rug "ties the room together," while Jeff Bridges seems completely at home in the uber-slacker role of playing Jeff Lebowski.

Great characters, humorous story, more silly plot twists than I can even refer to, this is one of my favorite simple pleasures movies. The Dude abides and so does this movie. Check it out...

5.0 out of 5 stars This film is great, Feb 16 2004
This review is from: SLC Punk (DVD)
This was an intelligent and fun romp through the Salt Lake City Punk scene from the Mid-eighties. It is the story of Steve-o, essentially the "poster boy" for left wing punks in the SLC area, but also essentially believed to be one of the more intelligent people in the area too.

Steve-O is played by Mathew Lillard of "Scream" or "Scooby Doo" fame (he played Shaggy). No. This is NOT your typical Mathew Lillard performance, though his zany personality DOES come out some in his character.

The first time I saw this movie in any way, shape or form, I started watching near the end of the movie and it was one of the more confusing, worthless movie experiences I've EVER had and it really turned me off to the possibilty of this being a good movie. Then I moved in with a roomate who owned the Video and was "forced" to watch the movie.

It's a great flick about politics, "punks", society, love, and life. I really like the characters, the way the film shows the growth of all the characters, and I feel the side bar things, such as narratives and explanations of scenes (the fight scene with the rednecks being what I'm referring to) are great for showing a point, moving the plot and also justifying some scenes to punch up the movie a bit.

Well worth your time, this small film is definitely a film to watch. Some of the scenes are nearly stolen by the man who plays Lillard's dad, as he has a great performance too.

It's hard to review something that really gives you a gut feeling of disgust and anger. But then again, the REASONS for that disgust or anger is because the movie is believable.

It's a kind of rough film, edited in a way that it seems kind of gritty, with home video feel to it. The story is of the idle time of kids essentially on the streets in New York and is also kind of a "coming of age" film, with a HUGE twist.

It also is a movie to show the dangers of sex, drugs and alcohol, and it does so through the tales of numerous kids in the story, most notebly Telly (played by Leo Fitzpatrick), his friend Casper, and also characters played by Rosario Dawson and Chloe Sevegny. It's hauntingly believable and the "surprise ending" is both disgusting and kind of fitting.

I'd recommend this movie to anyone, but I don't think I could OWN it. It's kind of one of those things you're happy you've seen, but also glad you don't HAVE to see it again. Powerful and painful in one blow, this is a completely unforgettable movie. It's just too bad that sometimes you don't forget things because they leave haunting images of reality in your mind.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great poppy-alternative rock music., Feb 16 2004
This review is from: Via Satellite (Audio CD)
I really do love both of the Super Deluxe albums that were put out. They're both fantastic works of music and it was really unfortunate that themselves and Green Apple Quick Step came about near the time of the "Death" of Alternative music. These were more sonically comfortable albums than some of their Seattle predecessors and showed great promise.

That being said, I also have to admit my bias. I've got a special affinity for this album as it also contains work by my brother on keyboards. He became friends with Super Deluxe while playing in the Seattle scene with his band, the Amatuer Lovers, and it made it easy to become a fan of these bands as well.

They just make good pop music. It kind of transcends genre and style, as it really doesn't fit into a category all that well. It's too clean and polished sounding to be "grunge" or "alternative" from the same era, but comparitively too "experimental" to also be considered "rock." I almost consider it to have qualities of 70's Pop music as it's very accessible, it sounds like something that you may have heard before, and now, it just makes me feel nostalgic.

If you haven't heard any of Super Deluxe's CD's, check them out. They're great.

I'm really not sure where I stand on this movie, but I've seen it at least 10 times now and that's really whare I stand on it still. It's got so many questions that it makes you ask yourself after watching it, it makes you wonder if you saw it all, or watched it "right."

So you watch it again. And the second time, you seem like you THINK you've got a grasp of what happened until you try and reflect.

The story is of paranoid schizophrenic Donnie Darko, who has delusions that a man in a bunny suit tell him about time travel, life, death, and just about anything else that comes up. The actual happenings of the movie seem more inconsequential as Donnie struggles with his grasp of reality and fiction, but all the while trying to solve the mysteries of time travel, and growing up.

It's a confusing movie. Deliberately incoherent at times and I'm assuming you're supposed to have an opinion of "what exactly happened" after you've watched the film.

I've watched the film 10 times or so and still am not exactly sure, but at the same token, I've taken the time to watch the film 10 times, so it couldn't be all that bad. If it were strictly incoherent and not thought provoking in any way, then I'd probably be pissed I shelled out the money for it, but as it sits, I've got my money's worth out of it.

Whether you like it or not, I'd say this is a movie for just about everyone to watch. It's got humor, wit and some intelligence to it, in addition to being a confusing little conversation-starter.

This is an absolutely GREAT mob flick, and it's also one of the first movies to start Johnny Depp into more mature and serious roles. His Portrayal of Joe Pistone is amazing. Additionally, Al Pacino's portrayal of Lefty Two Guns, Donnie Brasco's Mentor, is ALSO amazing.

This movie is especially good because it's a mob movie done from the other side of the spectrum. Instead of having the central figure being a mobster, who is destined for either jail or a pine box, the central figure is a FBI agent, who's infiltrated the mob deeper than anyone in the history of the FBI.

Basically, what you get is a main character who is human and has all the traits of a normal person, but it also shows the human side of the mob. You see how a person could become part of it, how they can get drawn in, and how the mob acts like family. And from how it sounds, Pistone got so far into the mob, he wasn't sure if he really wanted out. Depp's portrayal of this is fantastic, and I can't say enough about how much I like this movie.
