5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous filmmaking, great pacing, fun story, Jan 30 2004
This story was great. It had action, comedy, plot, style, and was just interesting. Essentially it's the story of luck, good and bad, spread out through a number of interesting characters. The storytelling is done in a non-linear way which makes it so things unfold to you kind of as they're unfolding for the characters.

The story is basically a heist story with about 100 twists mixed in, as well as some cockney-slang and great characterization. This was a great intro film for Guy Ritchie and is on par with his more well-known "Snatch," if not a better movie. If you liked Snatch, you'll definitely like this movie.

2.0 out of 5 stars this movie just wasn't for me..., Jan 30 2004
This review is from: Swimming Pool [Import] (DVD)
I'm not exactly a fan of foreign films to start with, so this story seemed to have a strike against it to start with, but I thought, what the heck? The ONLY saving grace for this film was that there was a plot twist at the end. Too bad the time it took me to get to the plot twist nearly had me sleeping. The acting was fine, the script and pacing of the story made you feel like you were moving in slow motion. Non-linear stories don't bother me, as Tarentino movies seem to do it and not seem to have slow pacing (in fact Tarentino's non-linear storytelling seems to speed up the flick, as does Guy Ritchie's, though they're also a different style of writer than the writer of Swimming Pool).

This doesn't surprise me that the movie was in the $6.99 Dvd bin, as it seemed similar to any other B-movie "suspense-thriller" made in any other country. (Though I hardly found the movie either suspenseful OR thrilling)

Everyone's a critic and it looks like there's a lot of people who really enjoyed this flick. I wasn't one of them. If you like slow, "suspense-thrillers" that aren't really suspenseful OR thrilling, then, by all means, rent or buy and watch this movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't believe I didn't own this sooner, Jan 28 2004
This review is from: The Infamous (Audio CD)
This is an absolute classic CD. ALL tracks on it are good to great and the production is kind of gritty to go with the music. It seems that both the Mobb and the Wu's music went a bit downhill once the production turned clean. I love "Survival of the Fittest," "Temperature's Rising," and "Drink Away the Pain" ft. Q-tip, and there's obviously the classic "Shook Ones Pt. II." This album has quickly become one of my favorites and I'm absolutely baffled as to why I didn't buy it sooner. If you don't have it, you're missing out on a still fresh sounding classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD, including the filler, Jan 27 2004
This review is from: Disposable Arts (Audio CD)
This was a great CD that was slept on by the masses. The fact that the URB review claims that he "sounds like an Eminem clone" angers me greatly as Ace has been around far longer than Eminem and even more so, he doesn't rap anything LIKE Eminem. His tone of voice may be similar, but the similarities seem to stop there (I guess there could be the other exception of "Acknowledge" which is a battle song, similar to many battle songs Eminem has done, though it could be similarly compared to "Jack the Ripper" by LL, "2nd Round KO" by Canibus and so many other battle songs by so many other artists). The filler IS a bit much on this album, but the album is essentially a concept album of a man who's been away for a long time, reflecting on his past and looking to the future. The filler works to tie all the songs together and does so successfully. Stand out tracks are "Dear Diary," "Block Episode," "Acknowledge," and "Alphabet Soup."

I think that if you've got this far to reading reviews, you've got to make a point to dismiss the URB reviewer. They start with an apparent compliment(which holds EXTREMELY TRUE as the album wasn't all that much of a commercial success)in this line: "It's tempting to dismiss this album as another failed comeback by an '80s pioneer, yet Masta Ace stays one step ahead of irrelevance," then tries it's hardest to break down a really good album. Sure. There's filler. Sure. Maybe a bit too much filler. But that doesn't make this any less of a great album and compilation of great songs. If you want to see a master at his introspective best, pick up this album... It shouldn't disappoint.

3.0 out of 5 stars This CD wore on me, Jan 27 2004
This review is from: Dark Days Bright Nights (Audio CD)
After a fairly hot single and big Timbaland hype, I bought this disc and was happy with it for a couple of weeks. Then it got old, stale and boring. I can hardly listen to it any more, where other cd's just seem to get better with age.

If you're looking for GREAT Southern Hip Hop, grab some old-school Outkast (Southernplayalistic or ATLiens), the first Nappy Roots album (I haven't heard enough of the second album to have an opinion), or even get some southern flavor from Devin the Dude ("the Dude" is better than "Trying to Live") or Scarface. This CD was mediocre at best, but still better than a lot of the other crap that's out there, hence the 3 stars.

This is still one of my favorite Alice in Chains albums though it is very short and a big step away from(ahead?) their older music. A great collection of songs, though a short CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for STP fans,, Jan 23 2004
This review is from: Thank You (Audio CD)
This is a great package and a great bargain. A Dvd full of great songs clips and bootlegs, along with a greatest hits disc that shouldn't disappoint. If you've got all the CD's already, there's a new song and all the Videos STP ever made included, so the Record label should be able to suck you in on this bargain too. Well worth your money.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, experimental, and fairly typical for Outkast, Jan 22 2004
This album or pair of Albums still hasn't really hit me yet. I've been a huge Outkast fan since the days of ATLiens and have every CD they've made. This is by far the most experimental and unfortunately, it ranks as one of my least favorite of all of their albums. If you're looking for straight-up Hip-hop, pick up Southernplayalisticaddilacmusic. If you're looking for a major experiment by two great artists, this is your gig. Speakerboxxx is more of a hip-hop album and seems to fit in a little better with the classic albums of Outkast, minus a major voice of Andre 3000. The Love Below is an eclectic mix of prince, sly and the family stone and Frank Zappa's humor at times. Andre 3000 hardly even raps on the whole album, which is a dissappointment to me as I feel that it's one of his strong suits and he could have been a little more diverse in his experimentation.

Overall, this is the kind of album that you're either going to buy or not, more based on previous experience and radio hits than anything else. It's a lot of tracks from some solid artists, but it almost seemed like they could cut back a few songs each and just make a single CD out of it. The standout tracks are the singles and potentially "A Day In The Life Of Andre Benjamin" and maybe "Temple of Boom" featuring Ludacris and others.

Personally, I'd suggest buying either Southernplayalisticaddilacmusic, ATLiens, or Aquemini before I suggested this album, unless you're more interested in the newer sound from Andre Benjamin. For me, I'd rather have a little mix of old and new.

5.0 out of 5 stars an amazing tale of heroism and sadness in the Warsaw Ghetto, Dec 11 2003
This review is from: Yossel April 19, 1943 (Hardcover)
Basically, Joe Kubert, the author and artist of this graphic, is doing a "what-if" story based on if his family did not make it to America when they originally left Poland. It works well as a historical peice because all of the things that happen in the story are based on interpretations of what COULD have happened to a young man in the Warsaw Ghetto. Additionally, the author makes the story very believable because Kubert looks at it from a VERY personal perspective in that it's a first person narrative. The graphics in this book are absolutely beautiful in their rough form. The pictures are reproduced to appear as pencil drawings, and the unfinished look and rough style of 50+ year comic veteran, Kubert, do nothing but enhance this already impressive story. His sketches are amazing. They're rough, but very detailed. They have such a human characteristic in their rendering, in that they're very detailed but also very 'flawed.' It makes them perfect for the story. They reflect the narrator's emotions and feelings throughout the story and also manage to change as the story goes on, as the narrator's views and beliefs change throughout the story.

This is basically what a graphic novel is SUPPOSED to be. A great story told through both pictures and words. It's also a heart-wrenching view into a very sad time and place in our history. Normally, I'd say that being a comic book fan would create a bias towards a graphic novel. This is not your average comic book/graphic novel. This is an amazing tale of heroism and sadness told through words and images. If you care at all about good, heartfelt storytelling, then you should purchase this Graphic Novel. It will not disappoint...

2.0 out of 5 stars absolutely disappointing, Nov 19 2003
After the masterpeice that was Uncontrolled Substance, this substanceless peice of fluff hardly even registers as buyable. In fact, I wish I hadn't shelled out my $19 for it. And that says a lot. I love Wu-Tang. I have MANY, if not MOST of the solo albums, and this is probably my absolute least favorite that I have purchased (with the possible exception of the Trials And Tribulations of Russell Jones, which shouldn't register as a Wu Album in the first place).

If you're looking for a great album, look elsewhere. If you like the Wu sound and want to buy something that is worthy, buy Liquid Swords, Uncontrolled Substance, or Enter the Wu. Skip this one... Unfortunately, Deck didn't come with the bangers this time.
