5.0 out of 5 stars the comeback of all comebacks., July 3 2004
try not to drool.
this is quintessential elvis.
elvis unplugged
elvis dressed from head to toe in black leather.
elvis, a living breathing sex machine and in voice so powerful that one cannot argue the fact that this voice was second only to sinatra's in the ability to wring every last ounce of emotion and style out of a song.
a definite high point in a career that had many highs and lows.
elvis was always best when he had something to prove and oh, he had something to prove.
he had gone hollywood for nine years and was considered old hat. his carny broker manager had insisted upon hollywood.
but elvis was restless and rightfully sick of the crap that hollywood was throwing his way and he wanted to be a vital force again.
one can see that upon his entrance. he is nervous but that nervousness only adds to the his own sex appeal.
it is the unplugged sections (and especially the lost unlpugged sections) that elvis is a rocker pure and simple.
the production numbers are admittedly dated and cheesy but even they have an appeal and are appropriately of their time period.
1968 - 1969 was elvis at his best post sun career. he followed this up with his best post sun album 'from elvis in memphis' which is not just one of the best elvis albums, but one of the best r & b albums of all time. then came 'at the international hotel' a great but too brief vegas concert and before vegas swallowed him up.
i think the 'singer special' appropriately named. not because singer sewing machine sponsored it but because, while there may have been better and more profound rockers than elvis, elvis presley is undoubtedly the best 'singer' rock and roll has produced.
if you want to see why elvis prelsey is a legend it is right here.

5.0 out of 5 stars we always knew he would rebound, July 2 2004
This review is from: Musicology (Audio CD)
unlike michael jackson, prince is no fad, no flash in the pan. prince has always been and remains an artist.
his 'musicology' is grounded in the traditional likes of sly and the family stone and miles davis.
for a while it seemed he was purposely derailing his own career. but in the last couple of years he has obviousely found a new sense of purpose and drive.
now with a happy marriage and a focused spiritulaity he is going with the old maxim that less is more and in that case musicology is the best thing he has done in a way long time.
its good to have him really back. dont hesitate

4.0 out of 5 stars the beauty and the horror of the catholic church, July 1 2004
i think tom keogh's a bit 'off' kilter and it echoes the reviews that came out when the film was released.
the charge of emotional vacancy has since been rendered somewhat mute by the films growing status.
now admittedly, the overriding emotional sense that most people seem to experience when seeing this is one of anger, rather than one of tragedy and ,yes, that is partly due to our never really getting to know the indians who are, predictably, massacred.
we are emotionally more jolted upon seeing the murder of the priests who we have gotten to know.
that aside, i think joffes direction works because what he is attempting to show, and succesfully does so, is both the beauty and the horror of catholicism.
there is a touching beauty upon seeing deniros character finally reaching his muddy penneance, and in the scene where he cooks a steaming stew for his fellow priests.
perhaps one of the most beautiful, simplistically effective moments is when deniro narrates first corinthians 'love is not puffed up'.
yes, the conclusion is all too predictable. not just because we know the history, but because as much as we all can see the beauty in the church, everyone is also well aware of its ugliness.
i am suprised that the catholic church showed its support of this non flattering film, which shows, perhaps, a certain amount of theoretical penance on its part.
one of the last scenes which shows two naked indian children aloft in a boat after the massacre is an example of a picture telling a thousand words.
in one sense mr keogh is correct in recognizing an inherent coldness in the film but i think that is a realization of the harrowing cold heartedness that catholic church has shown in its history, which paradoxically is unified with its undeniable beauty.

5.0 out of 5 stars a magical evening of infectuously fun music making, July 1 2004
karajan told an interviewer that this concert reinvigorated him. he had been in much pain and, to be frank, had been producing much joyless music making for quite some time. before this concert karajan restudied these scores and put his heart, soul, and mind into this 'very theraputic concert'
the sense of fun that karajan had here is infectuous. this is as much fun as his decca recording of fledermaus.
too, his masterly sense of direction is a joy to watch. he controls the crowds clapping with merely a glance.
the staged dances (one with horses) adds to the sheer spectacle of the evening. by the time its over you really feel you were there and this is undoubtedly the best of the 'his legacy' films.
one MAJOR complaint to sony. while sony has released some of the more inferior editions (the bach and vivaldi concerts-two composers karajan simply was not aesthetically suited to) they have yet to release the brilliant (and his final) bruckner 8th
( a performance that floored leonard bernstein), the bruckner 9th or the strauss ein heldenleben. lets hope their releases are imminent.

5.0 out of 5 stars o'toole should have gotten the oscar, June 28 2004
this is a marvellous cult classic and has three fabulous performances in the vastly underrated barbara hershey and steve railsback.
of course the main thing here is o'toole. this and my favorite year were made close together and amounted to nothing less than a 'comeback' for the actor.
unfortunatley hollwood hasnt made such excellent use of o'toole since then but its a proud spot on this wonderful actors resume

4.0 out of 5 stars o'tooles tour de force, June 28 2004
the main flaw of this film is that it overstays its welcome. that said, o'toole delivers one of his most powerful over the top performances.
this is a true cult classic and, thanks to criterion, it has gotten the remastering it deserves.
not for the closed minded to be certian, but a challenging and rewarding comedy that delivers and jolts.

5.0 out of 5 stars an extraordianry charactor actor, June 28 2004
This review is from: Odd Man Out (DVD)
long after his death james mason remains one of the most extraordinary actors to have graced the screen. he posessed a beautiful, intelligent voice and is in a small league of such actors which would include edward g robinson, orson welles, ian holm, alec guinness, ralph richardson and a few others.
this film is a staple in his marvellous career and the film itself has an intensity that matches the acting of mason and reed's direction took full advantage of the powerhouse actor he had aquired.
dont hesitate

5.0 out of 5 stars the 'voice' that will transport you, June 27 2004
This review is from: The Concert Sinatra (Audio CD)
i recall that upon first hearing this on lp any doubts i had regarding the pure artistry and beauty of sinatras voice were wiped away. youll melt upon hearing lost in the stars and indeed be carried away in a way that only sinatra can transport you to another place.
youll never walk alone is a song that usually reeks of banality but here it is, for once, a breathtaking work of art; a huge example of the art of interpetation.
ol man river ranks with the paul robeson recording and my heart stood still stands as the most exquisite reading ever.
absolutely essential

5.0 out of 5 stars no 'smooth' jazz here., June 27 2004
i recall one of the earlier reviews that said listening to ayler is akin to listening to someone yelling f --k in st peters basilica.
that pretty much sums it up.
'smooth jazz' is as much an oxy moron as 'soft rock' is and i would imagine any fan of aylers would wholeheartedly agree.
this short lived disciple of coltranes has an important place in jazz history, EVEN IF ken burns isnt aware of it.
this is a very good place to start. 'spritual unity ' is imperative ayler as well
