5.0 out of 5 stars Bump up your lunch!, Oct 27 2002
A mouthwatering cookbook. I highly recommend it. It offers some really great ideas to jazz up your lunch. Great photos and easy-to-follow recipes. It's also a fine introduction to Japanese home cooking. Recipes are for one serving, but can easily be multiplied which makes it great when cooking for one or two. They're not only excellent for lunch, but they also make great dinners at home. What more could you ask for from a cookbook?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Treasure of a Cookbook!, Sep 20 2002
I first flipped through this book when I was a teenager almost 18 years ago. I have to admit I was a little put off my the ingredients and techniques that were all so new to me. Years later I gave it another look through. Being a vegetarian at the time, I was missing Chinese food and wanted to try making some of my own. I bought this book and that was it for me. Every weekend I found myself exploring Chinatown, Little India, Japanese, Korean and Thai grocery stores. Afterwards I'd run home and whip up some outstanding meals.

Since then, I've collected most of Madhur Jaffrey's books and my kitchen has truly transformed. I fell in love with Asian food, so much so that I packed up my cases and headed over here to Asia.

This is truly an inspirational and indispensable book. Her Chinese dishes are among the best and her Indian ones are far better than any dishes I've ever had at any Indian restaurant. The tomato chutney is out of this world!

This book is a great launching pad if you're a vegetarian and want to learn how to cook. It's a great alternative to the gaseous bean-filled or heavy-handed cheese recipes in other Western veggie cookbooks. It's also a fantastic cookbook if you want to venture into Asian cooking. Give it a go!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unlocking Great Asian Secrets, Sep 20 2002
I'm a huge Madhur Jaffrey fan and I must admit this is one her better ones (even though it may be quite similar to Far Eastern Cookery). With tempting pictures and easy to follow recipes you can easily recreate some of Asia's best dishes. I've rarely suffered mishaps with her recipes. I think you will find many of her recipes to be guaranteed successes.

I live in Korea and I've tried most of her Korean dishes in restaurants and homes. Her recipes are authentic and, dare I say, better than most of the ones I've tried here. My Korean friends would also agree. However, never substitute Korean gochujang - there's no alternative as she suggests. Try the recipe for bulgogi. It's one of the best I've ever had!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Way to Learn the Basics of Chinese Cooking, Sep 20 2002
If you love eating out for Chinese and have always wondered how they prepared some of those wonderful dishes, this is the book for you. Ken Hom offers some great lessons for the novice on Chinese cooking in this cookbook. Every recipe I've tried has been a guaranteed mouthwatering success. The Sichuan braised fish is out of this world!

Give it a go!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great eating!, Sep 20 2002
I picked up this book on a trip to Japan and didn't really expect much out of it. To my surprise, it's become one of my all-time favourite cookbooks. It's a great way to start learning about Japanese home cooking. There are also some great recipes for Korean and Chinese dishes. Every recipe I've tried is quite tasty and easy to prepare. It's also great when cooking for 1-2 people or when you're on the go. For years I've thought rice was a side bowl of dry and bland grains. Well, no more! Get yourself a decent rice cooker and get ready for a new way of preparing wholesome, quick, and delicious meals.
