5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Pop Vocals for Amore!, April 20 2002
This review is from: Romantic Jazz Vocal (Audio CD)
This is a terrific CD of pop vocal standards at a great budget price. With classic jazzy songs from talented stars like Sarah Vaughan, Nat King Cole and Peggy Lee, you can't go wrong with this selection. Perfect for romantic evenings or just hanging out by yourself. Be sure to check out the companion CD volumes "Jazz Vocal at Night" and "Late Afternoon Jazz Vocal". All 3 CDs make a terrific introduction for anyone curious about pop vocal standards from the 50's and 60's.

5.0 out of 5 stars The "wonder" of Anita Ellis!, April 19 2002
I am glad that the Collectables Jazz label has re-released some of Anita Ellis's 50's LPs onto CD. She has been forgotten, but was one of the greatest jazz vocalists in the 50's, and enjoyed a short renaissance in the 70's. Now is the time that anyone who loves terrific singing to discover this exceptional vocalist. This is an intriguing "concept" album which explores the wonder of falling in love and evolves into the disillusionment of a broken love affair. There are spoken passages between the songs explaining the character's feelings about the relationship. She starts from the heights of "If I Had a Ribbon Bow" and "Wait Till You See Him", then moves into the bittersweet as the relationship starts to unravel with "I Ain't Got No Shame" and "Roller Coaster Blues". Finally the woman is through with love and she looks for "Something To Live For" and "I Wonder Whatever Became of Me". This is a wonderful CD from a phenomenal talent. I can't recommend Anita Ellis enough to anyone who loves jazz vocals!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best "Big Band Girl Singers"!, April 19 2002
This review is from: Singin' 'n' Swingin' (Audio CD)
Connie Haines is certainly one of the best of the female vocalists who sang with the big bands in the 30's and 40's. She's been overlooked, but now is the time for her renaissance. She sang with Tommy Dorsey's Orchestra (subsequently earning the distinction of being one of the first to harmonize with Frank Sinatra, who also had a "tour of duty" with Dorsey's band) and sang with other bands and on radio. I first saw her and heard her sing in the Esther Williams' movie "Duchess of Idaho" where she sings the delightful novelty song "Let's Choo Choo Choo To Idaho" and the sassy swing number "Of All Things". If only those numbers were on this CD! She has a wonderful creamy voice and sings like a dream. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who likes female vocalists who know how to "swing"!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gotta Love the Vamps!, April 19 2002
This review is from: Cocktail Hour: Vamps (Audio CD)
This is a terrific 2-CD set at a phenomenal price. It has rare selections from shady ladies of stage and screen. Where else could you find songs of the 20's & 30's from ladies as varied as Peggy Lee, Marlene Dietrich, Judy Garland, Carmen Miranda and Lena Horne. Not to mention, this is the one place you can find very rare tracks from the likes of Tallulah Bankhead, Gloria Swanson, Joan Crawford and Bette Davis! Those tracks alone are worth the price! The one drawback (as on all CDs in the "Cocktail Hour" series) is the complete lack of track personnel info and liner notes. But I can overlook that and enjoy these wonderful songs from ladies the likes of which the entertainment world will never see again!

5.0 out of 5 stars More of Freestyle's Best, Oct. 28 2001
If collecting all ten volumes of the excellent "Freestyle's Greatest Beats" is cost-prohibitive, then this is a terrific alternative. Paired with the first volume of this series, this CD contains many of the best artists of the genre. It contains definitive classics from Company B, Shannon, Corina, Cover Girls and Nu Shooz, as well as rarer (but still slammin') jams from Joey Kid, Brenda K. Starr, Nayobe, Fascination and Monet. Get both CDs and you've definitely got freestyle's best. For an added bonus, check out the "Best of Freestyle" CD for additional classics. These 3 CDs are a worthy alternative for fans of freestyle.

If the price of collecting all ten volumes of the excellent "Freestyle's Greatest Beats" is cost-prohibitive, then this is an excellent alternative. Paired with "Freestyle's Greatest Hits Volume 2", this CD covers a majority of the best artists of the genre, and indeed contains some of the biggest hits. It includes Sweet Sensation ("Sincerely Yours"), Shannon ("Give Me Tonight"), Company B ("Fascinated") and Nice N Wild ("Diamond Girl"). In addition, it also includes harder-to-find classics like Tiana ("First True Love"), Pajama Party ("Over and Over"), Sandee ("You're the One") and Safire ("Don't Break My Heart"). For the price, this collection can't be beat. Get both volumes, and for an added bonus, check out the "Best of Freestyle" CD which contains additional classic jams. 5.0 out of 5 stars Put the Blame on ... Anita!, June 19 2001
This review is from: The Out in Front (Audio CD)
No one who has ever seen the film "Gilda" will forget the sight of the sensuous Rita Hayworth stripping off her long black gloves as she sings, "Put the Blame on Mame". Although Rita was a talented actress and dancer, her singing wasn't quite what the studio wanted, so she was uniformly dubbed in her musical numbers. (And more's the pity, really, because Rita did have a pretty singing voice with a small range. But I digress.) Anita Ellis is responsible for Rita's vocals in "Gilda". And you can enjoy the songs from that film, as well as many other film tunes and popular standards, in this new CD. The songs on this collection were recorded in 1952 and are fantastic. Her voice is pure and bewitching on these tracks. The liner notes also include a lot of little-known biographical info about Anita. It's wonderful that this talented singer can step out from behind-the-scenes and take her rightful place in the spotlight, front and center!

5.0 out of 5 stars Episode: Angels In Depth, Aug. 4 2000
Yes, the title of this review is a takeoff on the episode titles for this wonderful TV series, and it also applies to this fantastic book. The authors have really done their homework; this book has all the behind-the-scenes details on the series on its stars. I was a huge fan of the show since the beginning and hung on to the end, and this book is a trip back in time for me. Whichever lady was your favorite Angel (I'm a definite Jill fan), you'll find fascinating info about everyone associated with the hit show. I can actually remember watching the individual shows by reading the episode guide, and the critical commentary for each episode is right on the money. It's apparent the authors (especially Jack Condon) have a tremendous amount of affection for the show and its stars, but they don't keep that from acknowledging problems behind the scenes of the show's history. This is the kind of entertainment book I love; one that loves its subject and unearths every interesting bit of info they can find. I definitely recommend this book to everyone!
