2.0 out of 5 stars not actually bad, Nov 10 2011
There really isn't much going on in this book. Imagine Douglas Adams minus eighty percent of the snappy ideas. The author shows promise, but this the debut is muddled, and is short on both laughs and deeper moments. Not actually bad, but not quite good. I'd read more from this author, but I'd try to find it at the library.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Fun, Nov 16 2008
Iron Fist has always been a minor marvel character. But his potential has finally been tapped in these stories, a combination of super hero, martial arts movie, court intrigue and so much more.
The art is evocative and atmospheric. The writing switches between Bond style terrorists and Asian mysticism and action with ease. A very large and intruiging supporting cast has been added, leaving the reader just wanting to know more about everybody.
It feels like a movie, a fun, exciting movie. Iron Fist is well worth the time and money

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as part one, Nov 16 2008
This review is from: Annihilation - Book 2 (Paperback)
A definite dissapointment for me. I really enjoyed Annihlation 1, with the very cool return of Drax the Destroyer and Nova. Part two is still all a set up with the main villain, but the material has obviously worn a bit thin.
The Silver Surfer story was excellent, with wonderful artwork. The chapters on Ronan the accuser have average art and a mediocre story. The Super Skrull segment is nothing more than amateurish. Overall, this is not the book that it's predecessor was. I hope the last part is better, and will be cautious about buying it after this.

Slings & Arrows Comic Guide - 2nd Edition
Slings & Arrows Comic Guide - 2nd Edition

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensibal for real comic fans, May 9 2008
Very simply, this is the 'reverse comic buyer's guide' (bizzaro comics guide?). Most guides, like Overstreet or Wizard, have always focused on what a comic book is worth in simple terms of money. The Slings and Arrows guide only cares about quality. Virtually every comic book of note from the last forty years in is here, with a very accurate synopsis of whether or not it's good enough for you to spend your money and time on.
This is probably not a guide for the average 15 year old who only like Wolverine. But mature fans who really care about quality won't be dissapointed. The reviews have no agenda other than artistic value. They are only harsh with things that deserve it, and only praise books that have earned it. The guide even goes so far as to often break down series to what individual runs, arcs, and numbers you should read (or ignore).
The only thing wrong with this guide is that recent editions come out sporadically, but it remains an excellent pointer to older books you might not know about.
At the risk of sounding elitist, this is the kind of thing you have to be a devoted comics fan to appreciate. But if you thirst for knowing what comics are the best, this is the only book I've seen that can help you out.
