Best cover album i've come across, Feb 1 2004
I got this disc at a used CD shop in town for six dollars, I wasn't expecting much, as most of the Lennon cover/tributes i've heard were pretty lacking. I was dead wrong. There is only one bad cover on this dics, every other is great! Red Hot Chili Peppers/I Found Out - Slow, Angry, and funky. Something the peppers haven't ever done before and its cool to hear them do a song that doens't stick to their style. 3/5 Mad Season/I don't Wanna Be a Soldier - I never liked this song, but I think this cover is more enjoyable than to original (to me) Driving guitars and bass, and some really good vocals. 3/5 Candlebox/Steel and Glass - Awesome cover off the Walls and Bridges album. It's especially good because the guitar were buried by the string in the original, but Candlebox's cover features loud guitars and stand out bass. Cool guitar solo too 5/5 Blues Traveler/Imagine - Pretty standard in the beginning, with some cool bass fills, but after the first verse things get really blusey and some harmonica come in. Good rendition! 4/5 Screaming Trees/Working Class Hero - I always thought this was one of Lennons best, but the only cover i've heard was by Cyndi Lauper and it was awful (love cyndi though) The song starts out with just two guitars chiming with vocals, but it builds up and adds a cello and evtually drums and bass come in and give the song a lot of power, great cover. 5/5 The Minus 5/Power To The People - I head this song tacked on as a bonus track on "Plastic Ono Band" and this cover is millions of times better than the original, believe me. It is amazing Minus 5 were able to see the potential of this otherwise lackluster song, fuul of energy absolutely great. 4/5 The Magnificent Bastards/How Do you Sleep - Rockin cover. Performed with all the spite and malice of the original, featuring a cool guitar interlude. 4/5 Flaming Lips/Nobody Told Me - Amazing! recorded with cheap, super distorted guitars, it sounds perfect. Great drumming and basswork from the lips as usual. 5/5 Super 8/Well Well Well - Sounds just like the original, except for the extra loud guitars on the chorus and the awesome vocals (not to mention the solo!) 5/5 Cheap Trick/Cold Turkey - I don't like Cheap Trick, I don't like Cold Turkey, I don't like this version. Weakest cover on the disc 2/5 Collective Sound/Jealous Guy - Acoustic guitar instead of piano doing th cords on this one, no stirngs either, really cool! The only reason I don't give this one a 5 is because Elliott Smith's cover of this song is ten times better. 4/5 Sponge/Isolation - The biggst suprise on this disc. Opens with a strat playing arpeggios with the vocals, sounding very sad and eerie, but then the chorus comes in with an explosion of power chords and drums. Best cover on the disc. 5/5 Toad The Wet Sprocket/Instant Karma - a very happy, clean sounding cover. Not much else to say, very enjoyable! 4/5 Mary Chapin Carpenter/Grow Old With Me - Very sparse mostly her and a piano. The sound is so lush and beautiful, and her vocals are outstanding. 5/5 George Clinton/Mind Games - here's something unexpected, George Clinton from the funk grou Parliment giving this song some soul. Clinton does a superb jop, lots of strings and guitars, and delight and a great way to end the album! 5/5

don't they ever get tired of being imitators??, Sep 14 2003
Given, I love the first three Oasis albums (Yes, I thought be here now was nice) but what are they doing? Are Oasis just in it for the money? Were they put together by a record company to cash in on 60's nostalgia? It seems like it. Even in songs where they don't lift specific notes or riffs, it's easy to tell what 60s song they're building their own songs around. Don't they have a desire to be remembered as something greater? A real, original, rock n roll band? There were tons of imitators in the 60s, now long forgotten, and it appears Oasis will go this way. In the early nineties when George Harrison said "Oasis is a trite, unimportant band, who in 30 years no one will remember." I thought he was being bigheaded. Now I understand his statement and think he's right. I really, honestly think there could be real beauty and originality in their music, but they simply don't want it enough. Oasis should stop. Noel and Liam should either start a new band or carry on as a duo, with a REAL fresh start, and make something their fans as well as themselves can be proud of in 30 years.

Good CD, Aug 29 2003
This is a good album. People will always complain that it's not the original Pink Floyd without Rogers fronting, well, i'll tell you strait: the band with Rogers fronting isn't the original floyd either, so stop your bitching. We'd all have been better off with Syd staying on as the frontman, then we would have been able to enjoy floyd's dreamy creative peak with a sense of good humor too. I don't care if you enjoyed Rogers more or not, this IS pink floyd, and this is another good album by them, that DOESN'T sounds like a Rogers-era album, which is a plus. Would you prefer they imitated Rogers?

Not bad...., Aug 23 2003
After watching this concert 3/4 of the way through, I was planning on giving the thing a 1-star, no doubt. But when everyone came out and performed "The Tide is Turning" off or Roger's album "Radio KAOS", I was blown away. After watching this concert for the second time, I like it, but it still has many faults. First off, it's not a full concert, is a combination of clips from the rehearsal and the actual concert. plus some of the clips are concert footage combined with rehearsal audio (watch cyndi's lips on the Tide is Turning). I realize that there were many technical errors causing them to stop songs during the concert night, but in my opinion, they should have used the rehearsal concert (which took place the night before) for the video release, or have just combined clips of day one and day two, each with their REAL audio, NOT audio from another day. It makes it feel like they're lipsyncing and it is VERY annoying. When it comes to the guest performers, I thought they were all great. I was very much annoyed that Joni Mitchell and Sinead O'Connor on such boring songs, it was a big letdown. Other than that Cyndi, Van, Paul, The Scorpions, and Brian all did good jobs on their songs (even though I thought the Scorpions were dressed pretty trashy for that sort of occasion). It was really funny seeing The Band (Bob Dylans Backup Band) singing Comfortably Numb along with Van. If your looking for a seamless live recreation of the Wall, look elsewhere, if you've heard the damn thing all but too much and you want to hear something new, check this out. This concert also bears a lot of historical significance to me personally, whenever I watch them play "the Tide is Turning" is reminds me of how everyone used to think what a happy and beautiful place the world would be after the fall of communism, but nothing really changed.

What a Let Down, Aug 21 2003
When I saw all the big names appearing at the concert, I thought "It has to be too good to be true." Indeed it was. By the time they hit "Another Brick in the Wall part 2" you think it's going to be a great concert (plus.. well... Cyndi Lauper looks sexy as hell in the schoolgirl outfit), but then comes that absolutely horribly played guitar solo, and then you get to watch the keyboard guy get faaaarr too into it and tries to dance with Cyndi while playing, and THEN you see the bald German guy with three spikes of hair shooting strait up off his head jump out of no where and start tear it up on a "Key-Tar", adn you realize this is not going to be a good concert. I mean, I'm sure the audio CD is fine, but in addition to the above problems, the concert is also VERY dark and somewhat hard to see everyone. In the end, download the mpeg of Cyndi singing "Another Brick.." and Buy "In The Flesh" by Roger Waters on DVD or "Pulse" by Pink Floyd (Minus Waters) for a great post-pink concert.

please.., Aug 17 2003
just another marketing ploy to make teenages girls feel like they're being "different", and no one can understand how "deep" they are while listening to it. the girls don't make their own music, they don't write their own lyrics. No self respecting artist would carry themselves in such a manner on stage and even in music videos. These girls are far worse than any pop act i've ever heard or seen (Atomic Kitten included).

Drake's influence full blown?, Feb 15 2003
Ever hear of 60's british folk singer/guitarist nick drake? ever hear about the black crowes being influenced by him or hear them covering his songs? Once i was watching MTV a long time ago before I had heard the crowes and the video for She Talks to Angels came on, immediatly i noticed the distinct BEBEBE guitar tuning which until then had only been used by drake. I've been a fan since. In this album chris shows stong drake influences but completely maintaing his own style. The songs are beautiful and the lyrics tell wonderful stories. Can't wait to seen him in Kansas City!

Paul's Best Solo Album In A Decade, Feb 6 2003
People seem to go so hard on Paul. They always forget, The Beatles were a pop band, and Paul is a pop musician. Lennon and Harrison were the rockers of the group. Sure Paul has some rocking numbers, but Paul is the greatest pop writer of the century. Here's a song-by-song review. Lonely Road - Pretty good track. Sounds like something from the let it be/abbey road sessions. Nice drumming and bass From Lover to Friend - Really drawn out ballad ... not bad, but not a stand out . She's Done Talking - Slow rocker about being tired ... another filler Driving Rain - Besides the annoying "1,2,3,4,5, Lets go for a drive!" chorus, this song is really good. Nice acoustic melody mixed with great bass and drums. Definitely a stand out. I Do - another beatles-esq track. Kind of cutesy rocker. Tiny Bubble - Nice melody with a driving bassline, really one of the better tracks on the album. Magic - A drippy rock ballad with some chiming guitar work and a pretty good melody. Your Way - The best so far. Awesome bassline, cool guitarwork/soloing. Good lyrics, good melody. Definitely the kind of song you put on "Track Repeat." Spinning on an Axis - Kind of a boring song.... About You - Cool rocker. Great melody. Another nice bassline and cool guitar work Heather - vocals don't come in until the songs is over. Kind of nice but obviously filler. Back in The Sunshine - Very cool song. Reminds me of a Lennon song. Chiming guitars and aggressive bass, good production. Your Loving Flame - the most popular song on the album. It's the best ballad on the album hands down. Nice guitar solo, pretty catchy song about Paul's new wife. Riding in Jaipur - Boring middle-eastern flavoured instrumental trying to sound like a Harrison song. Rinse the Raindrops - 10 Minutes of rocking fun. The fastest rocker Paul's done in years, definitly one of his best songs. Freedom - nice melody..... but a little too simple for my tastes. So overall, there is some filler, but overall some of Paul's best songs.

Shut Up!, Dec 28 2002
Ok, Quit Complaining!! Ozzy did not rip off cheap trick's live album! The Nippon Budokan is one of the top Arenas in the world. When an artist does a world or japan tour, The Nippon Budokan is a definite stop. I've seen 20 shows there in the past ten years, and there's no question why so many artists do live recordings there, it's a great arena. Led Zeppelin played there, The Beatles played there, The Kinks played there, Pink Floyd played there, Ozzy and Sabbath played there on many many occasions. It's not like you can reanme an arena for your album.
