5.0 out of 5 stars The Bryant Family Chronicles, Sept. 12 2011
Dead men don't tell tales. Or do they? Perhaps all they need is a little technology and the Bryant family.

A simple fishing trip turns deadly for two men. In the dead of night, with no witnesses, it seems highly unlikely that the murderers will ever be found. With no clues to go on the case seems doomed form the start.

Fortunately, a local man has been working on a surveillance prototype in the area. With a little work and some extra resources, the puzzle starts to take shape. Is this a matter of modern day pirates or is something much more organized in the works?

The Bryant Family Chronicles is a smart action-filled thriller that showcases how modern technology can be used in unique ways. Be that a modern homicide or as part of an archaeological excavation. Very intriguing possibilities.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Great Golden Garland of Gampopa's Sublime Considerations on the Supreme Path, Sept. 12 2011
Dakpo Rinpoche (Gampopa) was one of the great fathers of the Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. A Master and teacher in the twelfth century, he was considered an advanced Bodhisattva on the verge of Buddhahood. It is said that Gampopa accepted his calling from the historic Buddha during a previous manifestation.

B. Simhananda seeks to bring Gampopa's Sublime Considerations to a new generation. To some extent the entries have been expanded or updated to make the material more relevant to modern life. However, as with all such enlighten material, the original voice is clear and untouched by time.

Volume one in this series is a huge work at over 500 pages. Yet, this tome is only an introduction to Buddhism including general topics such as finding an enlightened Master and expectations of following a spiritual path. At times, the information seems just like sage advice but there are quite a few pieces here that one could spend a lifetime contemplating.

Living with Joy is the expanded 25th anniversary edition. The original work was channelled through the author by Orin, a being of light. Added to this new edition are daily joy practices and affirmations.

As I was reading through this book, I was taken by the timelessness of the content. I have literally dozens of recent books on my shelves that discuss many of the same topics that are in Living with Joy. Yet, this book was originally published 25 years ago.

Just a Few Seconds

5.0 out of 5 stars Just a Few Seconds, Sept. 12 2011
This review is from: Just a Few Seconds (Paperback)
Just a Few Seconds is the first book that explores the adventures and misadventures of Derek Newark (stage name Nemo James). Like many kids, Derek became enamoured with music from a young age and decided he wanted to be a musician. At first, it wasn't much more than a daydream. After all, he had difficulty reading music and his musical repertoire was somewhat limited.

Over time, through short and longer term gigs playing an amazingly diverse range of music, Derek gained experience (and confidence). His sight reading improved to the point where he could back virtually anyone. In the process, he traveled the world and met more than a few interesting individuals.

Just a Few Seconds is an amazing story of perseverance and willingness to move forward even when the next step didn't seem obvious. I've read quite a few memoirs of rock stars and various bands as they worked to gain fame and fortune but I don't think I've read any stories about independent artists who pick up such a wide range of projects and essentially become jacks of all trades.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Way of the Happy Woman, Sept. 12 2011
I think the majority of us are so busy with day to day life that we don't recognize that we are out of balance. We push as hard as we can and try to use every minute to get a few extra things done. Of course, our health suffers. Only then, when we are forced to, do we dare take a breath.

In this constant push and pull, I think we have forgotten some of our greatest strengths. Often it seems ridiculous to take time for ourselves, to slow down, or to even notice our own natural cycles. We've completely forgotten that as woman, we are designed to follow a natural flow that slows us down so that we can be renewed and filled with healthy enthusiasm once again.

The Way of the Happy Woman asks women to celebrate themselves. To slow down and pay attention to their cycles so that they can make the best use of their natural gifts. It's an important message. I think for far too long we've been led to believe that all that things that make us women also make us weak. That somehow we have to be manly to be valued as human beings. Yet, in veiling our femininity, we also ignore some of our greatest assets, particularly the skills we need to cope and perhaps even thrive in such a chaotic world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Active Dreaming, Sept. 12 2011
I can always tell when I'm getting stressed out. I sleep but never seem refreshed in the morning. The funny thing is that during those periods, I tend not to remember my dreams. After reading Active Dreaming, I think there might be a connection here.

Active Dreaming looks at the importance of dreams. In our modern world, dreaming is something that is often overlooked and undervalued. Yes, we understand that we must have REM sleep cycles to stay healthy but tend to dismiss our dreams during those cycles as light entertainment.

With that said, who amongst us hasn't had a dream that came true or went to bed with a problem and happened upon the perfect solution upon awakening? Who hasn't dreamed of a symbol or idea that seemed to repeat itself all day long? Perhaps in dismissing our dreams, we are missing something significant. Something more than a way to work out issues and practice new skills or even beyond spiritual guidance. A connection to the deepest part of ourselves but also to others around us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Financial Recovery, Sept. 12 2011
Developing a healthy relationship with money. What would that look like? Can you even imagine living within your means and not feeling deprived? What would it feel like to do work you love and that pays the bills?

Financial equilibrium is a possibility for anyone and everyone. It's not about tightening up your belt or doing without. It's not even about getting a second job or quitting the work you love to find something more financially viable. Instead, it's about understanding where your money goes each month and if you are making the best use of your resources.

Financial Recovery points out that most of us don't really understand the difference between wants and needs. Often we buy things not because we need that item but because we have an unvoiced and unsatisfied need. Identify that need or that hidden desire and life suddenly becomes much easier and more fulfilling. It's like clarity, focusing on what's important rather than being pulled in a hundred different directions. Knowing what you want and working on that rather than madly filling emotional holes with stuff.

Expand This Moment: Focused Meditations to Quiet Your Mind, Brighten Your Mood, and Set Yourself Free

5.0 out of 5 stars Expand this Moment, Sept. 12 2011
The benefits of meditation are clear: clarity of mind, stress relief, and for spiritual journeying. It is, however, very easy to get caught up in the ego while meditating. Practice can easily become more of a competition than a method of self-exploration. At that point, it's really a waste of time.

Expand this Moment looks more to awareness of the moment. Making an intention, then taking a few breaths to experience that moment. Eventually, expanding that awareness, for the self-exploration and healing purposes.

The book sets out twelve focus phrases subdivided into three main phases. The first phase is Zen Awakening which teaches us to quiet our minds and direct our attention inwards. Next, is Emotional Healing which asks us to listen to our hearts and learn self-compassion. Finally, we expand outward to connect with others in Insight Mode.

In practice, it's a system that can be used anytime or anywhere. Simply take a few deep breaths when you feel hurried or things get chaotic. Every so often take the opportunity to reconnect with yourself so that you know you are on track or open yourself to the possibilities.

4.0 out of 5 stars Using iPhoto '11, Sept. 12 2011
This review is from: Using iPhoto '11 (Paperback)
If you have an iMac or MacBook, you are probably somewhat familiar with iPhoto. iPhoto '11 comes bundled as part of Apple's iLife suite of applications. Essentially, it's an all in one program to organize, edit, and publish your digital pictures.

Using iPhoto '11 provides a nice overview of the features of this program. Step by step, the book looks at the various features and options relating to organizing, editing, and publishing your digital pictures. Even if you've never used a program to manipulate your photos before, these instructions will provide more than enough detail to help you.

The thing I liked most about this book was the little tidbits about how to take great digital photos and the common mistakes people make. There are little things you can do while taking the actual pictures and then there are ways to fix a lot of problems during the editing process. Digital photography has made taking pictures easier (and less expensive) but no one really wants to miss that potentially great shot.

4.0 out of 5 stars My iPad 2, Sept. 12 2011
There are two ways to read My iPad 2. If you don't yet have an iPad and are considering buying one, you might want to pick up this book to take a look at the features. Essentially, take a test drive and see if iPad is right for you. The book even includes a little information on some of the top apps so that you get a little taste of these as well.

Once you've purchased your iPad, the book becomes a step by step guide. Probably the most difficult (yet extremely beneficial) tasks is syncing up your various devices. My iPad 2 takes you through syncing of all your music, photos, videos, ebooks, documents, etc. Complete with full colour illustrations of everything.
