4.0 out of 5 stars Great movie and great special features in the DVD, May 10 2004
I think by now, you have a pretty good idea of what this movie is about from the other reviewers. What I would like to say is that the DVD edition is just jammed packed with speical features. It has an amazing amount of behind the scenes features, the making of the movie, the standard voice over commentary, special effects features, story boards, a self serving making of the video game (which wasn't too good, from what I hear) and much more. This is a very good buy for fans of "Ahnuld", the Terminator. One of the few DVDs that I would consider a best buy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nothing like a good old fashioned riot, May 10 2004
I don't know what to make of this game. I think the idea is for it to be serious, but I wound up laughing at this game while playing it. You are going against the corporation and all h*ll breaks loose. For that matter, everything breaks loose. The crowd is all rioting by breaking into stores and stealling. You go around with your trusty baseball bat and club people to a nice pulp. But wait till the cops get a hold of you. You won't be a happy camper for long. Basically, the idea is interesting, if not a little warped. But the final verdict is that it is boring to play and has very little story line, if any, to keep you wanting more. I would say I got a few good laughs out of it. You haven't lived until you have seen a town go on a riot rampage. Speaks volumes about how RockStar sees society. Lots of people were looking forward to this game. It is luck that there wasn't a riot after they found out how poor the game was. Good thing I only borrowed the game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Forgetaboutit. A really different kind of "game", May 10 2004
This review is from: Grand Theft Auto III (Video Game)
(Reviewed in my best "wiseguy" voice...)
Look. Youse lookin for a good game with lots of people bein' whacked and what not? Nothin for nothin, this is the game for you, pal. But watch out. This here game is not a game for the kiddies, if you know what I mean. There are lots of swearin' and adult type situations with women, drugs and people bein' whacked. Your job is to move up in the organization. See? If you do a good job for the crew, you get rewarded by bein' moved up in the family. You gotta jack some cars and other things to keep up with the game. You gotta break bones. You gotta smach some heads. You gotta do some hits on undesirables. What else could you ask for? There are lots of side missions and a big old army tank to play with if you play the game right. So you have been warned, pal. Don't come cryin' to me if it looks too violent cuz I already wised you up. It ain't a game for every wiseguy, so you better check it out at your rental store foist before ya buy it. But as for me and my crew, we had a ball playin' with it. I woulda given it a "5", but there are some problems with it like finding different places, which is sort of hard if you ain't a cabbie that knows how to get around. Goin' from here to there and back again sort of got on my nerves. See? The side missions were a little lame but I'll give the developers a pass this time and let them go. So, whatareyoulookinat? Go play it for cryin' outloud.

Encyclopedia of Tropical Fish
Encyclopedia of Tropical Fish
by Esther J.J. Verhoef-Verhallen
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars A good overview and guide to tropical fish, May 8 2004
The book is not very big compared to other large tropical fish encyclopedias but what is contained in this volume is a very easy to understand and informative guide on the most popular tropical fishes The beginning of the book delves into the basic setup of an aquarium regarding the different sizes, proper water conditions, selection of fish, filtration, plants, fish selection, etc. The information is rather brief, but serves as a good starting point for novices. The rest of the book is broken down into specific species of fish from A to Z in their formal scientific names. For instance, you will find that the guppy is catorgorized under the letter P for Poecilia reticulata. Fortunately the more common name is underneath. Each fish is identified by a nice color photo, a description of its social characterstics (how it gets along with other fish and its personality), the food requirements, how it is bred, prefered water conditions, where it is from etc. This is very helpful in giving you a birds-eye view on each particular fish. The book was originally published in the Netherlands, so as a result, some of the common names for tropical fish are slightly different from the U.S nicknames. The photos are helpful in identifying the various fish even if the names don't match exactly. The references to size and temperature are in metric and centigrade. It was a little hard for me to picture dimensions and temperature because we, in the U.S, are still on the English standards. The book is not an exhaustive encyclopedia of tropical fishes, but if you are looking for a quick and direct book on this hobby, it would be a good choice.

4.0 out of 5 stars A necessary "evil"., May 7 2004
I have tried all sorts of memory card products to get around buying the expensive PS2 8MB card. The good news is that the Sony memory card is practically bullet proof. The bad news is that it is the only choice if you are serious about making sure your saves are safe. Why is this bad news? Three reasons. The price. The price. The price. Considering that memory chips have just about fallen to pennies per megabyte, the Sony memory card is still priced as though there were still a memory chip shortage. I cannot fault the card because it is extremely reliable compared to all the substitutes out there. Yes, there are cheaper cards out there, but none of them have ever proven reliable enough to use on a daily basis. The original is still the best. The thing that keeps this card from getting a perfect 5 star rating is the price. Sony, don't you think it is time to lower the price of the card?

Hollywood Babylon: The Legendary Underground Classic of Hollywood's Darkest and Best Kept Secrets
Hollywood Babylon: The Legendary Underground Classic of Hollywood's Darkest and Best Kept Secrets
by Kenneth Anger
Edition: Mass Market Paperback
Price: CDN$ 11.28
50 used & new from CDN$ 2.22

3.0 out of 5 stars An inside glimpse of Tinsel Town, May 5 2004
Kenneth Anger, once a child actor himself, unvales and points both barrels at Hollywood and its subculture of excess and outrageousness. Anger tells many stories of Hollywood's greats and not so great throughout the early history of films to the more recent personalities of the golden era of movies (1920s to 1950s). The book is writen in a gossipy National Enquire tone and is entertaining. However, after reading through the book, it seems that the author has a vendetta against Hollywood and is quick to shine the spotlight to uncover the weaknesses and shortcomings of the stars. One cannot help but feel that Anger, (an interesting last name for the author), may have had his own dreams broken by Hollywood and writes to salve his own bitterness about his encounters with Tinsel Town. If not for this edge to the writing, it would have gotten a higher rating. Just the same, if you are interested in Hollywood, in all its foibles, this may be a good read for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful looking game, April 23 2004
Five years ago, I would have said that producing a game that looks this polished and good would have been impossible. Just goes to show you how much I know. :) Enter Price of Persia. A game that is basically a film disguised as a game. The graphics look exactly like a movie animation. Think of the graphics of Little Mermaid or Beauty and the Beast and you'll understand what I mean. Gamewise, it is a challenging game for your logic and hand-eye coordination skills. The whole game centers on your character fighting the baddies, figuring out how to get from point A to B (and sometimes Point C,D,E,F etc.) without getting yourself killed. If you have ever played "Alladin" for the PS1, PoP is similar in gameplay. The game defies gravity and your character can make superhuman jumps, run up and along walls and other amazing physical stunts. The game is a nice combination of action and puzzle solving. If you are interested in playing a fun game and getting a head full of eye candy, Prince of Persia is the one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fully entertaining and fun game, April 23 2004
You know, I must have looked at this game at least five or six times at the store. Each time I saw the box, I picked it up, looked at the screen shots and decided, "Nah, doesn't look like too much fun. Too Cheesy". According to the magazine reviews, BG&E scored very highly. I didn't know this when I looked at the box. Now I understand why this game did not sell as well as it did. The marketing people did a totally horrible job in packaging this game. This was the main reason why I didn't buy it...because the game box made the game look silly. How wrong I was when I finally bought the game because of a friend's recommendation. I would have to rate this game 4 1/2 stars. The plot, graphics and gameplay are top notch. Think of the game as a cross between Tomb Raider and Pokeman Snap. There is lots of action, humor, excitement, exploration and puzzles to keep you entertained throughout the game. Most of the cut scenes are fantastic. Ubisoft, fire the guys who designed the box artwork for this game, and give raises to the production team who put the game together. Conclusion: A diamond in the rough. Pick up this game and you'll be glad you did.

4.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise, March 29 2004
This game had a lot of things going against it when I got it. First, I don't like Tom Clancy novels. Sorry Tom. Second, the game was a port off of a PC game. Usually, when this happens, the game goes downhill from there. Third, I got it for free. It was a buy one game get another free offer. "Gee," I thought to myself. "If they're giving it away, maybe the game isn't so good." Happily to say, I was wrong. Not about the novels, just about the game. Sorry Tom. You play a charachter named Sam Fisher. The voice that sounds so familiar is Michael Ironsides, otherwise known as "Jester" from Top Gun. Your mission - to save the world WWIII. You do this more by stealth than by outright killing. The game puts you in different parts of the world where you must obtain items, sabbotage, destroy sites and yes, even kill a few guys along the way. The game is very suspense packed in that you have to make sure that you are undetected during your missions. This is a lot harder than it sounds. If you are used to blasting your way out of tight situations, you will have to re-learn some strategy if you will ever hope to beat this game. This is a really great adventure game that places you right in the middle of the action. I would rate the gameplay aspect of Splinter Cell even higher than Metal Gear Solid 2. While SC lacks in the super graphics of MGS2, it more than makes up for it in fun and white knuckle suspense.

The Ultimate Guitar Scale Bible: 130 Useful Scales for Improvisation

1.0 out of 5 stars A collection of borderline scales, March 29 2004
The "strength" of the Ultimate Guitar Scale Bible, is also its biggest weakeness...the scales. There are an abundance of very obscure scales in this book. They are so obscure that you would find it hard pressed to utilize any of them in everyday playing or jamming. This book reminds me of some of the extrememly boring music textbooks that I had to go through while I was studying music in college. They were very dry and uninspiring. This book categorizes the scales each into their own section. The sections are then broken down into the ascending and descending music scales with the guitar scale grids. And that's it. As a reference book for music students taking harmony or theory, it may serve as a good source of information. As a guitar scale book to help the rest of us, it fails miserably.
