3.0 out of 5 stars American Dub, Sep 12 2011
This is not the version I grew up with as I was used to Doctor Elefan being called Professor Peabody. It turns out that the version I watched as a child was the CANADIAN dub which I found significantly better (voices, acting, etc). So if you grew up watching the American version, this boxset is right up your alley; if you grew up North of the border, you will want the Canadian version which I have yet to find on DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, Jun 17 2011
This review is from: Let Me In (DVD)
I usually watch the originals before seeing remakes but with all the controversy regarding subtitle issues for the Swedish version, I was reluctant to pick it up.

I finally decided to go right to this American version instead and I loved it. It's bittersweet and fantastic. Definitely a must see film (whether it be the Swedish version or the American version).

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Visuals, May 17 2011
This is a beautiful traditionally animated film. There is almost no coherent dialogue whatsoever and what little dialogue there is tends to be gibberish (or regional dialects that I am not familiar with). This allows viewers to have a sense of what is being said without needing to spell it out. It is a mood piece with a bittersweet tone.

The story follows a magician who once enjoyed great success on stage but now faces a world that is moving on. It's a wonderful journey with heartfelt moments and some heartache. It leaves the viewer in a nostalgic state looking back at the decades past and the people who brought us to where we are now and reminds us to never forget them or their legacy.

What captured me was not only the message of the film and its tone, but the gorgeous painted backgrounds as he travels about. This is a treasure to be admired. In a world of CG effects and flashy cuts, it's wonderful to see what can be done with pencils and art brushes at a nice, gentle pace. A cinematic beauty.

Stumbled upon this in the bookstore and laughed my way through it. I just had to buy it. It'd definitely make a great stocking stuffer.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this film..., Jan 20 2011
This review is from: The Black Hole (DVD)
I finally bought the DVD to replace my aging VHS tape and got to watch it in WIDESCREEN for the first time ever. (I first saw it on a BETA tape back when I was a child in the very early 80s and on VHS tapes since).

Though critics pan characters and dialogue, I love every line. I love that the characters are NOT young actors. And I love the raw effects throughout the film. Even more so having watched the "Through the Black Hole" documentary attached to the film.

This is a fantastic marker to the way films were done before computers could remove wires, a homage to the use of matte paintings, a display of taking risks.

And as much as the ending is reminiscent of 2001, I like that it hints at a strange burning hell below and an angelic doorway above to the mysteries and light beyond. To me, it's both fascinating and inspiring.

VINCENT and BOB remain two beloved robots. Though similar to R2-D2 from Star Wars they were different enough that I never felt they were a knock-off. VINCENT was more a cross between R2-D2 and KITT from Knight Rider. I loved his character and his lines in the film still bring a smile to my face.

It is a great film and a great resource for anyone interested in film making.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly great film, Jan 18 2011
Before putting this into the player, I was under the impression this would be some b-movie knock off. I was pleasantly surprised. It felt like the opening of Gladiator and then shifted to a pretty good hunters become the hunted tale. I would say it runs along the feel of 13th Warrior, Predator, and Gladiator but stays unique and visually impressive. I was deeply impressed with the scenery and watched the whole credits to find out where it was shot. (It's probably where The Hobbit would have been filmed if Peter Jackson had been forced to move his production).

This is an extremely violent film but worth checking out.

3.0 out of 5 stars Tolerable B-movie, Jan 14 2011
This review is from: Day the Earth Stopped (DVD)
Well, this is definitely B-movie class... budget, script, plot, acting, and directing but it's watchable (at least on a rainy afternoon when you're bored and tired of flipping channels on TV).

The premise is similar to "The Day The Earth Stood Still" (go figure) in that humanoid aliens (in this case a nude Sinead McCafferty and Bug Hall) come down to Earth to determine if there is anything in human nature worth saving. They have 666 (yep) giant mecha-robots positioned across the planet ready to destroy everything by sundown if they don't have proof. And it's all up to a simple soldier to show them.

The best performance in here is C. Thomas Howell's as that simple soldier. Nothing great in the script to work with, your eyes will roll throughout, but I felt he carried this fairly well.

I'm also noticing Judd Nelson in a lot of these B-movies (having just endured "The Black Hole" ...not the Disney one). It's a paycheque I guess.

I gave this 3/5 stars because I made it to the end of the film and it was better than the last few B-movies I subjected myself to. (And maybe I am feeling generous after watching "The Road" (starring Viggo Mortensen) last night which left me feeling completely depressed).

2.0 out of 5 stars Average direct-to-video film, Nov 23 2010

This film comes across as a made-for-TV flick. It's watchable but mediocre. You don't really care for any of the characters, the special effects are okay, the dialogue is bland, and the plot is simple and unsurprising. You'll find it in discount bins for a few bucks, I got it as a four pack for $6, and that's about that.

Hilarious film. I absolutely love it.
We bought the 2-disc edition and I can confirm that there is only the French track and an option for French subtitles on that edition.

My girlfriend recommended I see this film and I was deeply impressed with it as we watched it together. There's a few scenes that really stick with you... the hilarious singing in the diner kitchen, the climax, and even the last shot of the film. Great stuff.
