5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Historical Overview, May 24 2004
This review is from: Dream Machine (Paperback)
A graduate course in a book! A tour through historical theories, accounts, and events that made up the development of the modern computer and the Net. Far more extensive than just the story of Kicklider, a historical overview of many of the minds at that time and the events that converged to form the new informaton era.

4.0 out of 5 stars From the Mouth of Sir Tim, April 2 2004
This review is from: Weaving The Web (Paperback)
Pro: A recount of the history of the world wide web from the creator himself. Second pro, buying the book of the guy who gave us this really cool thing, and letting him reap a bit of financial reward. Okay, that's about it. If you are looking for a hard historical account of the web or the Internet's origins, you will only get a little bit of it here. Sir Tim recounts the internal tribulations of working at CERN and developing his hobby project in the first few chapters. After that, it becomes scattered and superficial. For a while he talks about DNS. Then he talks a bit about privacy. Then he wanders into ecommerce. The style is chatty and scant on solid information. Read the book; it's by Sir Tim. But buy another book to get the whole story.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Scream, Feb. 13 2004
How to have a video game that is fun to play but does not involve killings and violence? DODGE BALL! A great premise! Goofy! Hilarious. The Monsters Inc. characters go at it trying to whack each other with progressively zanier balls in progressively more unusual. You talk about a GREAT game for my 5 year old to play. And with the ability to play 4 players, the whole family can get into the goofy act. These are the warm moments that you recall with warm cocoa by the fire, how your preschooler whacked you with the disco ball! Great great!

5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas Joy For "All Of The Other" Raindeer, Nov. 17 2003
This review is from: Olive the Other Reindeer (DVD)
A sweet Christmas story of triumph over grinches, commercialization, and misunderstandings. Matt Groening goes from Life in Hell to the Simpsons to yet another triumph. A sense of humor and perspective on life alternative to the sweet drippings of frosty the snow man, Groening cuts current culture to a magnificent vision of what it means to be with each other over the holidays. Hey, there is a reason Nordstorm picked up on Olive and made it their advertizing campaign!

5.0 out of 5 stars Histories and Myths, July 3 2003
A superb history of the Internet, dispelling many a myth, such as "The Internet was designed in order to survive nuclear war." As a policy wonk pondering Internet policy, this book is must read material. It is difficult to truly understand today's policy conflicts, such as the DNS wars, unless one has adequate reference to the origins of the Net and the history of US Government support. This is not something that magically emerged from the ether but rather was a deliberate USG project dating back decades. An excellent history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvelous, May 3 2003
A mavelous book. Well written and beautiful art work. With simple words and simple style, will bring you to tears by the end. A wonderful way to introduce teachings of peace, justice, and a belief in God that leads to change to children. We read this book every year on MLK Day and my young sons talk about MLK all the time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fight Big Brother!, Oct. 29 2002
The Internet and the Information age has brought a new era of privacy, or lack there of. Identity theft is rampant and personal privacy is eroded in the name of ecommerce efficiency or "homeland" security. Internet Privacy for Dummies is an excellent text empowering the individual to fight big brother. What can you do to protect your privacy, in ten easy steps. What laws are on your side. And what forms can you fill out to vaporize that pesky telemarketer - all right there for your easy use. An excellent text - highly recommended.

Ruling the Root: Internet Governance and the Taming of Cyberspace
Ruling the Root: Internet Governance and the Taming of Cyberspace
by Milton L. Mueller
Edition: Hardcover
11 used & new from CDN$ 9.28

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Work!, Oct. 29 2002
Mueller's work, recounting the Internet's Domain Name Wars, is entirely "interesting." Little is widely known about the history and origins of the Internet; what many think they know constitutes little more than mythology. Here is an excellent recount of the history of the Internet's development, and how conflicts with the naming space came to be. This is required reading for those interested and concerned with the potential success or failure of the Internet governance experiment. This is a continuation of a long history of excellent work by Mueller and is well recommended.

An excellent book. In the tradition of Mr. Gaffin's reknown website Bostone Online, the book is enlightening for those of us from far off lands on the true culture and language of Boston. A true guide to bean town. Well recommended.
