5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Sci-fi carrying a powerful metaphor, Nov. 24 2007
The Matrix Trilogy, and especially the first installment, must be one of the most significant films of our time, and is likely to go down as an all time sci-fi classic along with the likes of Blade Runner. It is obviously laden with symbology fished from a variety of sources, but I wonder if the Watchowski brothers realised just exactly how powerful a metaphor for our reality they were creating.

The central premise that our lives are not 'real' but are steeped in illusion in order that our life force may be fed upon whilst we are enfenced unwittingly like cattle - this is a relevant and powerful message on many levels. It can easily be seen that this is true on a superficial level, with the rampant rise of ultra-aggressive capitalist consumerism, whereby everyone is 'sold a dream' in order to siphon off all income to profit the few, but it goes deeper than that, and can be used to catch a glimpse of some ideas on the true nature of reality. The overlap with material such as Castaneda is remarkable, with stories about the archetypal predator who is invisible, and feeds on us because he has 'given us his mind'. In all, it is a striking metaphor for the human condition.

Of course the great thing is that, even if you don't want to explore things to those levels, taken at surface value as a piece of entertainment, the Matrix is still a fantastic sci-fi/action film, with colourful characters, awesome visuals, and a solid original plotline. Taken as a trilogy, this is a fantastic piece of film-making artwork, but the first episode definitely has the lead for sheer impact and originality. Recommended to all!

For me, like the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, this amazing piece of entertainment should be enjoyed whole, with the complete epic story all in one package.

Here you get all three films in blistering high-definition AND many extras, AND importantly, the several mini-film 'featurettes' which flesh out the background story. The only reason for giving 4 stars rather than 5 is value for money, given that you pay a lot for the extra discs.

Taken as a trilogy, this is a fantastic piece of film-making artwork, though for me, this third episode is the weakest of the three, as the story gradually dissolves into excessive desperate violence, so for that reason I give it 4 stars. But don't get me wrong, it is still a very strong film and beats many other modern sci-fi efforts hands down. It just has a very high level of expectation to live up to, given the beginning of the trilogy.

Taken as a trilogy, this is a fantastic piece of film-making artwork, and the second episode seizes the now-established story and runs with it. The only let-down, as many have said, is that the second film ends abruptly and doesn't really stand up on its own as a self-contained entity - though it is always going to be difficult to be the 'middle' of a trilogy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The science of repeating social catastrophes, Nov. 3 2007
This review is from: Political Ponerology (Paperback)
Political Ponerology is a new science, born out of the pain of suffering under Communist oppression in Poland. It is the result of the search for a scientific answer to 'why' this kind of oppression happens, and what can be done about it. It turns out that the same scenarios repeat ad nauseam throughout history, in what Lobaczeski calls the 'hysteroidal cycle'. At the center of this are two concepts. The first is of a small but constant percentage of psychopaths, 'deviant' human beings who are basically conscienceless (due to genetic or environmental damage) and will only ever act for their own benefit, which inevitably turns into oppression of others. The second concept is that of the hysteroidal cycle where, during the 'up' part of the cycle, societal 'good times', knowledge of this deviancy is gradually eroded and lost, and society therby loses its immunity against it - this leads to a cumulative oppression of society as the 'ponerizing' influences begin to snowball, and ultimately a collapse of social order and human function as the population can no longer support itself under such extremes of manipulation.

This book is not an easy read to start with. I've found that repeated study has revealed further subtlety as my understanding has increased - it is also useful to read it as a natural companion to modern studies on psychopathy such as 'Without Conscience' by Dr Robert Hare, and 'The Sociopath Next Door' by Dr Martha Stout. It would also be useful to read what can be though of as a Ponerology case study, '9/11: The Ultimate Truth' by Laura Knight-Jadczyk

Ponerology is densely packed with concepts which are initially difficult to digest, partly because of their unfamiliarity, but moreso because of the profound implications that they have on life today. This can be hard to stomach, when one is comfortable in the belief that one is familiar with the workings of modern society and politics - this book does not pander to such comfortable beliefs, and instead shows an ugly underbelly which can be difficult to contemplate.

But contemplate it, we must! This study is extremely relevant today, as we are currently facing just such a social collapse under the extreme effects of runaway psychopathic oppression, under the brutal war of the Bush regime, in combination with savage corporate pillaging of the world's resources. We need answers, and fast, as social cohesion and the very fundamentals of human values are being rapidly destroyed before our eyes. Political Ponerology seems to be an absolutely essential part of that answer.

5.0 out of 5 stars In a whole different league to other books on the subject, Nov. 3 2007
There are many books about 9-11, detailing various alternative, emotional and often controversial opinions and commentaries about one or other aspect of what happened on 9-11 and why. THIS is not one of those books.

This book is a critical and painstaking analysis of ALL the disparate elements that culminated in the 9-11 event. No stone is left unturned to evaluate the bigger picture; to reject any hypotheses disproven by evidence; to penetrate the multiple layers of deceit and subterfuge; and to explain why it is inevitable that there is such confusion surrounding this event.

This is not merely an account of the 'facts on the ground'. It is a much broader study of the surrounding scenario - the political, social, cutural, psychological and even biological environment in which these events took place.

All the above adds up to the most comprehensive analysis possible - and by this means it is possible to work towards some earth-shattering conclusions, which are controversial, painful to consider, and which inescapably portray the modern world in a new and uncomfortable light.

"Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it", and the torrent of events following 9-11 have been history unfolding right before our eyes. This book is an excellent companion to 'Political Ponerology - A Science on the Nature of Evil Adjusted for Political Purposes' by Andrew Lobaczewski. In this capacity, it serves as a starkly real 'case study' of ponerology in action today. These two books in combination contain lessons that are fundamental for the future survival of humanity as we know it.
