5.0 out of 5 stars A True Gem:, Nov 11 2003
This review is from: Fandago (VHS Tape)
Any guy who has been on a road trip with his buddies - only to have things go other than planned - will thoroughly love this movie. The characters portrayed in this movie will certainly touch some personal heart string; and I think the actors do some of their best work ever in this picture.

The acting, the directing, the lighting & camera angles, the sound track, and the writing mix wonderfully to make you laugh, remember, reflect, and it gave me a desire to live life to its fullest. During this movie I thought about life & death, love & solitude... and I laughed many, many times.

For a deatail of the plot read the other great reviews of this classic. But I think it's best enjoyed watching with a friend. Guys: watch this movie with a friend and you'll howl at the humor and remember what true friendship is about. Girls: watch this movie with a guy and you'll see what makes us do some of the hair-brained things we do.

There are too many one-of-a-kind scenes to talk about here: sky diving, hitching a ride with a train, planning a wedding, and getting the bride there on time.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Drama of Life, Sep 5 2003
This review is from: A Young Girls's Crimes (Paperback)
David Rehak has every reason to be proud of his first book. I found it to be an enjoyable and full of a variety of passions. The book is very short compared to the length of many novels today, yet it is not short on the drama.

Flora is a character to whom you first would smile with understanding, then scold with anger, then strangle with outrage, then embrace with tender compassion. The ups & downs of life certainly filled her life.

Rehak shows the dangers of emotional imprisonment and of completely unbridled lusts. The touches of theology weaved into the story are accurate, yet not overbearing on the plot. Rehak shows how tender truths can reach a calloused heart.

There are enough plot twists to keep the story exciting, yet not so many as to make it annoying. This is certainly not the average fairy-tale story of a young girl experimenting with life's taboos. Reality has found a home in David Rehak's writings. His little novel has helped me to see that sometimes there is pain beneath a young woman's smiles. We all need to be willing to reach out & help before it's too late. Good job! I recommend this book, but to whom I am not sure. It will definately strike different folks with vastly different strokes. I think the sheltered reader might find some portions quite shocking; but should they continue reading to the end I think they will find satisfaction in the book and learn something in the process.

How to Stay Christian in College: An Interactive Guide to Keeping the Faith
How to Stay Christian in College: An Interactive Guide to Keeping the Faith
by J. Budziszewski
Edition: Paperback
48 used & new from CDN$ 0.01

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Graduation Gift, Jan 22 2003
Professor Budziszewski does a great job at describing various world views, explaining the nature of truth & morality, sexuality, naturalism, the basics of theology, and more.

This book would make a good Bible study or Sunday School lesson book for High School students as well. The chapters are short and thought provoking. The book not only challenges a person's thinking, but equips them to defend aspects of the Christian faith to relativists, naturalists, and post-moderns.

The book has online resources available for further reading.

I also recommend this book to any Christian teacher of high school or college students, and to any youth or college leaders at church. It will encourage many Christian students to stand strong on campus when their beliefs are being challenged by the professors or by friends in the dorm.

Chase the Wind
Chase the Wind
by Cindy Holby
Edition: Mass Market Paperback
42 used & new from CDN$ 0.01

5.0 out of 5 stars More Adventure Than Romance, Jan 22 2003
Cindy Holby's first novel kept me turning the pages and has me waiting for the next in the series.

I am certainly not a romance novel kind of guy, but I found this to be an exciting western saga with touches of romance. It's certainly not your typical "cowboys & indians" book. I recommend this book for anyone who likes horses or the 1800's frontier.

Three of the main, male characters - Ian, Jamie, and Chase - are the types who love to have fun, stand for what's right, and are willing to fight for those they love. They are smart, funny, strong, courageous, and faithful. Two of the female characters - Faith & Jenny - are my kind or women! They are smart, determined, caring, strong-willed, yet considerate.

Without giving away the plot twists let me say that there are plenty of surprises in this book. To some I said, "Oh, no, not that." To others I said, "All right! Way to go!" The book has plenty of laughs and touching moments. There is not a lot of foul language or sexual content; but there is some.

From the beginning I liked the forbidden courtship of Faith & Ian. As the courtship blossoms to love they know that they must escape if they are to remain together. Their daring escape & marriage seals their commitment in their hearts. Starting a new life together brings good times & bad, but they persevere which causes their love for each other to grow stronger. Then along comes the children...

Twins Jenny & Jamie are handfuls taken individually, but together they feed off of each others' excitement & humor. They care for each other like few other siblings. They pester each other at times, but will defend each other to the last breath. Fate brings their relationship closer and closer.

Chase is the truest of friends. He is like a brother to Jamie & Jenny. Chase becomes attracted to Jenny, but he is reluctant to make it known because of his sense of honor and because of his commitment to true friendship - or maybe he's just one of those guys who needs to get a clue. Chase stays with them through the good times and bad - even the very bad times.

This novel beautifully describes the awkwardness of courtship, the love of romance, the bonds of friendship, the thrills of adventure, the sorrows of tragedy, and the joys of triumph.

There's plenty of good guys & bad guys. I think it would make an awesome movie.

Love Your God with All Your Mind: The Role of Reason in the Life of the Soul
Love Your God with All Your Mind: The Role of Reason in the Life of the Soul
by J.p. Moreland
Edition: Paperback
Price: CDN$ 11.80
16 used & new from CDN$ 4.73

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm Glad He Agrees, Dec 14 2001
At first I thought maybe I was ostentatious by thinking that many of today's Christians need to get their intellect in gear as part of sharing & defending the gospel. Too often too many Christian feel that as long as we are happy & friendly then we are doing our part in the church. J.P. Moreland explains what a well-formed mind is and, more importantly, why it is so needed in the church today. He shows how a mature mind has taken a back seat in the church and how we can get it back at a personal level, congregational level, and in the church as a whole.

Moreland gives Biblical passages and reasons for having a mature Christian mind and how the Spirit works within the mind to bring us to a more mature Christian faith. I cannot imagine anyone reading this book and not being motivated to allow their faith to go beyond just an emotional level.

Moreland gives a quick lesson in some essential principals of logic. He briefly shares several experiences he has had with various skeptics and provides basic arguments to a variety of modern ideas.

This book is good to not only get your mind prepared for a deeper relationship & understanding of God, but also to equip your mind for evangelism with unbelievers and various faulty beliefs. Furthermore, Moreland provides suggestions for getting an ENTIRE CONGREGATION to a whole new way of thinking about worship, fellowship, and equipping the saints. I am so glad to know that someone else agrees with me that church should not just be a place to gather, sing, and be happy. We should also go to church to LEARN about (not just discuss) God and learn to defend the faith as we are instructed in I Peter 3:15. I would love to see more churches become actively and aggressively involved with developing a mature Christian mind. Moreland encourages all to use their sharp, Christian minds in whatever vocation they have.

At the end of the book there are several handy indices pertaining to sources for subjects from mathematics, biology, psychology, sociology, ethics, etc.

I think that if a handful of dedicated Christians & congregations in every county took Moreland's suggestions to fruition that we'd see amazing changes in this country. Yes, it's a challenge, but it's worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars For The Serious Student., Dec 14 2001
I read this book under the recommendation of two noted apologists. This book neither toys around with apologetics nor gives brief, watered-down arguments; rather, it gets to the meat of the subject and goes in depth. This book is well suited for college/graduate apologetics courses and for any Christian who is willing to take a serious, in-depth look at Christian apologetics. The book is academic in nature and not a typical self-help, devotional read... although while reading this book I do feel my relationship with Christ grew out of my deeper understanding of many things.

Craig explores and explains well the relationship of faith & reason, the existence of God, the absurdity of life without God, miracles, arguments concerning problems of historical knowledge, reliability & historicity of the New Testament scriptures, and the claims & resurrection of Christ. Each chapter gives views contrary to orthodox Christianity and then Craig analyzes each in turn. I especially appreciated his treatment of miracles and the problem of historicity.

At the end of each chapter is a summary and a personal application section. The personal application questions helped me to keep in mind the real reason why I was reading this book. This book could be used in a small group Bible study, but I would not recommend it to those who are not willing to put forth some effort.

The last chapter is brief, but very important. Here Craig reminds us that the best arguments in the world really come second to how we live our lives as Christians and how we interact with the people around us. This, he says, is the "ultimate apologetic."

This is a wonderfully written book.

Baker Encyclopedia of Christian Apologetics
Baker Encyclopedia of Christian Apologetics
by Norman L. Geisler
Edition: Hardcover
13 used & new from CDN$ 48.16

5.0 out of 5 stars The Whole Kit & Caboodle, Dec 14 2001
This book covers every subject dealing with apologetics that I could ever imagine: history of, Biblical documents, brief biographies & summaries of Christian apologists and atheist critics, works of philosophers (Hume, Kant, etc), science & the Bible, alleged biblical errors, cults, other religions, historicity of the the Bible, relationship of faith & reason, etc.

The articles are presented in alphabetical order with plenty of cross references to catch related articles. There is an article index at the back of the book. There is also an index of biblical & apocraphyl scriptures used and on what page these verses are mentioned.

Articles range from a few paragraphs to several pages. However, depending on the topic of interest, with related articles a person would have a chapter's worth of material. Each article ends with a list of sources for that article. The bibliography for this book is very large. Dr. Geisler has gathered and summarized a vast amount of material.

Although this book is mainly a reference book, it is organized & written in a fashion that one could easily get as much from this as if reading a standard book on apologetics... actually more so.

I highly recommend this book to pastors, youth leaders, seminary students, and Christians who want to learn about & defend the Christian faith.

Complex Analysis
Complex Analysis
by Serge Lang
Edition: Hardcover
Price: CDN$ 57.56
20 used & new from CDN$ 53.76

4.0 out of 5 stars Not TOO complex, July 21 2000
This review is from: Complex Analysis (Hardcover)
A person with absolutely no knowledge of complex numbers could begin with page one of this book. However, I think that some exposure to analysis is helpful before finishing the first chapter, but not necessary. I found this book easier to read & understand than some real analysis books, yet it helped me further understand real analysis in the process. I'm sure this is due to mere repetition of some of those concepts over a different field. As the author mentions in his foreword, the first half of the book can be used as an undergraduate text (Jr/Sn years) and the second half can also, but I would NOT have enjoyed it in undergraduate studies. I found it worthy of a first course in complex numbers at the graduate level. I especially liked it after studying real numbers. The placement of the chapter subject matter can be altered (to some degree) to ones liking. I think Lang has provided good examples & problems. There's a solutions manual (by Rami Shakarchi) for this text somewhere.

A brief discription of the chapters (some of them at least):

Chp 1: basic definitions & operations, polar form, functions, limits, compact sets, differentiation, Cauchy-Riemann eqs, angles under holomorphic ("differentiable") maps.

Chp 2: formal & convergent power series, analytic functions, inverse & open mapping thms., local maximum modulus principle

Chp 3: connected sets, integrals over paths, primitives ("antiderivatives"), local Cauchy thm, etc

Chp 4: winding numbers, global Cauchy Thm, Artin's proof

Chp 5: Applications of Cauchy's integral formula, Laurent series

Chp 6: Calculus of residues, evaluation of complex definate integrals, Fourier transforms, etc (fun stuff)

Chp 7: Comformal mapping, Schwarz lemma, analytic automorphisms of the Disc

Chp 8: Harmonic functions; Chp 9: Schwarz reflection; Chp 10: Riemann mapping theorem; (11): Analytic continuation along curves; (12) applications of Maximum Modulus Principle an Jensen's Formula; (13) Entire & Meromorphic functions; (14) elliptic functions; (15) Gamma & Zeta functions; (16) The Prime Number Theorem; and a handy appendix.

A Grief Observed
by C.S. Lewis
Edition: Mass Market Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Deep Soul Searching, July 20 2000
If you've ever cried out, "Why, God?", this book will help you see that God did not leave you to suffer for His enjoyment. As C.S. Lewis writes the entries in this journal you can see the mixture of emotions and thoughts; like riding an ocean tossed by intermittent storms. Lewis bares his soul and helps us look at our own. Having read his earlier book, "The Problem of Pain", before reading this one gave me an even deeper look into his thoughts. I recommend them both. I also recommend the movie "Shadowlands" with the reading of this book. Lewis is brilliant, but he is also very human and very candid.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprised Indeed, July 20 2000
Wanting to know more about C.S. Lewis I thought this would be a good book to read. It did tell me much about the man, but several times while reading it, I thought about in what ways would these things he is telling relate to his conversion from atheism to Christianity. However, in classic Lewis style, the ending makes all that came before it worth every minute of my time. To the casual C.S. Lewis reader this book may seem long. I wouldn't recommend it as the first book to read by Lewis, but to someone who is truly fascinated by him and wants to know more about this man, I would highly recommend it.
