5.0 out of 5 stars Superb translation!, Jan. 5 2003
This review is from: Beowulf (Paperback)
After reading about the immense influence of Beowulf on Tolkien in "Celebrating Middle-Earth", I reread it in this translation. It is powerful and moves along rapidly. It captures the strong yet poetic use of words and brings out changes of mood brilliantly.

5.0 out of 5 stars A magnificent book!, July 14 2002
I have read almost all of Peter Kreeft's books and this one is the most hard-hitting and direct. He "tells it like it is" in no uncertain terms - common sense prevails! How refreshing! The last chapters are beautiful - anyone who can read them and not rush to rededicate themselves to a life of holiness and who can't feel the surge of hope for winning the battle must have sadly succumbed to the worst of modern culture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very timely and well-written, June 30 2002
Cecilia Martin has succinctly presented the background of the present problems in the Catholic Church and who is responsible. All of us need this book to tell us how to defend our church from its enemies within and how to find and use the resources of the Church to be intelligent, well-informed Catholics and apologists. Thanks!

3.0 out of 5 stars Some good, some not., Feb. 23 2002
I found the DVD interesting when covering the background of Tolkien's life and esp. his interest in mythology and the Finnish language. I thought it odd that his deeply held Christian belief and its effect on his writings never came into it, but that National Geographic made a nonsensical analogy of LOTR's monumental struggle of good vs. evil to today's environmental movement.

1.0 out of 5 stars Full of bitterness, Dec 31 2001
This review is from: Why Am I Not Muslim (Hardcover)
The book is useful in some of its documentation of facts regarding Muhammed, the Koran and the development of Islam. However, the author has an enormous axe to grind - not only against the faith he once held, but against all forms of belief. He constantly refers to the lack of rational and critical thought of Moslems, Christians and Jews, but he himself is not open to any informed opinions on them, quoting those scholars with a like bias. There is such a tone of bitterness, even hatred, against the presence of the Divine that it mars the reading of the book. For those of us who aren't knowledgable about Islam, it leaves us with the question of whether we are reading a fair commentary on it.
