5.0 out of 5 stars The best book for children coping with divorce., Jan 11 2002
Now in my late twenties, I read this book when I was entering fourth grade and I liked very much reading it. Although my parents are still together, there are children, even as adults, dealing with divorce. Karen Newman, the main character of the book, is coping with the unexpected events that are going on during her parents separation. She meets another girl that lives in the same building as her father whose parents are divorced. However, her reaction to her parents' breakup is much different from Karen's. She already knew from an early age that her father's role in her life was a small part. She accepts her mother being a single parent and going back out into the dating scene. Karen eventually gets through and comes to the conclusion that her parents aren't getting back. This is an interesting read not only for children, but for adults as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellently written story on how divorce affects family., Dec 27 2001
This review is from: Marrying the Mistress (Paperback)
This book give a complexity of how family and community are affected by Guy's announcement to leave his wife of forty years for a much younger woman. Laura Stockdale, the wife, has become her husband's shadow leaning on her married son Simon at his family's disapproval. Her neighbor Wendy encourages her to get on with her life but she refuses and is determined to make Guy pay for what he has done. Simon, the older son, lets his parents' breakup become an obsession which nearly destroys his family. Alan, Simon's other son, takes the breakup well.
Merrion Palmer, Guy's mistress of seven years, never had a real sense of what makes up a family. Despite her strong characteristcs, she yearns for a male dominant figure. Merrion grew up with her mother and grandmother. She was too young when her father died and her stepfather hardly exists.
This is the first novel I read of Ms. Trollope's and I have to say I was very impressed with her style of writing. The relationship between Guy and Merrion isn't sexually candid, but it does detail why married spouses do have affairs.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nothing to rave about, Dec 15 2001
I remember reading this book and I have to say that I didn't like it at all. It was more like watching a soap opera that you can't stand. I thought it would be a great read because there are very few books that have interractial themes between black women and white men. And this book didn't do anything to exite me. If you want to read a good interracial book, try Sandra Kitt's "Color of Love" and Pamela Leigh Starr's "Fate".

The Scarletti Curse

3.0 out of 5 stars This book was so-so., July 9 2001
At first it was interesting because the character Nicoletta was a free spirit who vowed never to be married to anyone who would subject her to abuse or become servile to. It was when she met Don Giovanni Scarletti, she sensed something evil about him and his family. Don Scarletti had possession of her mind, body, and soul. His dark features were erotic, yet frightening to Nicoletta. However, I have found myself getting a little bored with the book. It seems as if something that is bound to happen, doesn't happen. It's a good read, but unfortunately I am getting restless and impatient with the Scarletti curse and the passionate fires between Nicoletta and Don Giovanni.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the best reggae CD I've ever heard., Jun 27 2001
This review is from: Rockin' Steady: Best of (Audio CD)
I had to control myself at work because the minute I put this CD into my personal CD player, the beat was booming and Desmond's voice is melodical and beautiful. It is an excellent collection of songs to listen and dance to. This was worth the investment in my collection of old school reggae.

5.0 out of 5 stars So beautiful and relaxing., Jun 25 2001
This is the most beautiful and relaxing CD I have listened to. The whimsical sounds of the harp and violin flow through the ear canal easing tension and relaxing muscles in the body. Your thoughts are adrift as the melodies chime. I highly recommend this CD for anyone who wants to have a peaceful moment to themselves while reading or sitting down on the sofa. It's an investement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Becca needs a lesson in consumerism and money management., Jun 19 2001
Rebecca Bloomwood spent beyond her means and let it spin out of control because she failed to respond to her creditors and never asked herself if she really needed these things. The purpose of a budget is to control spending, not deprive yourself of pampering. That is what she made it out to be. Eventually, the character triumphed with a job that she really loved and was able to keep in contact with her creditors. This should be a valuable lesson for women who spend money they don't have and expect to be rescued from their situation. This book was a great read and amusing. But as consumers, we do have to be wise.

I am listening to this CD without skipping any songs. I find her songs comforting and relaxing. It's good to sit down and just listen to her melodic voice. This CD was worth the money. The last song however, makes me want to dance. Great music for a newcomer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get your party groove on!, April 11 2001
This review is from: V7 Old School (Audio CD)
These songs take me back to the days when R'n'B was good to dance to. It reminded of living in an apartment building with music pumping through the speakers and people grooving to the beat. I was exercising and dancing to these songs! The main reason for buying the CD was Kano's "I'm Ready" (which I played several times when I received it in the mail today). But there were other hits that I remembered and worked out to as well. Those were my good old days!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Reggae Hits of All Time!, April 8 2001
This compilation of the great producer Coxon Dodd is another collection of reggae greats that are going to be obscure if we don't cherish the rhythms that don't promote violence and sexism. Every song on this CD is great to listen to. It's worth the investment.
