5.0 out of 5 stars JAZZ DIVA TOUR-DE-FORCE!! BRAVO GLORIA!!, April 11 2004
This review is from: No Detour Ahead (Audio CD)
Talk about an underrated and overlooked singer!! Look no further and grab this incredible masterpiece fast while it is still available as it does not get better than this or rarely as great!! From the opening haunting Lionel Richie "Hello", you know this is singing at it finest!! A brilliant production by Nat Adderley Jr. is inspired and Mr. Adderley more than lives up to his legendary name here!! An exotic trip on "No Detour Ahead" is sublime and an exhuberant latin rhythm makes "Old Devil Moon" fresh and original. Torchy and soulfully sung is a masterful take on Billie Holiday's classic "Don't Explain" and "Everything Must Change" is simply haunting and mesmorizing!! Stunning and glorious piano and tenor saxophone brilliantly frame a stunningly loose and soulful vocal on the extraordinary "Free" which is one of the many in this classic set that you won't want to end!! Haunting and gorgeous is the old standard "My Foolish Heart" and never before has it sounded quite this incredible. Please come to the West Coast Miss Lynne and grace us with your incredible talent!! What a thrill it must be to see this wonder in a club-WOW!!!!! As incredible as this complete collection is the finale is a whooper!!! Never have I heard a Stevie Wonder cover this brilliant and Stevie must be in 7th heaven whenever he hears this masterful version!!! Miss Gloria Lynne takes "Too Shy To Say" all over the place and turns it inside out and into a masterpiece!! I don't know the background of this classic work as far a Grammy goes as this came out over ten years ago now, but it should have had I hope at least a win in the Jazz Catagory!! This is one of the best ever and do not miss this Classic!!! Bravo Gloria Lynne-you a remarkable singer!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars DIETRICH'S HISTORIC CONCERT TOUR-DE-FORCE, April 11 2004
I remember the thrill in 1968 of being in the 1st row center balcony at Los Angeles Ahmanson Theatre for Marlene Dietrich in Concert!! I remember an elegant DIVA decked out in sequins and fur looking completely extraordinary and performing with spectacular drama and pathos and receiving numerous standing ovations and a particularly long one for a riveting "Where Have All The Flowers Gone". Tons of flowers were thrown on the stage along with other gifts of affection from an adoring audience!! Forward to 1972 and this television special and at the time I noticed a huge change from the event four years prior. Timing wasn't as sharp and the power was down a few notches but the beauty of Marlene's performance extraordinary none the less!! With the passage of time this performance is even more precious and timeless in its beauty!! Do not miss this extraordinary event as this type of greatness will never happen again!! I feel blessed that I was old enough to experience this great lady "live in concert" and happy to have this DVD as a souvenir of this legendary event! Bravo Lili Marlene!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars ULTIMATE STREISAND CONCERT TOUR-DE-FORCE!!!, April 11 2004
Barbra Streisand hit the concert stage in 1980 in Los Angeles at the Dorothy Chandler in a Marilyn & Alan Bergman Tribute Concert and was totally electfifying and brilliant beyond description! The finale was Barbra doing what at first appeared to be a solo version of "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" only to be joined from rear orchestra by an unannounced Neil Diamond for a stunning and showstopping duet!!! This night was a spoiler so nothing has come close to this great event until "Live At The MGM Grand"!! What an extraordinary event with Barbra giving the most raw and passionate performance ever to be captured on film in her amazing career. Opening strong with a show-stopping "As If We Never Said Goodbye" then gliding into a brilliant medley which ends with an exhuberant "Don't Rain On My Parade", it is clear that Barbra is a her absolute peak with nothing held back!!!! Charming and winning in her Marlon Brando duet then deeply passionate in the definitive version of "People", Barbra then thrills with a burning "Lover Man (Oh, Where Can You Be?)". Cole Porter's classic "What Is This Thing Called Love?" is spellbinding and "On A Clear Day" is pure magical bliss that hits wonderful heights!! Comic moments are great throughtout and the special Linda Richman skit is great fun!! The beauty of a Mother's love is incredibly moving in "Not While I'm Around" sung to a handsome Jason and "Ordinary Miracles" is just plain riveting with Barbra at her vocal and emotional peak!! Moments shared with Barbra's Mother and President Clinton's Mother are special and the dedication to their memory at the finale is another of the many moving moments in this extraordinary and historic event!! This is a concert that reminds one how incredibly gifted this legend is and how her talent is incomparable when she is moved and inspired to do her best!! Barbra was moved and inspired on this great evening and did she ever deliver!!! Don't miss this spectacular performance!!! Bravo Barbra!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars MINNELLI'S MAGICAL MUSICAL TOUR!! GO LIZA!!!!, April 7 2004
From the charged great opener "Yes" it is clear that this is going to be an extraordinary musical trip with a great, great singer!! Drama and pathos make "God Bless The Child" a moving and incredible experience and "Liza With A "Z" is great fun and a tongue-twisting feat that Liza never once flubs on!! Exhuberant and soulful is the definitive version of "It Was A Good Time" and wildly soulful is the rhythmic "I Gotcha" which is also a great dance routine that Liza really shines in. This classic concert was a Emmy Winning Television Special which deserves release on DVD and hopefully this will happen soon!!! An all-stops-out performance makes "Ring Them Bells" a stunning masterpiece and Liza is the only singer besides the late Dusty Springfield that does justice to the funky "Son Of A Preacher Man". Stylish and sophiscated makes "Bye Bye Blackbird" a stunner and well broken in and familiar love is celebrated in the fascinating "You've Let Yourself Go". The ultimate passionate tribute is given to Mom in a masterful version of "My Mammy" which has to be the all-time best of this classic!! Liza's voice is stunning on "Mammy" and would make her Mom very proud!!! A well-earned Oscar went to Liza for her fascinating portrayal of Sally Bowles in "Cabaret" and the songs that make up the closing medley from that motion picture are thrilling to hear Liza sing "Live" in concert!! More than 30 years after this legendary event Liza is still thrilling audiences with her magical talent. Bravo Liza!!

5.0 out of 5 stars TIMI YURO = THE VOICE OF A LIFETIME!! BRAVO TIMI, April 5 2004
This review is from: Voice That Got Away V.2 (Audio CD)
As the title implies, Timi Yuro's magnificant voice is comparable in its passion and greatness to the legendary Judy Garland. I would have loved to hear "The Voice That Got Away" do her magic on "The Man That Got Away" as it would have been as awesome as anything that Miss Yuro sung always was. Sadly Timi Yuro passed away at 62 years of age but she left behind soulful brilliance for us to enjoy such as this wonderful collection which has a generous amount of her brilliant classic "Something Bad On My Mind" which hopefully will see release soon on compact disc. Haunting and mesmerizing is the opening classic "Interlude" and one can immediately hear that this is going to be a total experience unlike any other. Timi's towering vocal on "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" makes this song a great classic and on Carole King's "Hey Boy" Timi goes deeper into this classic than ever before and the result is breathtaking. Soulful and glorious are the vocals throughout this incredible collection and "I Must Have Been Out Of My Mind" and "When He Wants A Woman" should have been #1 country hits as they are up there with the best of Patsy Cline without a doubt!! Where were the radio programmers of America when this classic "Something Bad On My Mind" came out in 1968? From this collection it is easy to see that "Something Bad On My Mind" contained WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN numerous chart toppers in the Pop, R&B, and Country areas plus the Adult Contemporary! This was a crime against an artist who is Legend and I believe she didn't try as hard after this happened. What is this country doing to real talent? Some soul searching is needed as this lady could really sing unlike anyone else!! Timi also composed the incredible "Wrong" here and this shows what could have continued if the industry would have cared and given support to a once in a lifetime classic. Get this great collection and see for yourself. God Bless You Timi...

5.0 out of 5 stars INCOMPARABLE VOCAL GREATNESS!!, April 5 2004
This review is from: Best Of (Audio CD)
For those interested in a once in a lifetime brilliant singer, do not miss this awesome collection. Sadly Timi Yuro has passed but she has left behind this brilliant collection of masterpieces for those who care to enjoy! Back in Junior High I remember hearing "Hurt" and was completely mesmerized by this classic great voice and powerful way of emoting!! Elvis was said to be enthralled by the majestic voice of Miss Yuro and would play "Hurt" endlessly and recorded a fine version himself. Willie Nelson became a lifetime fan when Timi recorded the definitive version of his "Make The World Go Away" and made a complete classic out of it!! Timi was great in any setting and the Wall Of Sound came alive with "What's The Matter Baby" which has an incredibly powerful vocal from Timi. Throughout this great collection is one glorious vocal after another. As the sixties closed Timi went to England and recorded a real masterpiece of an album "Something Bad On My Mind" and the title cut is on this collection for all to savor and enjoy. Bless you Timi and may you Rest In Peace. Thank you for sharing such brilliance with us. Love You...

5.0 out of 5 stars HAUNTING PEGGY LEE MASTERPIECE!!!, March 26 2004
This review is from: Mirrors (Audio CD)
Peggy Lee reached new artistic heights with the haunting "Is That All There Is?" and continued through the first half of the seventies with the most extraordinary and inventive work of her brilliant career!! Yet this is the hardest work of Peggy's to obtain on CD and a box set of this untapped treasure chest of work is the answer!! Incredibly great was her final Capitol album "Norma Delores" as every song is Miss Lee at her peak with a full studio orchestra!! Come on guys let's get with it!! Capitol has great tracks in the vault from this period such as classics like "One More Ride (On The Merry-Go-Round)", "Where Did They Go? (All The Good Times)", and many unreleased tracks from these great sessions!! Enough of the already well-covered 50's & 60's, lets do the 70's!! Peggy Lee did another great 70's album which was released on Atlantic Records called "Let's Love" which has the ethereal title song produced by Paul Mc Cartney in another eclectic contemporary set which finds Peggy again in peak form throughout with no throw away tracks! This all leads to this classic that sadly was the last album that Miss Lee did on a major label with full production that was worthy of her great talent. Peggy Lee makes the most of it and turned out the most adventuresome album of her career and one of the most brilliant albums ever made by any singer!! Legendary composers Leiber & Stoller wrote and produced an extraordinary collection of songs that allowed Miss Lee to reveal all the facets of her remarkable talent. An added bonus is the Grammy Winning "Is That All Their Is?" which fits in nicely in this collection of many other remarkable classics. "Ready To Begin Again" is a celebration of making the necessary adjustments in life as one grows older and "Some Cats Know" has fascinating tempo changes with a vocal from Peggy that is jazzy and flows like honey with a great bass line by the late and great Ray Brown. A great ragtime arrangement make "I've Got Them Feelin' Too Good Today Blues" a fun romp and a trip on a luxury liner make "A Little White Ship" an elegant journey. A kaleidoscope of musical images fill the brilliant and hypnotic "Tango" which is completely dazzling and unlike anything I have ever heard!! Peggy weaves a spell magically through this masterpiece that leave one breathless and Peggy clearly went far beyond her contempories in the way she stretched and expanded her great talent. The sad state of the arts is revealed in a fascinating way in the epic "Professor Hauptmann's Performing Dog's" in a way never before done!! Basically this extraordinary song explores the lack of appreciation of real talent by the populace and sadly this relates to the music industy in our good ole U.S.A. and Peggy certainally was feeling this way at the time this album was made as her 70's work is among her best but was generally overlooked and not as commerical as it should have been. "The Case Of M.J." is a disturbing tale of mental illness which is done in a very haunting way and "I Remember" is lush and melancholy with a gorgeous vocal that is nothing less than magical. World-weary romance is enchanting the way Peggy does "Say It" and this sophisicated stunner shows she had to have been there to convey this emotion so convincingly or else she is a superb actress!!! You will wonder throughout this incredible set is she the singer or the song because Peggy gets totally inside of each great number and takes you there completely! Magically enchanting is the glorious "Longings For A Simpler Time" which in better musical times than the seventies this would have been a huge hit as it is extraordinary and incredible in its musical scope. They don't make them like this anymore so get this classic while it is available as this is an extraordinary musical journey and experience!! This is definitely one of my all-time favorite albums!! Bravo to everyone connected with producing this ultimate masterpiece!! And God Bless Peggy Lee!! A beautiful lady and a great artist who gave us years of brilliance that were truly unforgetable...

5.0 out of 5 stars Legendary Soul Icon!! Don't Miss This One!!!!!!!!!!!!!, March 22 2004
This review is from: Best Of (Audio CD)
If Jerry Butler only had one hit and it was "For Your Precious Love", he would be a Soul Legend!! But this master had classic's like "Moon River", "He Will Break Your Heart", "Let It Be Me" (a truly brilliant duet with the late and great Betty Everett),and countless other classic hits such as the ones in this tasty sampler! Talk about overlooked classic's, I would most definitely put Jerry Butler at the head of that list and when anyone who love's great singing gets into this collection they will feel the same way!! Grammy and Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame let's get it together!!!!! This is a master and this collection of classic's such as "Only The Strong Survive", "Moody Woman", "I Dig You Baby", the mesmerizing "Mr. Dream Merchant", the soulful "Lost", and the masterful "Hey, Western Union Man", all make Jerry Butler one of the greatest ever!! 5.0 out of 5 stars TWO LEGENDS = AWESOME COLLECTION!!!, March 22 2004
This review is from: Thelma & Jerry (Audio CD)
Thelma Houston and Jerry Butler are brilliant together in every way and this is one of the greatest duet albums ever made and over the years has become my personal all time favorite! From the cooker of an opener "Only The Beginning" to the sensuous and soulful "And You've Got Me", you can tell right off that these soulful legends are clearly in peak form!! Jerry's smoldering voice mixed with Thelma's pure yet urgent vocals form a satisfying and unforgettable experience. "It's A Lifetime Thing" is beautifully romantic and passion explodes when Chicago's "If You Leaves Me Now" becomes a great medley with Brother Gibb's "Love So Right". This brilliant duet is one that you will listen to over and over as Thelma and Jerry are both superb and turn this into a classic tour-de-force. The rhymthic "I Love You Through Windows" is exuberant and fun and Stevie Wonders "Joy Inside My Tears" is a smoldering soul classic that is turned inside out with vocals that are stunning. A celebration of new romance in "Sweet Love I've Found" is exciting and love gone bad is haunting and heartbreaking in "(Play The Game Of)Let's Pretend". A riveting celebration ends this great set and "Let's Get Together" should have been a huge hit as this duet is infectious and one of the many that you will play over and over!! Motown should release all of the Thelma & Jerry duets as they are timeless classic's that will never be duplicated. Bravo to these two incredible talents who have always turned out great works individually and came together and created a lasting classic!!! Thank you Thelma Houston and Jerry Butler!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars STUNNING MASTERPIECE!!! BRAVO THELMA!!!!!, March 21 2004
This review is from: Sunshower (Audio CD)
"Sunshower" is the most incredible album that legendary composer Jimmy Webb has ever written, arranged, and produced in his long and brilliant career! As Jimmy stated on the original album sleeve "I hurry to present Thelma... the most prodigious talent I have ever encountered" and Miss Houston more than lives up to this proclamation. Never have I heard a more brilliant marriage of artist and material and this work for many collector's has been an example of singing at it's finest since it's original release. Upon original release radio didn't know what to do with this classic but word of mouth spread like wildfire that Thelma Houston's voice was one of the all-time greats and not to be missed! Immediately I ran out and purchased what quickly became one of my all-time favorite female vocal albums ...I purchased numerous copies so that I would never be without a fresh copy. ... Stirring and soulful is "Everybody Gets to Go to the Moon" and hauntingly beautiful is "To Make It Easier on You" with a vocal that is magnificent. Many have done "Didn't We" but this is the definitive version with an ever so fine vocal that is unforgettable. "Mixed-Up Girl" is sung with such heartbreaking passionate longing that it is totally stunning. By the time you get to the gorgeous "Someone is Standing Outside" you know that this is a solid collection with no throw aways! Thelma really lets it rip on "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and this version is a notch up from the original and really cooks and is a gas!!. Another glorious heartbreaking vocal goes deep inside "This is Where I Came In" and deep anguish through the haunting "Poketful of Keys". "This is Your Life" is an epic ballad with a beautiful passionate vocal that pleads to a wayward lover and is breathtaking in its beauty. Another cooker in this magical collection is the hard rocking "Cheap Lovin'" and the closer is the spiritual "If This Was the Last Song" which ends on a passionate high that soulfully breaks into "Somebody is Standing Outside". Get this fast while its available because they don't get finer than this!! ...
